MARK PARISH BURLINGTON, VT Counterfeit versus Real - Have you given a twenty, fifty or one hundred dollar bill to pay for grocer- ies, and then for a few moments feel like a criminal as the cashier examines the money? Counterfeit money is becoming more common, so the new bills today are carefully crafted with certain water- marks and other indicators that help to confirm it is real. Why do they take such precautions? The counterfeit money, though it looks good, feels good and can fool some; ultimately it gives nothing and is totally useless! This is exactly what Jesus is trying to steer us from. A life lived in opposition to Jesus, gives us nothing and is ultimately useless. When we choose to live according to our plan, rather than God’s plan, we loose the ability to bring the light of Christ to others. We seek the counterfeit in being guided by our selfish de- sires and actions. The way that Jesus calls us to live, brings us the fullness of life and makes us a light for others- directing them to Jesus. When we live our lives in union with Jesus, we truly become the salt of the earth and the light of the world because we reflect to others the way that leads to eternal life. Just as none of us would want to be caught with counterfeit money at the store, may we never be caught serving counterfeit love to others. In other words, may our lives mirror the life of Jesus so that our actions season and light the world with God’s love. Fr. Does it matter? As professor and speaker, Dr. Mark Miravalle explains, not only is the doctrine of Purgatory true, and deeply rooted in Sa- cred Scripture and Tradition, but the prac- tice of offering prayers and sacrifices for the souls of the dead is a critically important responsibility for every member of the Body of Christ-the family of the Church. Behold your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his home” (Jn 19:26-27). ...To Mary, Mother of tender love, we wish to entrust all those who are ill in body and soul, that she may sustain them in hope. We ask her also to help us to be welcoming to our sick brothers and sisters. The Church knows that she requires a special grace to live up to her evangelical task of serving the sick. May our prayers to the Mother of God see us united in an incessant plea that every member of the Church may live with love the vocation to serve life and health. May the Virgin Mary intercede for this Twenty-sixth World Day of the Sick; may she help the sick to experience their suffering in communion with the Lord Jesus; and may she support all those who care for them.

  • World Marriage Day to Be Celebrated This Year on Feb
World Marriage Day to be celebrated this year on Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day WASHINGTON (CNS) — This year, World Marriage Day, observed annually on the second Sunday of February, will be celebrated Feb. 14, which also is the feast of St. Valentine and which, since the eighth century, has been a celebration of love and affection. In the United States, National Marriage Week leads up to World Marriage Day and this year’s theme for the weeklong observance, which began Feb. 7, is “To Have, To Hold, To Honor.” The theme was chosen “to highlight how married couples live and renew their wedding promises daily in the building up of the domestic church in their homes, particularly as many couples and families have spent more time at home together this year,” said a news release from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Each year, the week provides “an opportunity for the Catholic Church to focus on building a culture of life and love that begins with supporting and promoting marriage and the family,” the release said, adding that the week also “is a great prompt for everyone to reflect on the gift marriage is to our Church and our country, as well as an opportunity for couples to build up their own marriages.” Two events during the week will be livestreamed on the USCCB’s Facebook page: a Rosary for married and engaged couples Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. (ET), led by San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone of San Francisco, chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth; and a conversation about St.

It salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily, married life. History: The idea of celebrating marriage began in Baton Rouge, La., in 1981, when couples encouraged the mayor, the governor and the Bishop to proclaim St. Valentines Day as "We Believe in Marriage Day". The event was so successful; the idea was presented to and adopted by Worldwide Marriage Encounter's national leadership. By 1982, 43 Governors officially proclaimed the day and celebrations spread to U.S. military bases in several foreign countries. In 1983, the name was changed to "World Marriage Day", designated to be celebrated each year on the second Sunday in February. WMD celebrations continue to grow and spread to more countries and faith expressions every year. Symbol: Our World Marriage Day Symbol speaks of the role and values we proclaim. Husband and wife are symbolically seen as two candle-like figures, reminding us that married love calls us to help enlighten the world.
