Are there clear-cut boundaries between language varieties in these contexts? Can we posit that speakers, in certain circumstances, may possess more than one internal grammar of their language that is associated with different social contexts? If so, how do speakers develop knowledge of this type of grammar? More importantly, how can we systematically account for the massive scale of variation that is part of any diglossic speech grammar? This dissertation demonstrates how the structural phenomena of diglossia can be derived from domain-general cognitive processes, including memory, attention to frequencies and similarities, categorization, establishing connections between similar categories, making generalizations from observed patterns, etc. These processes operate in multiple instances of language use and create the grammar of diglossic speech. This dissertation uses the diglossic grammar of Faifi, an Arabic diglossic speech community located in the Faifa mountains in southwestern Saudi Arabia, to demonstrate the emergent grammar properties. The same principles should apply to the other diglossic speech communities of Arabic. The analyses are grounded in the core of a relatively new framework called Emergent Grammar (EG), which drifts away from using the concept of Universal Grammar and genetic endowment specific to language as central in driving research questions and the way of interpreting data (Archangeli & Pulleyblank, 2012a,b,c; 2013; 2014a,b; 2015a,b,c; 2016; 2017; 2018 among others).

Kiraz Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton and Beth Mardutho: The Syriac Institute, Piscataway [email protected] Abstract It is argued here that functionalism lies at the heart of garshunographic writing systems (where one language is written in a script that is sociolinguistically associated with another language). Giving historical accounts of such systems that began as early as the eighth century, it will be demonstrated that garshunographic systems grew organ- ically because of necessity and that they offered a certain degree of simplicity rather than complexity.While the paper discusses mostly Syriac-based systems, its arguments can probably be expanded to other garshunographic systems. Keywords Garshuni – garshunography – allography – writing systems It has long been suggested that cultural identity may have been the cause for the emergence of Garshuni systems. (In the strictest sense of the term, ‘Garshuni’ refers to Arabic texts written in the Syriac script but the term’s semantics were drastically extended to other systems, sometimes ones that have little to do with Syriac—for which see below.) This paper argues for an alterna- tive origin, one that is rooted in functional theory. At its most fundamental level, Garshuni—as a system—is nothing but a tool and as such it ought to be understood with respect to the function it performs. LIPSKI 30.1 Basic Facts 30.1.1 Historical Development Spanish and Portuguese are closely related Ibero‐Romance languages whose origins can be traced to the expansion of the Latin‐speaking Roman Empire to the Iberian Peninsula; the divergence of Spanish and Portuguese began around the ninth century. Starting around 1500, both languages entered a period of global colonial expansion, giving rise to new vari- eties in the Americas and elsewhere. Sources for the development of Spanish and Portuguese include Lloyd (1987), Penny (2000, 2002), and Pharies (2007). Specific to Portuguese are fea- tures such as the retention of the seven‐vowel system of Vulgar Latin, elision of intervocalic /l/ and /n/ and the creation of nasal vowels and diphthongs, the creation of a “personal” infinitive (inflected for person and number), and retention of future subjunctive and pluper- fect indicative tenses. Spanish, essentially evolved from early Castilian and other western Ibero‐Romance dialects, is characterized by loss of Latin word‐initial /f‐/, the diphthongiza- tion of Latin tonic /ɛ/ and /ɔ/, palatalization of initial C + L clusters to /ʎ/, a complex series of changes to the sibilant consonants including devoicing and the shift of /ʃ/ to /x/, and many innovations in the pronominal system. 30.1.2 The Spanish Language Worldwide Reference grammars of Spanish include Bosque (1999a), Butt and Benjamin (2011), and Real Academia Española (2009–2011).     languages Article Contrastive Feature Typologies of Arabic Consonant Reflexes Islam Youssef Department of Languages and Literature Studies, University of South-Eastern Norway, 3833 Bø i Telemark, Norway; [email protected] Abstract: Attempts to classify spoken Arabic dialects based on distinct reflexes of consonant phonemes are known to employ a mixture of parameters, which often conflate linguistic and non- linguistic facts. This article advances an alternative, theory-informed perspective of segmental typology, one that takes phonological properties as the object of investigation. Under this approach, various classificatory systems are legitimate; and I utilize a typological scheme within the framework of feature geometry. A minimalist model designed to account for segment-internal representations produces neat typologies of the Arabic consonants that vary across dialects, namely qaf,¯ gˇ¯ım, kaf,¯ d. ad,¯ the interdentals, the rhotic, and the pharyngeals. Cognates for each of these are analyzed in a typology based on a few monovalent contrastive features. A key benefit of the proposed typologies is that the featural compositions of the various cognates give grounds for their behavior, in terms of contrasts and phonological activity, and potentially in diachronic processes as well. At a more general level, property-based typology is a promising line of research that helps us understand and categorize purely linguistic facts across languages or language varieties.     AMHARIC-ARABIC NEURAL MACHINE TRANSLATION Ibrahim Gashaw and H L Shashirekha Mangalore University, Department of Computer Science, Mangalagangotri, Mangalore-574199 ABSTRACT Many automatic translation works have been addressed between major European language pairs, by taking advantage of large scale parallel corpora, but very few research works are conducted on the Amharic-Arabic language pair due to its parallel data scarcity. Two Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Units (GRU) based Neural Machine Translation (NMT) models are developed using Attention-based Encoder-Decoder architecture which is adapted from the open-source OpenNMT system. In order to perform the experiment, a small parallel Quranic text corpus is constructed by modifying the existing monolingual Arabic text and its equivalent translation of Amharic language text corpora available on Tanzile. LSTM and GRU based NMT models and Google Translation system are compared and found that LSTM based OpenNMT outperforms GRU based OpenNMT and Google Translation system, with a BLEU score of 12%, 11%, and 6% respectively. Preston Oklahoma State University, USA [email protected] Abstract This paper explores the not novel idea that popular notions of the geographical distribution and status of linguistic facts are related to beliefs about the speakers of regional varieties but goes on to develop an approach to the underlying cognitive mechanisms that are employed when such connections are made. A detailed procedural account of the awakening of a response, called one of language regard , is given, as well as a structural account of an underlying attitudinal cognitorium with regard to popular beliefs about United States’ Southerners. A number of studies illustrating a variety of research tools in determining the connections, the response mechanisms, and the underlying structures of belief are provided. Introduction It is important to people whose major interest is in language variation to know where the land lies and how it is shaped and filled up — the facts of physical geography — because such matters have an influence on language. Sarah Thomason notes, for example, that Swahili will probably borrow no linguistic features from Pirahã (2001: 78) because speakers of the two languages are widely separated geographically and unlikely to run into one another. Introductory linguistics commonplaces about blocking (mountains, rivers, etc.) and facilitating (passes, rivers, etc.) geographical elements with regard to language and variety contact are also well known.
