  • Maria Valtorta Was Born in Caserta, Italy on March 14, 1897
    In Response to Various Questions Regarding “The Poem of the Man-God" Published on April 15, 2006 by Dr. Mark Miravalle, Professor of theology and Mariology at Franciscan University of Steubenville. [Note: The Poem of the Man God has since been published under the title The Gospel as Revealed to Me, but they are the same book.] Maria Valtorta was born in Caserta, Italy on March 14, 1897. Deeply pious, Maria was strongly attracted to God from early childhood, but it was as a young woman that she started reporting mystical experiences. In 1920 she was randomly attacked by a young man who hit her in the back with an iron bar. Badly injured, she was bedridden for three months and her health began its gradual decline. In the years to follow she made a personal offering of her sufferings to the two Divine attributes of Love and Justice, and by April, 1934, she was permanently confined to her bed. It was in 1943 that Valtorta began to write down in her notebooks the “dictations,” the mystical visions and messages she reported receiving from Jesus and Mary, and the years between 1943 and 1947 were the period of her greatest output. She wrote almost 15000 pages of dictation, a little less than two-thirds of which comprised The Poem of the Man-God, a substantial work on the life of Jesus Christ beginning from the birth of Our Lady and ending at her Assumption. Maria Valtorta died on October 12, 1961. In 1973 her remains were moved to Florence and entombed in the Capitular Chapel in the Grand Cloister of the Basilica of the Most Holy Annunciation in Florence.

Dal Covolo and A. Serra (edit.) Città Nuova, Rome 2009, has just appeared. It is 1051 pages long and includes 30 contributions from 28 authors. We have every reason to say: “at long last!” This volume has been so long awaited; the second volume will ap- pear within the beginning of 2010 and the third volume in 2011. 1. As I explained in my General Introduction to the three volumes so many Mari- ology scholars and enthusiasts have felt the need for just such a work. The idea of putting it together was born of the experience of our Faculty’s teaching. The Casa Editrice Città Nuova publishing house expressed interest in the project. Or- ganizing the project began in 2000. The “challenge” – and it was a challenge – was placing this project in the context of the general history of the Church and theology at a time when the very idea of “making history” was under discussion. Professor I.M. Calabuig Adán, OSM, the President of the Faculty and someone well known to and respected by our readers guided the project until February 2005. Professor Calabuig’s untimely death and other unforeseen events of the sort that plague collaborative projects slowed the project down and caused temporary set- backs.

The vast majority of Catholics were surprised by the unexpected and unforeseen resig- nation of Benedict XVI as Bishop of Rome. He began that ministry on April 19, 2005, and held the office for seven years, ten months and nine days – up to 8 PM on the even- ing of February 28, 2013. It was at a public Consistory on Monday, February 11, 2013 (the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes) that the Pope resigned and called for the election of a successor.1 He had reached the conclusion that he was not “physically, mentally or spir- itually able to carry out the office that had been entrusted to him.”2 In this complicated moment in the life of the Church and of the world, Benedict XVI had “repeatedly exam- ined his conscience before God (conscientia mea iterum atque iterum coram Deo ex- plorata.” Because of his advanced age and well aware of the gravity of this act, with total liberty (bene conscius ponderis huius actus plena libertate) he renounced the Pe- trine ministry as the successor of Blessed John Paul II (1978-2005).

  • The Definability of the Assumption
    THE DEFINABILITY OF THE ASSUMPTION IN the Encyclical Deiparae Virginis Mariae, dated May 1, 1946, Pope Pius XII announces that over a long period of years the Holy See has received many petitions to define the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin as a dogma of faith. These petitions, he says, were submitted by Cardinals and Patriarchs, by Archbishops and Bishops, by priests, religious, and a host of the laity, most notably of all by nearly two hundred Fathers of the Vatican Council. Since the beginning of his Pontificate, the Holy Father continues, he has been pondering the question whether it be right and fitting and opportune to comply with these petitions by an act of his supreme authority. With this in mind he has been offering up fervent prayers that the divine will may be made known to him. He now turns to the Bishops of the Catholic world with an appeal to assist him in gaining light from heaven. Following the example and the method of his predecessors, especially of Pius IX before he defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception,1 the Pope urgently requests that the Bishops inform him upon two points. First, with what devotion do their flocks honor Mary in the mystery of her Assumption? Secondly (and this is far more important), do the Bishops themselves, in their wise and prudent judgment, think that the Assumption can be defined; and do they, together with their clergy and people, desire the definition? It does not seem rash to regard this act of the Holy Father as the last step before a solemn definition.

  • The Theology of the Doctrine of the Immaculate Heart of Mary
    THE THEOLOGY OF THE DOCTRINE OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY INTRODUCTION THE purpose of this paper is to present some theological aspects of the cult of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The timeliness of the subject can be evaluated in the light of three important facts. (1) The apparitions of Fatima (1917) in which Our Lady requested world wide devotion to her Immaculate Heart. (2) The solemn Act of Consecration of the Church and the whole world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary by Pope Pius XII on October 31, 1942, commemorating the twenty-fifth anniversary of of the apparitions of Fatima. The same year, on December 8, the Sovereign Pontiff publicly renewed the Act of Consecration in the Basilica of St. Peter. (3) The institution of the universal feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary to be celebrated each year on the Octave day of the Assumption, August 22, as a double of the second class. This feast is to be a reminder of the solemn Act of Consecra- tion.     No. 30 (New Series) Spring, 1995 The Rosary Since Vatican II Reports about the rosary's demise are premature. The same shops which a few months ago sold recordings of Gregorian chant from the monks of St. Dominic de Silos now feature cassettes of the pope reciting the rosary. Those unfamiliar with the rosary appear curious; others wonder whether there might be a relation between the rosary and the current interest in spirituality and prayer. Publishing trends frequently indicate religious interests: twice as many books and articles have appeared on the rosary in the last ten years as there were in the previous twenty. Some form of the rosary has been part of Western Catholicism for almost seven hundred years. Pope Leo XIII (1878-1903) wrote thirteen encyclicals on the rosary, and · twentieth-centUry popes have been its most ardent promot­ ers, both in their writings and by their personal example. Perhaps no one has promoted it more than Pope John Paul II. In the 1940s and 1950s, rosary devotions, rallies, and crusades were part of Catholic life.
