3 Letter from the President

As last year began and COVID-19 started to spread across our country, it became clear that our plans for the commemorative year of 2020 would need to change. We realized early on that, in addition to cancelling our Provincetown 400 plans, there would be so much we would not be able to do. Yet, as the year progressed, in large part due to our dedicated Team and supported Membership, we managed to do so much.

We revamped our campus and operations so we could open our doors and educate our visitors while keeping them safe. We continued to expand our reach and reinforce our Mission. We created new ways to connect and promote our ideals of acceptance, diversity and freedom.

As 2020 threw curveballs, we found unexpected ways to step up and step into our Mission. No matter how many ways we had to adapt and pivot, we heard a resounding “We’ve got this” from our Team and our Membership. Because of all of you, we were able to shine in 2020, despite the darkness. We thank you for this.

As we march into 2021, we remain committed to showcasing our beloved town as a refuge of free thought and a historic place of welcome. The Pilgrims were the first pilgrims to arrive on our shores, but since those first pilgrims arrived, many more have followed. As an organization, we will continue to tell the stories of all these pilgrims and ensure our Museum portrays a more accurate, chronological and relevant story about Provincetown’s history and its impact on the Nation’s history. Case by case, exhibit by exhibit, wing by wing. We will get it right. We hope you continue to support this very important work.

Courtney Hurst President Pilgrim Memorial Association

4 Our Purpose and Mission The Cape Cod Pilgrim Memorial Association (the “Association”) is a private non-profit, educational organization whose mission is to maintain the and Provincetown Museum buildings and land (the “PMPM”) to accommodate its libraries and collections. The Association’s mission is also to commemorate the history of the Mayflower Pilgrims, culminating in their arrival and stay in and the signing of the .

The Association’s mission further includes the collection, preservation, research, exhibition and publication of archival materials on all aspects of Provincetown history, including the contributions of the Wampanoag and other indigenous peoples whose presence in the region predates the arrival of the Mayflower, the rise of the whaling industry, the advent of the Portuguese fishing community, and the evolution of Provincetown as a center of tolerance, art, and theater in the 20th Century, including the important role of the LGBT community in that evolution.

The Association shall be operated exclusively for charitable and educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954, as from time to time amended, and within the meaning of General Law, Ch. 180 sec 4, as amended.

Ratified by the membership of the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum on 01 December 2018. Acknowledgement of the Wampanoag People We acknowledge the Wampanoag people of the past and of the present, who are among us, and their heritage as the indigenous people of this land.

While we cannot undo the mistakes of the past, we have a responsibility to acknowledge them and work toward a continually better future.

5 Letter from the Executive Director When I reflect on the Pilgrim Monument this year, I am humbled, by that first encounter on Provincetown’s shores 400 years ago. No matter what side of history one stood on, the only certainty for everyone involved was an uncertain future.

Earlier this year, we watched cultural institutions and non-profits around the world risk closing their doors permanently due to the COVID-19 pandemic and faced our own version of an uncertain future. We made and re-made plans to preserve our beloved institution. Difficult decisions were made and thankfully, we were able to open our doors despite the pandemic. As the Pilgrim Monument stands tall, I want to thank each of you for standing tall with us this year.

As members, your support helps ensure a brighter future for the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum. Here are a few ways in which our community showed its incredible support for our mission and commitment to truth and accuracy:

Stood on the right side of retelling our history: Our new permanent exhibit, Our Story: The Complicated Relationship of the Indigenous Wampanoag and the Mayflower Pilgrims, debuted to overwhelming response and applause. Guests, visitors, and the media booked appointments to experience the truth of Our Story. If you have not yet visited, I invite you to during our 2021 season.

• Raised more than $25,000 during our first virtual gala and live auction:We turned lemons into lemonade and found a way to reach our audience through a fun, educational, and virtual experience that commemorated the 400th anniversary. • Continued the legacy of those who came before us: We broke ground and are on target to unveil our new inclined elevator in Spring, 2021. This “new front door” will provide a link between the Monument and Provincetown’s economic center. It is also among the many first steps we are taking to grow and transform PMPM from a community museum into a world-class destination of welcome, learning, and truth. The inclined elevator will help us place PMPM in the international spotlight and will give us the opportunity to share our mission with a larger audience.

Pandemic, or not – PMPM will keep doing the critical work of advancing our institution and protecting its values of tolerance, acceptance, and inclusion.

K. David Weidner, Ph.D. Executive Director Cape Cod Pilgrim Memorial Association

6 Key Moments from 2019-2020

A Look Back at 2020…

Bradford Access Project During mid-spring, we watched a more than 100-year-old vision become a reality. Construction crews broke ground on High Pole Hill and the inclined elevator that will extend PMPM’s front down to Bradford Street and Provincetown Center, began to take shape.

The inclined elevator made tremendous progress in 2020 and is scheduled for completion in May of 2021.

Our New Permanent Exhibit A highlight of the year was the debut of our new exhibit – Our Story: The Complicated Relationship of the Indigenous Wampanoag and the Mayflower Pilgrims.

Curated by Steven Peters of the Wampanoag creative agency, SmokeSygnals, Our Story is the first permanent exhibit in the world to tell the story of the Wampanoag Nation’s history on Cape Cod, from the perspective of the Wampanoag.

Our Story has been featured or mentioned in articles from our local Provincetown Banner, Provincetown Independent and Provincetown Magazine, to the Globe, USA Today, TIME and Smithsonian.

PAAM-PMPM Juried Art Exhibition In honor of Provincetown 400, the Provincetown Art Association & Museum (PAAM) and PMPM partnered to mount an art exhibition that explored the themes connected to the quadricentennial commemoration: liberty, justice and freedom of expression.

The Juried Art exhibition, produced with our friends at PAAM began in September and will continue to be on display during 2021 so that visitors can enjoy the talents of our local artists.

9 P400 Virtual Gala and Live Auction In response to having to cancel all events in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum hosted its first virtual gala and live auction.

The evening featured remarks from President Courtney Hurst and Executive Director K. David Weidner, performances by Zoë Lewis and the Wampanoag Nation Singers and Dancers, as well as a virtual tour of PMPM’s new Wampanoag Exhibit narrated by Steven Peters of SmokeSygnals. The evening wrapped with an exciting live auction of artwork and local experiences.

With support coming from the community and friends from around the world, the gala raised over $25,000 for PMPM’s general operating fund.

Significant Monument Lightings Throughout the year, the Pilgrim Monument showed its support for causes like World Autism Month in April (blue lights); honoring front line healthcare workers and first responders during the COVID-19 pandemic from May through today (red and blue); and George Floyd’s death for nine nights in June (lights turned out).

Chamber Music for the Outer Cape Our 2020 program began in February with the continuation of our popular Chamber Music for the Outer Cape concerts and the ‘American Voices’ series.

Led by our Artistic Director, Craig Combs, DMA., the ‘America Sings’ program delighted attendees with music from the Outer Cape Chorale Chamber Singers; baritone John Whittlesey; and sopranos, Alisa Jordheim and Halcyone Hurst.

The Chamber Music for the Outer Cape program stayed healthy this past year, producing virtual concerts in August and December.
