FIELD EVENTS PACKET # 16 INSTRUCTIONS This Learning Packet has two parts: (1) text to read and (2) questions to answer. The text describes a particular sport or physical activity, and relates its history, rules, playing techniques, scoring, notes and news. The Response Forms (questions and puzzles) check your understanding and appreciation of the sport or physical activity. INTRODUCTION Field events are competitions which involve jumping and throwing: the long jump, the high jump, the javelin throw, the discus throw, the hammer throw, the pole vault and the shot-put. HISTORY OF FIELD SPORTS Track and \ eld events are commonly known as “athletics” in England and on the European continent. Such events are among the oldest form of competitive sports ever recorded. These events were encouraged among young athletes in ancient Egypt and Asia. The Olympic Games, which are held every four years, show- case the talents of international athletes who specialize in track and \ eld events. Other competitions for track and \ eld participants include the European, Commonwealth, African, Pan-American and Asian competitions. HOW THE SPORTS ARE PLAYED THE LONG JUMP The long jump, formerly known as “the broad jump,” is considered the least dif \ cult of \ eld events. The most important ingredients for success in this jump are an agile body and “springy” legs, which is a popular way of describing legs whose muscles are capable of the kind of explosive power required to hurl the mass of the body a long distance. Physical Education Learning Packets #16 Field Events Text © 2011 Advantage Press, Inc. The long jump requires the athlete to jump from a takeoff board and leap into the air.

  • Sacramento - July 14-23
2000 Sacramento - July 14-23 The location of the Trials was Sacramento State University, in Hornet Stadium, which was redeveloped prior to the Trials – thanks in part to a $1.1m donation by local property developer Alex Spanos – enabling a maximum crowd of 23,000 to attend. Like most American stadia it was open to the elements, which meant that sprint events were detrimentally affected by the wind, while a lack of cover gave the crowd the opportunity to be tenderized by the sun. The flat stands meant that the 2 outside lanes were virtually impossible to see by those not seated in the first few rows, and policing was required to prevent peoples’ view from being blocked. Other than these surmountable problems, the meeting was the usual competitive hotbed of triumph and tragedy, success and failure. 100 Meters - July 15, 18.00 Hr (-1.7w) 1. 4. • The Month That Was – Alex Wolf-Root Nationals
The Month That Was – Alex Wolf-Root Nationals. That’s the word for June when it comes to USA Track and Field. First you have the NCAA D1 Champs in Des Moines, Iowa, then the month ends up with the USATF Nationals – the qualifier for the World Champs in Daegu, South Korea – at Historic Hayward Field. (Yes, “Historic” is part of the name. Ridiculous? I think yes.) There’s other stuff too, but it’s these bookends that shaped The Month That Was NCAA DI Champs Two years ago, Texas A&M produced an historic double-team championships, both men and women. Last year, Texas A&M produced an historic double-team championships, both men and women. This year? This year, Texas A&M produced an historic double-team championships, both men and women. And in true dramatic track & field action, it came down to the last event both timeads, the 4x400m relay. But arguably the biggest story of the meet was the weather. Freak thunderstorms interrupted the meet multiple times, leading to delays, breaks, and, in one case, postponement of events until the next morning. On day two, with four jumps left in the long jump, two events (javelin, 1,500m run) in the men’s 1,500m, one of three 4x400m women’s heats, all 4x400m men heats, and the men’s 10,000m still to be run, they stopped the meet. Thus, a three-day decathlon was born, all the time qualifiers for the women’s 4x400m relay came in heat three, and the 10,000m/5,000m doublers had it all the more tough, as they had less than 24 hours recovery time.
