BY NATE JOHNSTON I was quite surprised to find myself reading a New York Times online article describing the death of Osama bin Laden. I had fantasized about his death as a kid, but strangely enough, I didn’t feel anything as I read the article. Not joy, not sadness, not anger, not even relief. Does that make me a bad Christian? I don’t think that a Christian has any business rejoicing in the death or downfall of another person. In Matthew 22:39, Jesus told us to “love your neighbor as yourself.” I never understood it fully until I read “Mere Christianity” by C.S. Lewis. Lewis argued that you don’t have to like some to love them as yourself. A charred parking space was left behind when the car’s remnant was towed away. “It was just a shell. There was nothing left but metal, and even some of that had started to melt away.
