Dat geldt in ieder geval voor leraren in de natuurwetenschap die houden van waarnemingen in de vrije natuur. Mijn eerste kennismaking met hem had dan ook plaats via de Minnaert: zo heten de drie delen van De Natuurkunde van 't Vrije Veld die ik omstreeks 1970 heb aangeschaft. De eerste druk van dit boek verscheen eind jaren dertig. In de jaren negentig kwamen van het eerste deel van Minnaerts trilogie, Licht en kleur in het landschap, nieuw geïllustreerde uitgaven in het Engels en Duits op de markt naast de herdruk van de Minnaert in het Nederlands. Het is dan ook een uniek boek. Minnaert had vijfentwintig jaar lang natuurverschijnselen geobserveerd, daar aantekeningen van gemaakt en onderzoek gedaan naar de fysische verklaringen. -

It’s also an opportunity to get to know the lives and work of some of the key women who have overcome prejudice and exclusion to make significant contributions to our field. We only include a representative selection of living women astronomers about whom non-technical material at the level of beginning astronomy students is easily available. Lack of inclusion in this introductory list is not meant to suggest any less importance. We also don’t include Wikipedia articles, although those are sometimes a good place for students to begin. Suggestions for additional non-technical listings are most welcome. Receiving a BS degree In Chemistry from Slippery Rock State College, he went on to take graduate chemistry courses at the University of Pittsburgh, Western Re- serve University and special advanced chemistry courses at American University, Washington, D.C. Roy makes his head- quarters at Murrysville, Pa., with his wife, a former teacher, and two sons. Outdoor enthusiasts, the Cellichs spend their week- ends swimming, hiking and skiing at the Seven Springs resort area where they have a cottage. -

A l^-pound Freshman Orientation Kit and the first letter from home Welcome to Cam p Sw arthm ore “My biggest piece of advice is to have fun this week and make the most of this tremendous opportunity before classes start.” This advice from Sophomore Bob Kuske was the first of many pieces of friendly advice Katherine Harper ’77 was to hear on her first day at Swarthmore. Kathie’s first day as a freshman began shortly after midnight when she boarded the plane to Philadelphia from her hometown of Tempe, Arizona. It was more than 24 hours later before Kathie got to bed in her new home in Wharton. In those 24-plus hours Kathie began the four-day process of getting oriented to her new life. A 77-man freshman orientation committee, composed mostly of sophomores, 1 had been working since last spring to plan activities that would give Kathie and her 342 classmates (the largest freshman class in | the College’s history) a helpful introduction | to the campus and to each other. They met them at the airport and train I station and manned the registration tables ini Parrish, where freshmen picked up a packet I literature they had assembled and their room key. They directed freshmen to their dormitories and helped them with luggage. They gave a tea for freshmen and their parents so they would have a chance to meet President Friend, also beginning his freshm year. Later President Friend addressed the freshman class in the Meeting House and th freshmen returned to their dorms for hall meetings with the upperclass resident assistants. -

His educa- tion was acquired principally at home until the age of twelve, and then at the Princeton Preparatory School and Princeton University; from the latter he was graduated in 1897 with the highest standing ever attained by a Princeton undergraduate. Throughout all of his mature life, as a member of the Princeton faculty, he lived at 79 Alexander Street, but spent many summers on the New England coast or in travel. Russell was awarded in due course all the formal distinctions that America's leading astronomer merited. He was made a foreign as- sociate of the Royal Societies of London, Edinburgh, and Belgium; Correspondent of the French Academy of Sciences, and Associate of the Royal Astronomical Society of London. The Personal is Archival: Researching and Teaching With Stories of Women Engineers, Scientists, and Doctors Abstract Personal stories from archives are essential to understand the historical gendering of American science, medicine, technology, and innovation. Advocates promoted science, medicine, and engineering to young men, yet the twentieth-century brought increasing numbers of women into STEM education and employment. This paper illustrates the above by offering guidance to key archival and digital collections that show how women (individually and as groups) made places for themselves in modern science, technology, and medicine. Sources illustrate complex intersections for women simultaneously shaping professional and personal identities. This paper suggests how historians can reach beyond individual biographies to build broader analyses that deploy insights about personal experiences to parse cultural understandings of STEM and diversity. -
