Saint Rose of Lima We celebrate her feast on August 19th. It was one of the more moving experiences of my life to be able to go to Lima and visit the church of Santo Domingo (St Dominic). My mother had spent time in the convent as a Dominican and then was a lay Dominican for the rest of her life after leaving the convent. Lay Dominicans are men and women, singles and couples living a Christian life with a Dominican spirituality in the secular world. They find inspiration following the same spiritual path taken by many saints, blesseds, and other holy men and women throughout the 800-year history of the Dominican Order. The Life of a Dominican layperson is all about having a passion for the Word of God. It is about committing one self to a community of like minded brothers and sisters that immerse themselves in the Word of God. So as a child I grew up on the stories of St. Rose of Lima, St. Martin De Porres and St. John Macias of how they cared for the poor, the slaves and those in need in Lima. All three of them are remembered in the church of Santo Domingo in Lima. It was interesting that the feast of St Rose came when I was in Peru and it is a national holiday there where the country takes a day off and remembers her charity. The Saints call us to look outside of ourselves and our local needs to a broader spectrum of the world and our society. We look at what happened in Beirut and remember to pray for them. We look at those in our world still caught in poverty and poor living conditions and we discern how to use what we have for the good of others. We continue to pray for our children and the start of our school year. Through the examples of the Saints and the grace of God may we grow in faith and charity. He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Blessings! Christ, the Son of the living God.” - Mt 16:15- 16 frjoe Excerpts from the LectionaryFr.
