KUNA photo The Kuwaiti aid convoy headed Wednesday from Cairo to the Rafah crossing in preparation for entering the Gaza Strip to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people. In a statement to KUNA, Head of the Kuwaiti delegation, Di- rector of Disaster and Emergency Department at Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS), Yousef Al-Maraj, said that the Kuwaiti Red Crescent is ‘the first volunteer team to enter the Gaza Strip’. Al-Maraj added that KRCS responded urgently to provide support, food, and medical supplies to Gaza Strip, in addition to providing materials to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. He noted that medical aid will be delivered to the Palestine Red Crescent Society for distribution to hospitals suffering from a lack of medical supplies. He said that the Kuwaiti convoy was carrying 85 tons of aid, including nearly 1,000 food baskets that were bought from the Egyptian local market.

Those efforts have fallen short of the demands of Exxon’s dissident investor groups. Other major oil companies, from British Petroleum and Shell to Conoco Phillips and Chevron, have done more to satisfy shareholders. Investors want more corporate disclosures of climate-damaging emissions, and they expect energy companies to diversify their portfolios to include more renewable sources, said Anne Simpson, managing invest- ment director for board governance and sustainability at the California Public Employees’ Retirement System - known as CalPERS - America’s largest pension fund. “What we’re finding with other oil companies,” Simpson said, “is we’re making progress, and Exxon needs to catch up. Exxon is still saying one thing and doing another.” CalPERS, a heavyweight in the investing community, voted for Engine No. 1s slate of candidates. The pension fund asserts that through its engagement and proxy voting, it has compelled hundreds of companies to add new direc- tors to their boards. “Usually what happens is, we have a collaborative approach where we work with companies,” Simpson said. “I would say it’s in rare circumstances that investors feel the need to actually put their own candidates forward. But that is because the nominating committee hasn’t been able to fulfill investors’ expectations. Exxon has had several years attempting to address this issue.” Support for shareholder proposals that focus on climate change is rapidly growing. In 2015, Glass Lewis, a firm that advises institutional investors, reviewed 14 shareholder proposals that requested additional disclosures on climate- related issues, such as the companies’ levels of greenhouse gas emissions. By 2017, there were 21 such shareholder proposals that went to a vote; three of them received over 50% approval. Before then, none had received majority support, according to Glass Lewis. This year, 25 climate-related shareholder proposals have made it onto ballots, and those that have been voted on so far have received support from 59% of shareholders on aver- age, according to the Institute for Shareholder Services. The International Energy Agency this month warned that immediate action was needed to reshape the world’s energy sector, and it recommended ending investments in new oil and gas wells and coal mines. “Even if you love fossil fuels, you have to acknowledge that they’re not making any more of them, and any company that wants to be sustainable over the long term has got to figure out what their next step is going to be,” said Nell Minow, vice chair of ValueEdge Advisors, an influential figure in corporate gov- ernance who voted in support of Engine No. 1. “There’s a massive demographic shift. I think the millennial generation and the generation that follow are much, much more sensitive on these issues as employees, as consumers and as investors, than the generations that have gone before.”

Continued from Page 8 There are varying estimates of the size of the on- line lending market for businesses, but it’s well into the dozens of billions of dollars and is expected to grow by double-digit percentages in the next few years. Investors and the financial services industry rec- ognize the potential value of online lenders; PayPal, which went public in 2015, has nearly doubled in price since before the PPP began, compared to a 20% gain in the S&P 500 index over the same time frame. Last year, American Express bought Kabbage, which offers banking services in addition to loans. The PPP raised the profile of online lenders like Pay- Pal and Square, says Karen Mills, who headed the SBA during the Obama administration and now is a research fellow at Harvard University. These companies based their lending on information in their own databases, payment histories being one example. “They were dteeply committed to the success and future of the small business segment, so they leaned in,” Mills says. When some small business clients of Kruze Consult- ing ran into roadblocks at their banks, the accounting firm recommended they try online lenders. All those clients got their loans and had good service. “They would use those online services again,” says Healy Jones, a vice president at the firm that has offices in California, New York and Texas. The PPP was a teachable moment for the accoun- tants as they saw widely varying performances from all the lenders. “We are really seeing it as a weighing mechanism to see which banks had the customer service and organi- zational chops to help clients during the crisis,” Jones says. For Grimes, online banks are in the best position to give him that kind of help because they once were startups. “They were a small business. They understand me. They are me,” he says.

EU to donate 100mn doses Online ‘stars’ wooed to smear Pfi zer shot LE PECQ, France, May 26, (AP): Social media infl uencers in France with hundreds of thousands of followers say a mysteri- ous advertising agency offered to pay them if they agreed to smear Pfi zer’s COVID-19 vaccine with negative fake stories. French YouTuber Léo Grasset was among those contacted. He said Tuesday that he was offered a potentially lucrative but also hush-hush deal to make bogus claims that Pfi zer’s vaccine poses a deadly risk and that regulators and mainstream media are covering up the supposed dangers. Grasset, who has 1.1 million subscribers on YouTube, says he refused. Other France-based infl uencers with sizable audi- ences on Twitter, Instagram and other platforms also said they were contacted with similar offers of payment for posts. The person who contacted Grasset identifi ed himself as Anton and said his agency has a “quite considerable” budget for what he described as an “informa- tion campaign” about “COVID-19 and the vaccines offered to the European population, notably AstraZeneca and Pfi zer.” Specifi cally, Anton asked for a 45- to 60-second video on Instagram, TikTok or YouTube to say that “the mortal- ity rate of the Pfi zer vaccine is 3 times greater than the AstraZeneca” and que- rying why the European Union is buy- ing it. Grasset “This is a monopoly and is causing harm to public health,” Anton claimed of EU’s purchases. He refused in a follow-up email to divulge who is fi nanc- ing the disinformation campaign, saying: “The client prefers to remain incognito.” Grasset shared the email exchanges with The Associated Press. Companies House, where British fi rms are Coronavirus registered, has no record of Fazze. Much like the slouchy blazers he wore in movies like “Pretty in Pink” and “St. Elmo’s Fire,” that Brat Pack moni- ker and image never really fi t. But time has put a soft fi lter on that era for the actor and he’s ready to refl ect on his early days as a movie star in his new memoir, “Brat: An 80’s Story,” which debuted ear- lier this month. Now a TV director, acclaimed travel writer, and best-selling author, McCarthy has been busy in re- cent years, if under the radar. He decided it was the right time to look back on his early life in acting and share stories about his adven- tures in Hollywood, compli- cated family relationships, addiction and recovery. The book helps explain the evolution of the Brat Pack — a group of young actors in- cluding Molly Ringwald and Judd Nelson who dominated movies in the 1980’s and set cultural trends — and how McCarthy and others swept McCarthy into its vortex became the nostalgic “avatar of people’s youth.” In a recent interview with The Associated Press, he discussed reconciling his Brat Pack membership, his kids choosing to act, and which of his movies should be remade. Responses have been condensed for brevity and clarity. AP: Why write the book now? McCarthy: I think I probably grew up enough to look at it.
