Reviews Girl Kandeyce Jorden (dir.) USA: Current Mood Productions, 2018. <https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2624640/> <http://dx.doi.org/10.12801/1947-5403.2018.10.01.05> Maren Hancock York University (Toronto) Most films depicting DJs and their attendant culture—whether documentary or drama— feature predominantly masculine points of view. Girl, a full-length documentary focused on legendary hard house/trance DJ Sandra Collins as well as six other women-identified DJs, offers a unique collection of feminine voices and experiences, making it an important contribution to the history of EDM and the study of DJ culture. Part wish-fulfillment, part confessional, part documentary and part cautionary tale of the push and pull of excessive partying of touring life, Girl covers a lot of ground. Filmmaker, visual artist and actor Kandeyce Jorden notes that it was an enthusiasm for dance music and culture that inspired her to direct this film. Early in the film’s narrative, Jorden states that were she not a filmmaker, she “would secretly want to be a DJ”. Later in the film she expresses a yearning for Collins’ seemingly carefree life as a DJ: “she never made lists, she never returned phone calls … being in the moment … was starting to feel like a drug”. It is no surprise then that, alongside Collin’s narratives, there is a prominent foregrounding of the director herself and the resultant changes to her life experience in the wake of touring with Collins. With regards to structure, the film breaks down into two sections. The front matter outlines Jorden’s background: Jorden narrates via voiceover, first introducing herself before describing her relationship with her film director partner and their success collaborating on a short film together.

2/18/2016 DJ Sandra Collins – Tranceport 3 » Synthtopia Get The Latest 2016 NAMM News About Synthtopia Submit Items for Review Feedback Form Advertise On Synthtopia DJ Sandra Collins – Tranceport 3 Posted on April 17, 2004 by synthhead DJ Sandra Collins handles the mixing duties on the third incarnation of the excellent Tranceport series. Previous disks, mixed by Paul Oakenfold and DJ Dave Ralph, effectively established the Tranceport identity – interesting trance mixes for dancing or listening. Collins delivers another winner with this smooth collection of trance and techno sounds. Tranceport 3 is a collection of melodic and progressive trance cuts that are swirled into a liquid blend to create a sum larger than the parts. The CD is fast paced, with Collins elegantly controlling the epic rise and fall of the mix. Collins proves herself to be one of the hottest dj’s working. The CD starts off very slowly, with an almost ambient Intro. This transitions with subtlety into Liquid Sun, a minimal trance piece that reminded me a little of Tangerine Dream’s soundtrack work for Risky Business. This track is the longest of the bunch, clocking in at over 12 minutes, but Collins uses this to slowly draw you into the trance music. Collins then masterfully blends shorter tracks into a continuous trance experience, ending with two stunning tracks, C’Est Muzique, and Rank 1’s Airwave. While these two tracks have certainly worn out a few grooves, it’s not without cause. Collins uses these tracks to bring Tranceport 3 to multiple climactic peaks, leaving behind the colder trance sounds for some brazenly emotional ones.

Rave culture is a strikingly significant, subversive subculture of recent and current times. Unique to the subculture are: rave music, rave dance, rave fashion, as well as specific tools and machines (i.e. technology used), behaviors, rituals, mind-altering drugs, jargon, and above all, the ecstatic community events that are raves. A subculture must provide for its participants something that may well be unavailable to them from the dominant culture. This starts with a sense of belonging to a "group" that appeals to them rationally and aesthetically. Rave in particular provides inclusion in an international community, as well as senses of festivity, intensity, emotional release, and collective experience; these in turn invoke alternative ideas/modes of thought and behavior/ways of living.
