She graduated from the Vladimir Art School #2, from the class of Edward Shilov. She is the winner of the Russian, Inter-Regions, Regional and City competi­ tions, as well as tbe h1temational competition in Italy. She also composes music and plays piano. One of her last compositions - Sonata for Violin and Orchestra in Four Pa.."'tS was played in Moscow. She was one of the winners of t.'1e composers competition. She is one of the participants of the international progrmn "T.Je New Names", sponsored by the President and one of the 3 students in Russia that have received the scholarships of the Russian Ministry of Culture this year. Within the last two years, she gave 63 solo concerts and I played in forty others. She plays classical, folk original and post-modem music. She bas perfonned in Russia, including Moscow, Kaliningrad, Vladimir, Poland, Italy and England. I Vasya Khoroshev is 12 years old. He is the student of the Vladimir Art School #2 and is in the orchestra and vocal classes. He is the winner of international, I­ Russian Regional and City competitions. He participated in a number of concerts for the Russian Government in one of the most prestigious Columns Hall in Moscow accompanied by the orchestra of the Moscow Conservatory. I He sang for the Ministers of Defense of Russia and Independent states, at the Italian and Bulgarian Embassies. In 1996, he participated in the concert tour in England in which 9 cities were toured. He was praised by members of the I House of Lords who attended the concerts. In 1997,,he had performances in Vladimir and Berlin, Germany which were accompanied by the Berlin Sym­ phonic Orchestra. Vasya has appeared on Russian and Berlin TV and also has a CD. I Tatyana Savostyanova graduated from the Musical Academy named after Gnessiny and Moscow which is considered to be one of the best in the world. She sings with the Bolshoi Orchestra of Moscow Conservatory named after P.I. Tchaikovskii. She is a participant in concerts for the Russian Government She I has a diploma of the Best Teacher of the International Vocal competition in Russia and Ekaterinburg. She is the teacher of Vasya Khoroshev. She has sung concerts in England and 9 other cities including Berlin, Germany. I .

He was therefore born French! Giuseppe Verdi He was refused admission by the Conservatory of Milan because he did not have enough talent… …that Conservatory now carries his name. In Busseto, Verdi met Antonio Barezzi, a local merchant and music lover, who became his patron, financed some of his studies and helped him throughout the dark years… Thanks to Barezzi, Verdi went to Milano to take private lessons. He then returned to his town, where he became the town music master.

    Richard Wagner. Richard Wagner (22 May 1813, Leipzig, Germany – 13 February 1883, Venice, Italy) was a German composer, conductor, theatre director and essayist, primarily known for his operas (or "music dramas", as they were later called). Unlike most other great opera composers, Wagner wrote both the scenario and libretto for his works. Wagner's compositions, particularly those of his later period, are notable for contrapuntal texture, rich chromaticism, harmonies and orchestration, and elaborate use of leitmotifs: musical themes associated with particular characters, locales or plot elements. Wagner pioneered advances in musical language, such as extreme chromaticism and quickly shifting tonal centres, which greatly influenced the development of European classical music. He transformed musical thought through his idea of Gesamtkunstwerk ("total artwork"), the synthesis of all the poetic, visual, musical and dramatic arts, epitomized by his monumental four- opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen (1876). To try to stage these works as he imagined them, Wagner built his own opera house, the Bayreuth Festspielhaus. Giuseppe Verdi. Verdi (October 9 or 10, 1813 – January 27, 1901) was an Italian Romantic composer, mainly of opera. He was one of the most influential composers in the 19th century. His works are frequently performed in opera houses throughout the world and, transcending the genre, some of his themes have long since taken root in popular culture - such as "La donna è mobile" from Rigoletto, "Va, pensiero" (The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves) from Nabucco, and "Libiamo ne' lieti calici" (The Drinking Song) from La traviata. Although his work was sometimes criticized for using a generally diatonic rather than a chromatic musical idiom and having a tendency toward melodrama, Verdi’s masterworks dominate the standard repertoire a century and a half after their composition.

Remind students to ask for clarification of any unknown words or concepts. Tell students that they will be reading about the composer of La Traviata, Giuseppe Verdi, and studying an abbreviated a timeline of his life.
