The Kings Head is the original building of what is now known as The Ships Tavern and The Kings Head, and was built sometime in the late 1600′s. The building is an original longhouse that was initially used as a farm, later being utilized as a scrumpy house with it’s own cider press. It is believed that there is a secret room alongside the Kings Head that was bricked up some 200 years ago and no one has set foot inside since. It is also said that the building is haunted by 2 ghosts, though the present Landlord has yet to encounter them! SHERFORD UPDATE: Meet the very first Sherford Minister, Tom Brassil. Here is what he had to say about his role, his exciting plans and where you can expect to find him at the new community! Sherford is an exciting place to be, for all sorts of reasons. For some of us it is a chance to own a brand new home. For others, maybe the true excitement lies in being part of a whole new community! For the past three years I have been working as a trainee minister in Elburton, at St. Matthew’s Church, and we have had an eye on Sherford for much of that time as a possible next step. So I was delighted when our local Bishop asked me to consider moving to Sherford to start a church here. As you may know, the Church of exists to make sure there is a local church in every neighbourhood and community up and down the country. This is not just because they want to look after Christians, but also because they want everyone to have the opportunity to find out about God if they want to, to have Christian baptisms, marriages and funerals, and generally to feel spiritually looked-after. That is what my job will be in Sherford as its Minister. A big part of that will be forming Sherford Community Church, a group of Christians meeting together to worship God and to work together to care spiritually for the whole community. My family and I are very excited to have the opportunity to be part of the Sherford community right from the beginning, watching it grow and blossom, and I see Sher- ford Community Church fitting into that. The church will, we hope, be somewhere that is welcoming both to Christians and those just looking into the Christian faith. As a church we want to be part of the community, and to be a place where community Elburton Primary School are hoping to can grow. So we will be looking from the start to provide opportunities for us as resi- raise £35,000 for a much needed dents to meet and get to know one another, and to support one another. For exam- additional playground. You can find out ple, we are hoping to start a toddler group early on, where parents and carers and more and donate by visiting their children can make new friends, and we would be open to suggestions of other www.crowdfunder.co.uk/elburton- groups and activities that could be started around Sherford. It will be some years before we can build a ‘church building’ in Sherford, but in the primary-school-playground meantime we will be sharing community space with other groups trying to make a difference in the new town. In any case, you don’t need to ‘go to church’ to find us: you’ll see us in the streets, in the park, etc. I hope to meet you soon!
