    Mendicant Orders of the Middle Ages The Monks and Monasteries of the early Middle Ages played a critical roal in the preservation and promotion of Christian culture. The accomplishments of the monks, especially during the 'Dark Ages', are too numerous to list. They were the both missionaries and custodians of Catholic culture for generations, and the monastic reforms of the tenth century paved the way for the reforms of the secular clergy that followed. By the beginning of the 13th century, however, there was seen a need for a new type of religious community, and thus were born the Mendicant Orders. The word 'Mendicant' means beggar, and this was due to the fact that the Mendicant Friars, in contrast to the Benedictine Monks, lived primarily in towns, rather than on propertied estates. Since they did not own property, they were not beholden to secular rulers and were free to serve the poor, preach the gospel, and uphold Christian ideals without compromise. The Investiture Controversy of the previous century, and the underlying problems of having prelates appointed by and loyal to local princes, was one of the reasons for the formation of mendicant orders. Even though monks took a vow of personal poverty, they were frequently members of wealthy monasteries, which were alway prone to corruption and politics. The mendicant commitment to poverty, therefore, prohibited the holding of income producing property by the orders, as well as individuals. The poverty of the mendicant orders gave them great freedom, in the selection of their leaders, in the their mobility, and in their active pursuits.

    BIOGRAPHY OF ST. ROSE OF LIMA Isabella Flores (y de Olivia) was the daughter of Maria & Gaspar Flores y de Olivia born on April 20, 1586 and died at the age of 31 on August 24, 1617. Her father was a Spanish (heavily armed) cavalryman from Puerto Rico. Her mother was from Lima. She received the Sacrament of Confirmation in 1597 at the age 11 by the Archbishop of Lima, Peru – Archbishop Turibius Mongrovejo who was later declared a saint in 1679. She was friends with St. Martin de Porres and St. John Macias. At her Confirmation she took the name Rose (Rosa in Spanish) based on a story that as a baby someone had seen her face transformed into a rose. St. Rose never imagined in her 31 years of life (Born on April 20, 1586. She died on August 24, 1617) that one day she would be the first canonized saint born in the Americas. She was a contemporary of other great South Americans – St. Anthony de Porres and St. John Macias. She never thought that there would be counties, cities, churches/parishes named for her all over the world. It would have never occurred to her that one day there would be holy cards, stained glass windows, mosaics, paintings, special prayers, novenas and that there would be information about her on the internet. In fact, everything we know about St. Rose’s life – her extreme and often excessive humility which compelled her to draw attention away from herself - tells us that she would have personally not wanted all the attention that we as a church give her.

In this year that marks the eight hundredth anniversary of Saint Dominic’s death, I gladly join the Friars Preachers in giving thanks for the spiritual fruitfulness of that charism and mission, seen in the rich variety of the Dominican family as it has grown over the centuries. My prayerful greetings and good wishes go to all the members of that great family, which embraces the contemplative lives and apostolic works of its nuns and religious sisters, its priestly and lay fraternities, its secular institutes and its youth movements. In the Apostolic Exhortation Gaudete et Exsultate I expressed my conviction that “each saint is a mission, planned by the Father to reflect and embody, at a specific moment in history, a certain aspect of the Gospel” (No. 19).     Rose of Lima Saint Rose of Lima, T.O.S.D. (April 20, 1586 – August 24, 1617), was a Spanish colonist in Lima, Peru, who became known for both her life of severe asceticism and her care of the needy of the city through her own private efforts. A lay member of the Dominican Order, she was the first person born in the Americas to be canonized by the Catholic Church. As a saint, Rose of Lima is designated as a co-patroness of the Philippines along with Saint Pudentiana, who were both moved as second-class patronage in September 1942 by Pope Pius XII, but remains the primary patroness of Peru and the indigenous natives of Latin America. 1 Biography She was born Isabel Flores y de Oliva in the city of Lima, then in the Viceroyalty of Peru, on April 20, 1586. Addressing 1,000 delegates to the Third World Congress of the College of Psychosomatic Medicine Sept. 18, the Pope said: "Concerning the value of each human person, we wish to remind you that it is the physician's duty to be always at the service of life, and to assist the individual to the very end, without ever accepting euthanasia or renouncing the very human duty to help a person to end his days with dignity." SPEAKING in French to delegates from more than 50 countries of five continents, Pope Paul recalled the teaching of Pope Pius XII on the use of pain-killing drugs. Pope Pius XII, the present Pope noted, said in 1958 that such drugs could be used prudently by competent people, "but never so as to diminish personal respon- sibility or against the rights that are proper to a human person." Pope Paul commended the perspective of psychosomatic medicine, which sees the doctor-patient relationship as one between two human beings, in which the patient loses none of his human value because of his condition (Psychosomatic medicine deals with psychological causes of physical symptoms). NOTING the importance of family support for those afflicted with psychosomatic ills, the Pope called upon the delegates to stress the role of the family for the physical and moral well being of individuals.
