Dr. Sugan Baranth President, Nai Talim Samiti, Sevagram,Wardha, Maharastra. “Nai Talim and Acharya Kripalani” ABOUT THE SEMINAR Jivatram Bhagwandas Kripalani (1888-1982) has left a distinct mark on Indian politics in pre- as well as post- Independence India. Due to his involvement with nationalist politics in students days, he had to live studies at Wilson College,Bombay and D.J.Sindh College,Karachi. Finally he completed B.A. from Fergusson College, Pune and M.A. in History from Bombay University. He taught at a college in Muzaffarpur in Bihar from 1912 to 1917 and at Benares during 1919-20. He also served as the Principal of the Gujarat Vidyapith, founded by Mahatma Gandhi, for five years, till 1927. It was here that he was called Acharya. Meeting Gandhi was a turning point in his life. In March 1915, it was at Shantiniketan that Kripalani first met Gandhi. There was no immediate sparks between them. However, after meeting Gandhi later in 1917 during the Champaran satyagraha, he was attracted to Gandhi's ideas and work and got completely involved in the nationalist movement led by Gandhi. In his own words he was a 'humble interpreter' of Gandhi's thoughts 'to others in more modern and understandable terms'. Kripalani married to Sucheta Mazumdar in April 1936. Gandhi did not give his blessings but said that he would 'pray' for them. Later Sucheta became very close to Gandhi. 2 Kripalai was the General Secretary of the congress from 1934 to 1945. He was elected President of the Indian National Congress in November 1946. He resigned soon thereafter due to ideological differences with his colleagues. He also resigned from the Congress Party in 1951 and begun a new political party, the Kisan Mazdoor Praja Party, which subsequently merged with the Socialist Party to become the Praja Socialist Party. He was a strong critic of the emergency imposed during Indira Gandhi's tenure as the Prime Minister. He, with Jayprakash Narayan, helped in the formation of Janta Party and led it to victory in 1977. He has written some thought-provoking books on Gandhian philosophy such as Gandhi : His Life and Thoughts, The Gandhian Way and Gandhi: the Statesman that display his original approach and high intellectual quality. In 1950 he started a weekly named vigil to create awareness about the economic and social issues and Gandhi's ideas, but it had to be folded up after ten years for wants of funds. Kripalani's commitments to social and economic regeneration of India, his uncompromising stand on moral and ethical principles, his deep concern for the poor and unemployed and his insistence on high values in public life coupled with his irrepressible wit, razor-sharp mind matched only by equally sharp expressions put up him in a class by itself. Thus he was Gandhi's colleagues, a participant as well as analyst of the freedom struggle, an independent thinker and writer with an incisive mind, and was an important figure in public life who set high moral standards for democratic opposition. Acharya Kripalani was Acharya with the Gujarat Vidyapith during 1923-29 and the country has almost forgotten this great political activist, an excellent exponent of Gandhian Thought and a practitioner. Gujarat Vidyapith wants to pay a tribute to this grand leader by organizing a two day National Seminar. The topic of the seminar is “Acharya J. B. Kripalani : Person and Politics”. 3 THEMES OF THE SEMINAR • Kripalani's contribution to political thought and action. • Kripalani and his role in promoting Constructive Programme especially Khadi. • Kripalani in post Independent India : as Congress President, unique Parliamentarian and leader of opposition, and his role in public life. • Kripalani's Gandhi and Gandhi's Kripalani. • Other relevant themes from social, economic & political perspectives. CALL FOR PAPERS Original papers for presentation are invited in the English, Hindi and Gujarati language on the themes of seminar from the academicians, research scholars, students, social workers etc. SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACT & FULL PAPERS The abstract for the presentation should be approximately 300 words including the title, author (s) name, designation, institute address, E-mail id, phone no. and minimum 3 keywords. His writings are read and pondered over by millions of people… Much importance is attached to his writings because Thoreau himself was a man who practised what he preached. Impelled by a sense of duty, he wrote much against his own country, America. He considered it a great sin that the Americans held many persons in the bond of slavery.     Announcing International Course On Gandhian Nonviolence: Theory and Application th 2020-2021 (9 batch) Part A: Rationale of the Programme As the title suggests, the overall purpose of the course is to give its seekers orientation in the theoretical and practical dimensions of Nonviolence as explained and applied by Mahatma Gandhi in his personal and public life. However, the course content will not be limited to the Gandhian framework only; the examples and interpretations of other practitioners of nonviolence will also be relied upon. We know that the contemporary world is in turmoil. The chief characteristic of the contemporary world is violence; escalating and intensifying violence has become the key defining feature in public life and discourse. Terrorism and war on terrorism mark the worst manifestations of violence and has created a new discourse. Some of the sensitive people in the west even ask: Are we facing End –Time? The more pertinent question, of course, is how we address and get out of the vicious circle of violence. It is here that Gandhi steps in with his message of all-embracing nonviolence or ahimsa. It is well known that there is a growing interest world-wide, particularly in the west, on Gandhi and his theory and practice of nonviolence. Peace activists are trying to understand Gandhian nonviolence in order to equip themselves better in their struggle for peace and justice. Many of them have expressed their desire to get a formal training in Gandhian nonviolence in India which would expose them not only to the life, philosophy and method of Gandhi but also to Indian social life and culture.

    CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Nonviolence is the pillar of Gandhi‘s life and work. His concept of nonviolence was based on cultivating a particular philosophical outlook and was integrally associated with truth. For him, nonviolence not just meant refraining from physical violence interpersonally and nationally but refraining from the inner violence of the heart as well. It meant the practice of active love towards one‘s oppressor and enemies in the pursuit of justice, truth and peace; ―Nonviolence cannot be preached‖ he insisted, ―It has to be practiced.‖ (Dear John, 2004). Non Violence is mightier than violence. Gandhi had studied very well the basic nature of man. To him, "Man as animal is violent, but in spirit he is non-violent.‖ The moment he awakes to the spirit within, he cannot remain violent". Thus, violence is artificial to him whereas non-violence has always an edge over violence. (Gandhi, M.K., 1935). Mahatma Gandhi‘s nonviolent struggle which helped in attaining independence is the biggest example. Ahimsa (nonviolence) has been part of Indian religious tradition for centuries. According to Mahatma Gandhi the concept of nonviolence has two dimensions i.e. nonviolence in action and nonviolence in thought. It is not a negative virtue rather it is positive state of love. The underlying principle of non- violence is "hate the sin, but not the sinner." Gandhi believes that man is a part of God, and the same divine spark resides in all men. Since the same spirit resides in all men, the possibility of reforming the meanest of men cannot be ruled out.

MOHANDAS KARAMCHAND GANDHI (1869–1948) Krishna Kumar Rejection of the colonial education system, which the British administration had established in the early nineteenth century in India, was an important feature of the intellectual ferment generated by the struggle for freedom. Many eminent Indians, political leaders, social reformers and writers voiced this rejection. But no one rejected colonial education as sharply and as completely as Gandhi did, nor did anyone else put forward an alternative as radical as the one he proposed. Gandhi’s critique of colonial education was part of his overall critique of Western civilization. Colonization, including its educational agenda, was to Gandhi a negation of truth and non-violence, the two values he held uppermost. The fact that Westerners had spent ‘all their energy, industry, and enterprise in plundering and destroying other races’ was evidence enough for Gandhi that Western civilization was in a ‘sorry mess’.1 Therefore, he thought, it could not possibly be a symbol of ‘progress’, or something worth imitating or transplanting in India. It would be wrong to interpret Gandhi’s response to colonial education as some kind of xenophobia. It would be equally wrong to see it as a symptom of a subtle revivalist dogma. If it were possible to read Gandhi’s ‘basic education’ plan as an anonymous text in the history of world education, it would be conveniently classified in the tradition of Western radical humanists like Pestalozzi, Owen, Tolstoy and Dewey.

Gandhi ji was invited by Rajkumar Shukla to look into the problems of the indigo planters of Champaran in Bihar. The Europeans forced peasants to grow indigo instead of food crops on 3/20 of their land under the Tinkathia System. The Peasants were left helpless as The peasants were forced to sell The price was calculated on the produce at prices fixed by the the basis of cultivated area Europeans that was too less.
