This document gives a historical record of the changes made to the dataset since its initial release. It will also contain, if applicable, a list of known errata that will be updated in the next release of the dataset. We encourage scholars using the data to always use the latest version available if possible, but provide this list as a reference point as to whether or not an upgrade from a previous release of the data is necessary for a particular analysis.

A note on temporary coalitions in Syria
In this update of the non-state dataset we have coded different so-called operation rooms (i.e. the organizational structure that is formed by a set of warring parties before launching a joint offensive) in Syria as temporary coalitions. In other cases, all actor names within a temporary coalition are listed, but this is not the case here. While the SideAComponents and SideBComponents columns in the dataset contain the IDs for all actors in an operation room the SideA and SideB column only contain the name of the operation room. The operation rooms in Syria in some cases contain more than 30 participating actors. One actor is often participating in more than one operation room at the same time. A note on Dyad IDs
In order to reduce the risk of confusion and mistakes when using the UCDP Non-state Conflict Dataset together with other UCDP datasets a minor alteration of the Dyad IDs has been made. All non-state conflicts have received a new Dyad ID beginning with 2- followed by the old Dyad ID. For example Dyad ID 10 is now Dyad ID 2-10. In UCDP data 1 stands for state-based conflict, 2 stands for non-state conflict and 3 stands for one-sided violence.
New definitions of temporal precision scores
The variables StartPrec, StartPrec2 and EpEndPrec are coded to highlight the level of certainty for the date set in the StartDate, StartDate2 and EpEndDate variables. In version 2.5-2014 of the UCDP Non-state Conflict Dataset the definition of precision score 3 has been altered to also include events that are known to have taken place within a 30-day period, but not necessarily a calendar month. Those have previously been included in precision 4.

New definition of StartDate
To further streamline UCDP datasets, a decision has been made to streamline the StartDates, StartDate2 and EpEndDate variables in the datasets where they are used. For the Non-State dataset this has only had an impact on the StartDate variable (the others being coded the same way as before).
StartDate is from here on coded as the first known day where fighting has occurred in a dyad, resulting in at least one fatality. The precision score for how well we know when the first death in a dyad occurred has also been changed slightly (see below).
Please note that StartDate2 still corresponds with the first known date when the dyad has resulted in at least 25 deaths in one episode of fighting. Thus, if you are interested in finding the StartDate as it was used in earlier versions of the UCDP Non-state Dataset you may use the StartDate2 for the first episode of fighting in the dyad.
Note on some name changes - Location Two additional countries have received “added” names in parentheses from previous years. This is Madagascar (Malagasy) and Yemen (North Yemen).
Note on some name changes - Sides Actor names are from here on written only with the abbreviation of a group, or, when there is no abbreviation, the full name. Previously the full name was given in parenthesis when Side A or Side B was an abbreviated group. This change corresponds with the way Sides are described in other UCDP datasets and is part of an attempt to streamline our data even more. More information on the actors can be found in the UCDP Actor Dataset.
Parentheses remain in some cases. The first reason is related to groups identified by religion or ethnicity, e.g. Christians (Indonesia), Christians (Nigeria) and Christians (Philippines), or Uzbeks (Kyrgyzstan). The second reason for a parenthesis is related to clan structures in, mainly, Somalia where the clan tree is given in parenthesis, e.g. Garre subclan of Digil clan (Digil-Mirifle) or Habar Gidir clan (Hawiye). Thirdly, parenthesis may remain for groups with the same name that operate in different countries, as different organisations, e.g. Mara 18 (Guatemala) and Mara 18 (Honduras).

New IDs for groups fighting together
In previous versions of the dataset multiple actor IDs separated by a comma have been used for groups fighting together. In version 2.4-2012, new actor IDs have been given to these temporary coalitions. The components of the coalitions are listed with actor IDs in the new variables ‘Side A Components’ and ‘Side B Components’.

New format for start- and end dates
In order to streamline UCDP’s data outputs with regard to the format for writing start- and end dates, this has been altered in version 2.4-2012 of the dataset. In previous versions, a start- or end precision of 3 (meaning that day is unknown; month and year are precisely coded) or 4 (month is assigned; year is coded precisely) meant that the day was set to the first of that month. In this version, however, this has been changed to the last of the given month. Furthermore, while in previous versions a start- or end precision of 5 (day and month are unknown, year is coded precisely) meant that the date was set to 1 January, this has now been changed to 31 December.
A note on some name changes In version 2.4-2012, an effort has been made to simplify the names of some states. Other names have been corrected in this version.
