221. DRESS AND GROOMING

1. Purpose It is the opinion of the Board, student body, administration, and parents that SC 1317.3 Carlynton School District students wish to present an appearance and mode of Title 22 behavior which can be pointed to with pride by anyone within the school Sec. 12.11 community. While we accept changes in and recognize certain situations require appropriate modes of dress, we counsel moderation. Please use good judgment when choosing clothes to be worn at school. So as to avoid the loss of valuable class time, students are counseled to avoid which is distracting in nature.

2. Authority Students may be required to wear certain types of clothing while participating in Title 22 physical education classes, shops, extracurricular activities, or other situations where Sec. 12.11 special attire may be required to ensure the health or safety of the student.

3. Delegation of The Board authorizes the Superintendent to enforce school regulations prohibiting Responsibility student dress or grooming practices which:

1. Present a hazard to the health or safety of the student him/herself or to others in the school.

2. Materially interfere with school work, create disorder, or disrupt the educational program.

3. Cause excessive wear or damage to school property.

4. Prevent the student from achieving his/her own educational objectives because of blocked vision or restricted movement.

The Superintendent shall develop procedures to implement this policy which:

Pol. 325, 425, 525 2. Instruct staff members to demonstrate by example and precept wholesome attitudes toward neatness, cleanliness, propriety, modesty, and good sense in attire and appearance.

Title 22 3. Ensure that all rules implementing this policy impose only minimum necessary Sec. 12.11 restrictions on the exercise of the student's taste and individuality.

4. Guidelines It is recognized that inappropriate clothing is considered distracting to the orderly process of education. So as to prevent the loss of valuable class time, students should avoid clothing which is considered distracting to the orderly process of education. By following these guidelines, students will help promote pride in them and in their school.

The school district considers the following to be inappropriate to the educational process and will NOT be tolerated:

Title 22 1. Students may not wear clothing which reveals a significant amount of skin, Sec. 12.11 including but not limited to: backless tops, tops which do not significantly cover midriffs and/or both shoulders, short-, short , skirts with high slits, low cut that reveal cleavage or a significant portion of the upper chest. As a guide for determining an allowable length for a or shorts, the garment should be no shorter than halfway between the of the thigh and bottom of the knee.

2. Students may not wear clothing that reveals (or a lack thereof), including boxer shorts or underwear. This also includes excessively sagging pants which reveal undergarments. Pants will be worn so that they are secured on the or upper hips.

3. Students may not wear sheer clothing that reveal undergarments (or the lack thereof).

4. Students may not wear clothing that advocates or conveys alcohol or drug advertisement or usage, anything of a derogatory nature about any group of people, clothing with sexual innuendoes or blatant sexual messages, and clothing with inappropriate language or perceived as threatening. This includes the words bar, lounge and/or tavern.

5. Students may not wear any article of clothing that is deemed by the administration to be gang related.

6. Articles that could cause harm to another or damage to property may not be worn in school. Examples of such articles include but are not limited to: chains, locks, items with metal spikes, and safety pins. These items could be construed as weapons.

7. Students must wear in school per the Western Pennsylvania Safety Council.

8. Students are required to remove all head wear, including but not limited to: , bandanas, hoods on , any head covering used for fashion, and upon entering the building. Exceptions will be made for religious head covering upon approval of the administration.

9. / or form fitting bottoms worn as pants are only permissible under appropriate length skirts or shorts.

Students who wear inappropriate clothing to school will be dealt with on an individual basis. The building principal, whose decision will be final, will determine whether attire is or is not within these guidelines. Parents/Guardians are an important part of a child's education and thus parents/guardians should ensure that their child is dressed appropriately. Reasonable accommodations may be made for religious or medical reasons or special days such as spirit or field days, with administrative approval. Students not abiding by the will be asked to change clothing. If this is not possible in school, parents/guardians will be notified and students will be sent home to change clothes via parent/guardian provided transportation.

It is recognized that some may not fall within these guidelines, yet dress and team jogging that are approved by the school administration to promote school spirit on game day are acceptable.
