  • Hadrian and the Greek East
HADRIAN AND THE GREEK EAST: IMPERIAL POLICY AND COMMUNICATION DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Demetrios Kritsotakis, B.A, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2008 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Fritz Graf, Adviser Professor Tom Hawkins ____________________________ Professor Anthony Kaldellis Adviser Greek and Latin Graduate Program Copyright by Demetrios Kritsotakis 2008 ABSTRACT The Roman Emperor Hadrian pursued a policy of unification of the vast Empire. After his accession, he abandoned the expansionist policy of his predecessor Trajan and focused on securing the frontiers of the empire and on maintaining its stability. Of the utmost importance was the further integration and participation in his program of the peoples of the Greek East, especially of the Greek mainland and Asia Minor. Hadrian now invited them to become active members of the empire. By his lengthy travels and benefactions to the people of the region and by the creation of the Panhellenion, Hadrian attempted to create a second center of the Empire. Rome, in the West, was the first center; now a second one, in the East, would draw together the Greek people on both sides of the Aegean Sea. Thus he could accelerate the unification of the empire by focusing on its two most important elements, Romans and Greeks. Hadrian channeled his intentions in a number of ways, including the use of specific iconographical types on the coinage of his reign and religious language and themes in his interactions with the Greeks. In both cases it becomes evident that the Greeks not only understood his messages, but they also reacted in a positive way.

Firstly, it will focus on a more precise determination of the geographic limits of the region, which are not clear and quite ambiguous in the ancient sources. Secondly, the author will thoroughly analyze the formation of the province itself and its progressive Romanization. Finally, political organization of Cilicia within the Roman empire in its different forms throughout time will be taken into account. Key words Cilicia, provincia Cilicia, Roman empire, Romanization, client kings 295 STUDIA EUROPAEA GNESNENSIA 16/2017 · ROME AND THE PROVINCES Quos timuit superat, quos superavit amat (Rut. Nam., De Reditu suo, I, 72) This paper attempts a systematic approach to the study of the Roman province of Cilicia, whose formation process was quite long and characterized by a complicated sequence of historical and political events. The main question is formulated drawing on – though in a different geographic context – the words of G. Alföldy1: can we consider Cilicia a „typical” province of the Roman empire and how can we determine the peculiarities of this province? Moreover, always recalling a point emphasized by G. Alföldy, we have to take into account that, in order to understand the characteristics of a province, it is fundamental to appreciate its level of Romanization and its importance within the empire from the economic, political, military and cultural points of view2.

Articles from Visible Past Burial Remains in Roman Rough Cilicia Report 2012-04-02 09:04:33 Nicholas Rauh Since 1996 the Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey has examined an extensive area of western Rough Cilicia in order to obtain a more balanced appraisal of the historical process of Romanization in this peripheral region of the Eastern Mediterranean. The main purpose of the survey has been to identify cultural indicators of the indigenous population of western Rough Cilicia as these survive in the landscape and to assess the degree to which indigenous culture was shaped by offshore forces such as commerce and military conquest during antiquity. In peripheral areas such as western Rough Cilicia, evidence of native adoption of imported modes of economic production Scan this code to furnish a unique opportunity to view the development of an imperial world system see the online through the lens of local societies. To date, the survey has investigated nine small version of the urban sites characterized as “cities” or poleis, twelve “village” sites, and more than report 100 non-urban loci of past human experience. The variety and the unique character of burial centers in western Rough Cilicia reveal a great deal about the cultural background of the region’s inhabitants during the Roman Era. The attributes preserved in epigraphical and material remains of this region indicate that the population consisted of urban land-owning elites dwelling principally along the coast, similar landowners residing in mixed settlements in the midlands or mesogeia, and “Isaurian” pastoralists living in the highlands. Rough Cilicia (south coastal Turkey) was a mountainous coastal region of marginal significance.

  • Ovalık Kilikya'da M.Ö. I. Yüzyıl Roma Yönetim Olgusu Ve Tarkondimotos
Sayı 31 Ovalık Kilikya’da M.Ö. I. Yüzyıl Roma Yönetim Olgusu Ve Aralık 2011 Tarkondimotos Krallığı OVALIK KİLİKYA’DA M.Ö. I. YÜZYIL ROMA YÖNETİM OLGUSU VE TARKONDİMOTOS KRALLIĞI Mehmet KURT Yrd. Loose coupling of digital data curation and publishing platforms. In loosely coupled systems, components share only a limited set of simple assumptions, which enables systems to evolve dynamically. 2. Collaborative creation of map based narrative content. 3. Connecting print scholarship (book, reports, article) to online resources via two-dimensional barcodes (2D codes) that can be printed on paper and can call up hyperlinks when scanned with a Smartphone. Case study: The present essay provides a higher level framework for developing digital humanities in in general, via three possible strategies generated by loosely coupling two autonomous services: Visible Past, dedicated to web collaboration and digital-print publishing and Open Context, which is a geo-historical data archiving and publishing service. Conclusions: The Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey, Visible Past, and Open Context work together to illustrate a new genre of scholarship, which combine qualitative narratives and quantitative representations of space and social phenomena.
