Phylogeny of the Cetrarioid Core (Parmeliaceae) Based on Five

SEAWARD Abstract: Fourteen genera belong to a monophyletic core of cetrarioid lichens, Ahtiana, Allocetraria, Arctocetraria, Cetraria, Cetrariella, Cetreliopsis, Flavocetraria, Kaernefeltia, Masonhalea, Nephromopsis, Tuckermanella, Tuckermannopsis, Usnocetraria and Vulpicida. A total of 71 samples representing 65 species (of 90 worldwide) and all type species of the genera are included in phylogentic analyses based on a complete ITS matrix and incomplete sets of group I intron, -tubulin, GAPDH and mtSSU sequences. Eleven of the species included in the study are analysed phylogenetically for the first time, and of the 178 sequences, 67 are newly constructed. Two phylogenetic trees, one based solely on the complete ITS-matrix and a second based on total information, are similar, but not entirely identical. About half of the species are gathered in a strongly supported clade composed of the genera Allocetraria, Cetraria s. str., Cetrariella and Vulpicida. Arctocetraria, Cetreliopsis, Kaernefeltia and Tuckermanella are monophyletic genera, whereas Cetraria, Flavocetraria and Tuckermannopsis are polyphyletic. The taxonomy in current use is compared with the phylogenetic results, and future, probable or potential adjustments to the phylogeny are discussed. The single non-DNA character with a strong correlation to phylogeny based on DNA-sequences is conidial shape. The secondary chemistry of the poorly known species Cetraria annae is analyzed for the first time; the cortex contains usnic acid and atranorin, whereas isonephrosterinic, nephrosterinic, lichesterinic, protolichesterinic and squamatic acids occur in the medulla. -

Fossil Usnea and Similar Fruticose Lichens from Palaeogene Amber

(Parmeliaceae), generally known as beard lichens, are among the most iconic epiphytic lichens in modern forest ecosystems. Many of the c. 350 currently recognized species are widely distributed and have been used as bioin- dicators in air pollution studies. Here we demonstrate that usneoid lichens were present in the Palaeogene amber forests of Europe. Based on general morphology and annular cortical fragmentation, one fossil from Baltic amber can be assigned to the extant genus Usnea. The unique type of cortical cracking indirectly demonstrates the presence of a central cord that keeps the branch intact even when its cortex is split into vertebrae-like segments. This evolutionary innovation has remained unchanged since the Palaeogene, contributing to the considerable ecological flexibility that allows Usnea species to flourish in a wide variety of ecosystems and climate regimes. The fossil sets the minimum age for Usnea to 34 million years (late Eocene). While the other similar fossils from Baltic and Bitterfeld ambers cannot be definitely assigned to the same genus, they underline the diversity of pendant lichens in Palaeogene amber forests. It is a remnant of the Earth’s most recent ice age and dominates the landscape, ecology and geology of Patagonia. Immense glacial systems cut through towering mountains as they move inexorably towards the sea. Take a look at any map of the region and this action becomes immediately apparent, in the maze of fjords and islands that make up one of the planet’s last great remaining wilderness regions. Ancient boreal forests also tell a story of an evolving planet and the supercontinent of Gondwanaland. They are home to several species of flora only found in South America, New Zealand, and Australia’s most southerly state, Tasmania. Commencing in Ushuaia, we make our way north through a vast network of deep fjords and channels, occasionally venturing out to the Pacific Ocean as we navigate towards Valparaiso – Chile’s historic deep-sea port. We explore our surroundings by Zodiac boat, approaching huge glaciers and observing resident and migratory wildlife and birdlife. On shore, we enjoy hikes of varying durations to outstanding viewpoints, in the company of expert guides. In addition, visits to small coastal communities showcase the unique way of life of the hardy local inhabitants – telling a story of both indigenous and European settlement. -

