After his accession, he abandoned the expansionist policy of his predecessor Trajan and focused on securing the frontiers of the empire and on maintaining its stability. Of the utmost importance was the further integration and participation in his program of the peoples of the Greek East, especially of the Greek mainland and Asia Minor. Hadrian now invited them to become active members of the empire. By his lengthy travels and benefactions to the people of the region and by the creation of the Panhellenion, Hadrian attempted to create a second center of the Empire. Rome, in the West, was the first center; now a second one, in the East, would draw together the Greek people on both sides of the Aegean Sea. Thus he could accelerate the unification of the empire by focusing on its two most important elements, Romans and Greeks. Hadrian channeled his intentions in a number of ways, including the use of specific iconographical types on the coinage of his reign and religious language and themes in his interactions with the Greeks. In both cases it becomes evident that the Greeks not only understood his messages, but they also reacted in a positive way.

    EMANUELA BORGIA, CILICIA AND THE ROMAN EMPIRE STUDIA EUROPAEA GNESNENSIA 16/2017 ISSN 2082-5951 DOI 10.14746/seg.2017.16.15 Emanuela Borgia (Rome) CILICIA AND THE ROMAN EMPIRE: REFLECTIONS ON PROVINCIA CILICIA AND ITS ROMANISATION Abstract This paper aims at the study of the Roman province of Cilicia, whose formation process was quite long (from the 1st century BC to 72 AD) and complicated by various events. Firstly, it will focus on a more precise determination of the geographic limits of the region, which are not clear and quite ambiguous in the ancient sources. Secondly, the author will thoroughly analyze the formation of the province itself and its progressive Romanization. Finally, political organization of Cilicia within the Roman empire in its different forms throughout time will be taken into account. The main question is formulated drawing on – though in a different geographic context – the words of G. Alföldy1: can we consider Cilicia a „typical” province of the Roman empire and how can we determine the peculiarities of this province? Moreover, always recalling a point emphasized by G. Alföldy, we have to take into account that, in order to understand the characteristics of a province, it is fundamental to appreciate its level of Romanization and its importance within the empire from the economic, political, military and cultural points of view2.

    Sanherip Dönemi Kilikya İsyanları Cilician Rebellions in Sennacherib Period Mehmet KURT∗ Öz Kilikya; İran, Mezopotamya, Mısır, Ege, Kıbrıs, Doğu Akdeniz ve Anadolu dünyalarını birbirine bağlayan konumuyla stratejik bir öneme sahip olmuştur. Bölgenin doğal liman olanakları, ormanları ve zengin maden kaynakları sebebiyle çevre devletler için daima bir cazibe merkezi oluşturduğu görülmüştür. Bu bağlamda Yeni Asur Devleti’nin Urartu ve Phryglerle yapmış olduğu mücadelelerde, Kilikya’nın savaş alanı haline gelmesi çok sayıda problemi beraberinde getirmiştir. Kilikya’nın tanımlanan bu özelliğini en iyi yansıtan gelişmelerden birisi, hiç şüphesiz, Sanherip dönemi isyanlarıdır. Bölgenin yerel yöneticileri olan Azitawadda ve Kirua’nın Asur yönetimine karşı çıkarttıkları isyanlar, Asur Devleti için Kilikya’nın stratejik önemini ve sosyo-ekonomik değerini bir kez daha ortaya koymuştur.     Articles from Visible Past Burial Remains in Roman Rough Cilicia Report 2012-04-02 09:04:33 Nicholas Rauh Since 1996 the Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey has examined an extensive area of western Rough Cilicia in order to obtain a more balanced appraisal of the historical process of Romanization in this peripheral region of the Eastern Mediterranean. The main purpose of the survey has been to identify cultural indicators of the indigenous population of western Rough Cilicia as these survive in the landscape and to assess the degree to which indigenous culture was shaped by offshore forces such as commerce and military conquest during antiquity. Clay paste sections of both ceramics include mixture of clay minerals belonging to illite and smectite clay groups. In comparison, percentages of temper and clay paste sections of ceramic-1 and ceramic-2 differ % 4.31 from each other and variety of raw materials making up both ceramic bodies are nearly same except feldspars. But individually quartz and lime percentages between ceramics differ nearly two times. In this opinion we realize that raw materials are mixed by tracking two recipes.

Dr. Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey Üniversitesi Edebiyat Fakültesi Tarih Bölümü ÖZET: Soli (= Viranşehir) yakınlarındaki Lamos (= Limonlu) Çayı’dan Issos (= Kinet Höyük)’a kadar olan sahaya Antik çağda Kilikia Pedias (= Ovalık Kilikya) adı verilmekteydi. Pompeius’un Ovalık Kilikya’nın birçok şehrine yenmiş olduğu korsanları yerleştirmesi, bölge tarihinde yeni bir dönemin de başlangıcı olmuştur. Öte yandan Pompeius’un düzenlemeleri jeopolitik konumu, yer altı ve yer üstü kaynakları nedeniyle bir çekim merkezi olan bölgenin, Anadolu ve Mezopotamya arasındaki konumundan kaynaklanan stratejik önemini daha da artırmıştır. Bütün bu sebeplerle Ovalık Kilikya, Roma’nın bölge yönetim olgusunda önemli bir yer tutmuştur. Özellikle M.Ö. I. yüzyılda Romalılar, Anadolu’nun Roma hâkimiyetindeki diğer bölgelerinde olduğu gibi Ovalık Kilikya için de yerel güçlerin ön plana çıkartıldığı dolaylı yönetimi tercih etmişlerdir. Bu bağlamda bölge, Roma’nın oluşturduğu bağımlı krallıklar vasıtasıyla Suriye ve Parthlarla olan ilişkilerde tampon bir saha ve ileri bir karakol işlevi görmüştü. Ovalık Kilikya’da Roma yönetim olgusunun bütün inceliklerini ise, Tarkondimotos ve krallığının tarihinde görmek mümkündür. İşte bu makalede Antik kaynaklar ile epigrafik ve nümizmatik bulgular ışığında Tarkondimotos Krallığı’nın Roma’nın bölge yönetimindeki rolü ele alınmıştır. Lafayette, IN 47907 *corresponding author Keywords: loose coupling, digital humanities, collaboration, online platform, mapping, GIS 1 Abstract Background: The project presents the strategy adopted by the Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey team for publishing its primary data and reports via three potentially transformative strategies for digital humanities: 1. Loose coupling of digital data curation and publishing platforms. In loosely coupled systems, components share only a limited set of simple assumptions, which enables systems to evolve dynamically. 2. Collaborative creation of map based narrative content. 3. Connecting print scholarship (book, reports, article) to online resources via two-dimensional barcodes (2D codes) that can be printed on paper and can call up hyperlinks when scanned with a Smartphone. Case study: The present essay provides a higher level framework for developing digital humanities in in general, via three possible strategies generated by loosely coupling two autonomous services: Visible Past, dedicated to web collaboration and digital-print publishing and Open Context, which is a geo-historical data archiving and publishing service. Conclusions: The Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey, Visible Past, and Open Context work together to illustrate a new genre of scholarship, which combine qualitative narratives and quantitative representations of space and social phenomena.
