2018 ALASKA TRIBAL COURT DIRECTORY Prepared by Alaska Legal Services Corporation Foreword & Acknowledgements In 2012, due to the support and efforts of many people and organizations, Alaska Legal Services Corporation (ALSC) released the first Alaska Tribal Court Directory. The original directory was compiled from information shared by 90 Alaska Tribes through ALSC’s 2011 tribal court survey, supplemented by additional information from Carol Brown and April January of the Association of Village Council Presidents and Lisa Jaeger of Tanana Chiefs Conference. The tribal court survey was made possible by the support and cooperation of Gloria Gorman from the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Diane Payne of the Justice for Native Children Projects. This updated directory includes information from 102 Alaska Tribes, which was gathered through a new survey issued in partnership with the Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (ANDVSA). Changes and additions have been made where Tribes provided updated contact information and data about the types of cases their tribal courts handle. Additional information was gathered and shared with ALSC by Denise Nerby and Sinea Williams of the Association of Village Council Presidents. A big thank you to all of the Tribes that responded to our requests for information and shared valuable data with us on the critical work Alaska tribal courts are doing to serve their children, families, and communities. As a word of caution, there may be Tribes operating tribal courts that are not in this directory. This directory should not be used as a definitive statement of the number of tribal courts operating in Alaska or of the types of cases being heard by tribal courts. -

There are various scientists wandering around with clipboards, pocket protectors, thi ck - rimmed glasses, and classic white shin - hanging lab coats. It's a typical day at the ol' science lab doing typical science lab shit. Trotting down one of the many isles like it owns the place is a Golden Retriever. Like many Golden Retriever, this one ha s a perpetual smile on its face and looks about as happy as a pig in shit just being there. We focus on its collar to find its name is GINGER ). Ginger trots down the a isle on its way to its owner, Dr. Jack Hammer. Jack is a regular Rico Suave: handsomely g ood looking with a chiseled chin and a beefed out frame to match (i.e., the perfect role for Paul Logan). He is also sporting a lab coat and thick rimmed glasses because he's a scientist and that's what scientists do. He's currently working on some science shit, pouring liquid into various beakers, analyzing data, and concentrating intensely. Ginger stops trotting and sits by Jack , obviously wanting attention. -

It's a book, by cracky, about the 1802; hopefully the oddest and most entertaining book on any microprocessor ever written. The 1802 is, after all, an odd and entertaining chip. This view is not shared by all. Physicist Mike Brandl said he could swallow a mouthful of sand and barf up a better microprocessor than the 1802, and another colleague claims its instruction set demands that he program with his left hand. Bitch, bitch, bitch. I kinda like it. Much of this material I.rd oped out while recovering from hernia surgery not long ago and couldn't lift anything heavier than a 40-pin DIP. I had a lot of fun and thought you might like to be copied in on it. Like everything else I do, this book is an experiment. If I don't take a serious loss on production and mailing costs, I may do up another one. I've got a little gimcrack on the bench that'll make you people drool: an easy-to-build thermal printer for the 1802 that you can make for seventy bucks flat with all new parts. I'm working on an automatic phone dialer board and a few other things. Selectric interface. Robotics. Ham radio stuff. All kindsa things. Are you interested? Would you lay out another five beans for a Volume II? Let me know; drop me a note with any and all comments and spare not the spleen; I'm a hard man to offend and I lQ~~ crackpot letters. -

Conclusion 20 2 1.1 Introduction In this essay I examine the Haitian-American author Edwidge Danticat‟s1 representation of mother and daughter relationships between two cultures in two of the stories in her short story collection Krik? Krak! Her stories focus on problems with immigration, gender and history, and they concern mother-daughter relationships. Characteristic of Danticat‟s stories is the focus on women and their search for identity.2 The mothers and daughters in the two stories I have chosen to examine are immigrants from Haiti of the first or second generation and have lived in the United States for several years. Krik? Krak! focuses on women, their struggles and motherhood. In the last two stories of Krik? Krak!, “Caroline‟s Wedding” and “New York Day Women” the mother‟s and daughter‟s relationships are influenced by the situation of being caught in the middle of two cultures, a situation that is problematic both for the first and second generation. While reading these stories I found that the rifts between the mothers and daughters are profound, and that the gap between the mothers and daughters were widened by the differences between Haitian and American culture and by the complexity of the political relationship between the countries. -

Everyday, an average of 20 American families adopt children from overseas, mostly from Third World countries. Adoption of children from China by citizens of the United States began in 1992 when the Chinese government passed a law ratifying international adoption (China Adoption Website, 2007). As of 2001, more than 23,000 children born in China have left Chinese orphanages to join adoptive parents in the U. S. (Miller-Loessi & Kilic, 1999). In 2006 alone, Americans adopted 6,493 children from China, more than from any other country. -

Furthermore, Lemonade centers black life while presenting mainstream audiences with poetry and avant-garde imagery that challenge dominant views of black womanhood. Using theorists bell hooks, Stuart Hall, Patricia Hill- Collins and Audre Lorde, among others, I argue that Beyoncé’s work challenges the understanding of artistic production while simultaneously fitting within a long tradition of black feminist cultural production. -

MATHEMATICS FOR PARENTS: FACILITATING PARENTS’ AND CHILDREN’S UNDERSTANDING IN MATHEMATICS Marta Civil Cristi Guevara Martha Allexsaht-Snider University of Arizona University of Arizona University of Georgia [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] The study examines ethnically and linguistically diverse parents’ learning in an eight-week Math for Parents course on fractions, decimals and percentages. Analysis of classroom observations, interviews, focus groups, written feedback, videotapes, and task-based/clinical interviews provided rich data yielding findings about both parents’ affective and cognitive learning as well as their understandings of how to support their children’s learning of mathematics. The research points to an appreciation among the parents for the importance of learning mathematics with understanding. It also raises some questions concerning the goals of mathematical learning experiences for parents. Context Our research takes place in the context of a large parental involvement project in K-12 mathematics. MAPPS1 (Math and Parent Partnerships in the Southwest) is a four-year long project that focuses on parental involvement in mathematics. It is now in place at four sites: in Tucson since 1999 and at the other three sites since 2001. The implementation at the different sites varies somewhat according to local needs, but overall we share some common goals. One such goal is to develop leadership teams (parents and teachers/administrators) that will help in the mathematics education outreach -
