Southwest Region 30. Federal Center Building, Battle Creek, Calhoun, Michigan • Nest location: BC Tower • 1st year active: 2006 • Total number of chicks produced to date: 0 • Male: Undetermined • Female: Undetermined • Young: • Notes: The installed nest box remains on the Federal Center but was again not used for nesting. Birds have historically roosted on the nearby Heritage Tower which is currently unoccupied and had been condemned. Josh Haas of Battle Creek Brigham Audubon worked with the Battle Creek Foundation and the building's new owners to obtain permission to install a nest box on the building in March of 2018. The falcon pair in Battle Creek laid at least 2 eggs in a ledge on the building, but the fate of the nest is unknown as continued building deterioration prevented further monitoring, and exterior renovation work may have disturbed the birds. The nest box appeared to be of no interest to the birds and was removed later in the year. A pair remained in the city at the end of the summer and were being seen regularly around the Federal Center. 31. Boji Tower/Michigan National Bank/State Capitol, Lansing, Ingham, Michigan • Nest location: Comerica Bank • 1st year active: 1998 • Total number of chicks produced to date: 0 • Male: Undetermined • Female: Titan (b/r C/32) hatched at Jackson County Building, Jackson, MI in 2014 • Notes: Titan was discovered defending three eggs by Eyde Company staff on 5 April. This was the first year that birds had been found using the Comerica Bank building. This is likely the pair that has historically been roosting and attempting to nest on the nearby Boji Tower. The eggs were laid in a recessed lip at the top of the building's exterior wall. The area is approximately 2 feet deep and lined with metal sheeting. When the nest was checked again on 1 May, only one broken egg remained. Nest failure was likely due to heavy rain. The adults remain in the area, and the building owner is open to improving the site to increase its likelihood of success. 34. Fifth Third Bank Building, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo, Michigan • Nest location: Fifth Third Bank Building • Online resources: http://www.kalamazoofalcons.com/ • 1st year active: 2010 • Total number of chicks produced to date: 19 • Male: "Kewpee" (b/r 81/D) hatched at Lima, OH in 2010 • Female: Rebecca (b/g *W/*C) hatched at South Bend, IN in 2009 • Young: Merze, F (b/blu 27/Z) 1947-33153 Iris, F (b/blu 28/Z) 1947-33154 Zoe, F (b/blu 29/Z) 1947-33155 Jeter, M (b/blu 30/C) 1156-26732 • Notes: In past years, when a youngster fell or jumped into the well he would not be able to get out on his own because of the depth. A ramp was installed in the window well in the fall of 2016 in the hope that any young falcon that ends up on the floor of the window well could walk up the ramp to get back to the box and the parapet ledge. This year the young birds entertained themselves by jumping into the window well and hanging out in the shade, then walking back up the ramp. This behavior started during the very hot Memorial Day weekend, and it seemed that the youngsters figured out it was cooler in the shade down there. Pretty soon Rebecca and Kewpee were jumping in and flying back out which is the first year they have been seen doing that.

Merze: This bird was named Merze in honor of Merze Tate. Vernie Merze Tate was a professor, scholar and expert on United States diplomacy. She was the first African-American graduate to earn a B.A. degree from Western Michigan Teachers College, first African-American woman to graduate from University of Oxford, first African-American woman to earn a Ph.D. in government and international relations from Harvard University, as well as one of the first two female members to join the Department of History at Howard University. When Merze Tate graduated from WMU, despite her stellar academic record, African Americans were not hired to teach secondary education in Michigan. She went on to teach at Crispus Attucks High School in Indianapolis, IN, where she created a Travel Club, which took the students of the all-African American high school, to such places as Washington D.C., Niagara Falls, and Pennsylvania during the Depression Era. A current travel club for girls was started by Sonya Bernard- Hollins in 2008 when she learned of Tate’s legacy; the Merze Tate Explorers visited on July 19 to “meet” Merze, the falcon. Merze was found dead by a groundskeeper at Senior Services on July 23 after apparently hitting a telephone pole or wire.

Iris: Iris was a name suggested by Parchment 6th graders in reference to the state wildflower of Michigan, the dwarf lake iris. Iris, the Peregrine falcon, sports a strong blonde eyebrow and cheek patch in her juvenile marking, which resemble the yellow band in the sepals of the blue iris flower.

Jeter: The next bird to leave the box was the male, who had been named Jeter, after Kalamazoo baseball legend Derek Jeter. On May 31, he tried to make his first flight and ended up on East Michigan Avenue and was hit by a car. 35.