ROUTE OF PARKS OF CHILEAN PATAGONIA The Route of Parks of Chilean Patagonia is one of the last wild places on earth. The Route’s 17 National Parks span the entire south of Chile, from Puerto Montt all the way down to Cape Horn. Aside from offering travelers what is perhaps the world’s most scenic journey, the Route has also helped revitalize more than 60 local communities through conservation-centered tourism. This 1,740-mile Route spans a full third of Chile. Its ecological value is underscored by the number of endemic species and the rich biodiversity of its temperate rainforests, sub-Antarctic climates, wetlands, towering massifs, icefields, and its spectacular fjord system–the largest in the world. The Route’s pristine ecosystems, largely untouched by human intervention, capture three times more carbon per acre than the Amazon. They’re also home to endangered species like the Huemul (South Andean Deer) and Darwin’s Frog. The Route of Parks is born of a vision of conservation that seeks to balance the protection of the natural world with human economic development. This vision emphasizes the importance of conserving and restoring complete ecosystems, which are sources of pride, prosperity, and belonging for the people who live in and near them. It’s a unique opportunity to reverse the extinction crisis and climate chaos currently ravaging our planet–and to provide a hopeful, harmonious model of a different way forward. 1 ALERCE ANDINO National Park This park, declared a National Biosphere Reserve of Temperate Rainforests, features 97,000 acres of evergreen rainforest. -

Mycobiology Research Article Lichen Mycota in South Korea: The Genus Usnea 1 1 1 1 2 1, Udeni Jayalal , Santosh Joshi , Soon-Ok Oh , Young Jin Koh , Florin Criçs an and Jae-Seoun Hur * 1 Korean Lichen Research Institute, Sunchon National University, Suncheon 540-742, Korea 2 Faculty of Biology and Geology, Babeçs -Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, 400015, Romania Abstract Usnea Adans. is a somewhat rare lichen in South Korea, and, in nearly two decades, no detailed taxonomic or revisionary study has been conducted. This study was based on the specimens deposited in the lichen herbarium at the Korean Lichen Research Institute, and the samples were identified using information obtained from recent literature. In this study, a total of eight species of Usnea, including one new record, Usnea hakonensis Asahina, are documented. Detailed descriptions of each species with their morphological, anatomical, and chemical characteristics are provided. A key to all known Usnea species in South Korea is also presented. Ohmura) Parmeliaceae [1] (Lecanorales, Ascomycota), with ca. 300 Articus from the subgenus Usnea. The subgenus Eumitria species, and shows a world-wide distribution [2, 3]. Due to (Stirt.) Zahlbr. and sections Usnea Dill. ex Adans. and a fruticose habit and a beard like appearance, it is easily Ceratinae (Motyka) Y. Ohmura were segregated from the recognized, but difficult to identify up to species level due subgenus Usnea based on the molecular analysis reported to the presence of varying characteristics [4, 5]. -

DESTINATION IB HONEYMOONS CHILE Set among lush green vegetation, the luxury lodge has Queulat National Park views of the fjord and of the Andes and also has thermal waters to relax in, with natural volcanic hot springs trickling down from the hills. With no TVs, Wi-Fi or phone coverage, this is the perfect place to come to completely disconnect from urban life, ease away any post-wedding stresses and soak up the pristine nature of the area. Indoors, the lodge has plenty of cosy areas to relax in and a separate spa area with treatments. All of the rooms have small terraces overlooking the fjord and mountains and the water in the bathroom comes from the thermal springs. Step outdoors and the only background sound is of running water, with hot volcanic water running down to the three outdoor thermal pools. Two of the pools are swimming-pool size with views over the fjord and mountains, and one is a natural rock pool, each a short walk from the lodge along a path lined with lush vegetation and nalca plants (Chilean rhubarb). A memorable adventure Although it’s a remote lodge on the edge of a fjord, Puyuhuapi is in Queulat National Park and is the ideal base for honeymoon adventures – take one of the beautiful hikes along the park’s trails, go sea kayaking from the lodge’s jetty or arrange a boat trip along the fjord. One of the most memorable sights from your trip will be of the hanging glacier, known as the Ventisquero Colgante, where you can take a guided hike.
