Los Zetas’ idiosyncratic interventions include their diversification of criminal operations, professionalization of TCO security, sophisticated use of media and technology, extreme forms of violent coercion, and decentralized command structure. This project aims to complicate the narrative that Los Zetas emerged because of top leaders’ sadistic tendencies or due to an inherently violent culture in Mexico by reframing the group’s evolution within historical processes. Moving beyond Los Zetas, this project examines how persons affected by Los Zetas’ indiscriminate use of violence are forces of activism and social change, connecting opposition culture in Mexico to criminal impunity and resistance movements in Guerrero. Examining Los Zetas in connection with Cold War militarization in Latin America, processes of democratization in Mexico, and the neoliberal order, this analysis views Los Zetas as products and agents of structural inequities, destroying spaces of community cohesion to create spaces of elite economic growth. -

First, it is crafted to acquaint you with some of the perennial and pressing questions of international politics and provoke you to think about them. Second, it is constructed to familiarize you with a host of analytical concepts and several different theoretical approaches that inform the structure of different answers to these prominent questions. Third, this course seeks to help you apply these theoretical perspectives to some of the urgent substantive issues of international relations. Analyzing key issues of international relations from a variety of theoretical perspectives highlights the insights each conceptual prism contributes to our understanding, reveals how different scholars of international politics have approached crucial questions of the discipline, and deepens our appreciation for the substance of international relations. Fourth, this course is designed to improve your analytical and critical thinking abilities by requiring you to evaluate the theoretical conclusions of selected scholars. Sessions of this course are finally designed to prompt all class participants to rethink the utility of these various theoretical approaches in light of both the changing contemporary international environment and perspectives heretofore underemphasized in contemporary international relations thinking. -

It explains Haitian resistance to such forms, and argues that only a development form endogenous to the Haitian majority will bring development and long-term stability to the country. My initial interest in Haiti sparked while reading Eldwidge Danticatt’s Breath, Eyes, Memory, for an interdisciplinary honors course on Latin America. -

None of these countries has offered appropriate protection.1 There may be many reasons for this failure, but to some degree it is predicated on an assumption, either explicit or implied, that the Haitians are predominantly economic migrants without valid claims for protection. This U.S. Committee for Refugees report collects detailed information about human rights conditions in Haiti. It sheds light on possible reasons for departure that may be relevant to claims for protection and asylum. Summary Last year was a tumultuous one for Haiti. The country continued its downward spiral of political devolution since the Multi-National Forces restored the democratically elected president Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 1994. Human rights violations were pervasive, including more than 150 political murders, suspicious disappearances or deaths, and quasi political gangland slayings – a tally comparable to all but the worst periods of the 1991-94 coup regime. -

El boxeador: genealogía y transformación de un ícono en la literatura mexicana de los siglos XX y XXI (The Boxer: Genealogy and Transformation of an Icon in Mexican Literature from the 20th and 21st Centuries) By Luis Miguel Estrada Orozco Master in Mexican Literature A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures Committee Chair: Dr Patricia Valladares-Ruiz. ©2017 ABSTRACT In this research I analyse a corpus of three short stories, one chronicle, and four novels by Mexican authors that use boxers as main characters. The chronicle is “Las glorias del gran Púas”, by Ricardo Garibay (1978). The short stories are “Fuera del ring”, by Guillermo Samperio (1975); “El Rayo Macoy”, by Rafael Ramírez Heredia (1985); and “Campeón ligero”, by Juan Villoro (1999). The novels are Con la muerte en los puños, by Pedro Ángel Palou (2003); Las paredes desnudas, by Imanol Caneyada (2011); Juan Tres Dieciséis, by Hilario Peña (2014); and Artillería nocaut, by Víctor Solorio (2014). I approach this texts from an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing from journalism, sociology, film studies, and history of sports focused on the inclusion of ethnic minorities. My intentions are to examine the icon of the Mexican boxer in pop culture and to explore the evolution of its portrayals in Mexican literature, by reviewing paradigmatic representations in cinema and press that preceded the literature around boxing. These paradigmatic portrayals include those created from the Mexican nationalist point of view of Mexican Golden Age Cinema. -

ENTRE MONSTRUOS, LEYENDAS ANCESTRALES Y LUCHADORES POPULARES: LA INSERCIÓN DEL SANTO EN EL CINE FANTÁSTICO MEXICANO Among monsters, ancestral legends and popular wrestlers: the insertion of Santo in the fantastic Mexican cinema SILVANA FLORESa Universidad de Buenos Aires/CONICET DOI: 10.15366/secuencias2018.48.001 RESUMEN Entre los años cincuenta y setenta, el cese del auge del período de expansión industrial de la cinemato- grafía mexicana y de su liderazgo en los mercados regionales trajo nuevos desafíos a los productores, que tuvieron que luchar contra las nuevas estructuras industriales y la competencia resultante de la emergen- te televisión sumado a los cambios socioculturales que en esos años empezaron a manifestarse en el arte y en la sociedad en general. De ese modo, surgieron nuevos tópicos de interés para el gran público, entre los que se incluyen films que dan cuenta de las nuevas costumbres de la juventud, la inserción de nuevos ritmos musicales vinculados al rock y propuestas volcadas a un erotismo más explícito. A través de este artículo, analizaremos una estrategia que también ha sido empleada en pos de esos fines: la producción de películas en las que se mixturaron espectáculos populares, como la lucha libre, con las tradiciones mí- ticas y ancestrales, tanto nacionales (el mito de «La llorona» o de «La momia azteca») como universales (remitiéndose a las leyendas de Drácula, Frankenstein y el hombre lobo, entre otras). Haremos un recorte focalizándonos en las películas producidas por la firma Cinematográfica Calderón, protagonizadas en gran parte por Santo, el enmascarado de plata, ubicándolas en el contexto del cine fantástico y de terror de la región, considerando su elaboración de la figura del luchador como representante de la justicia y su imbricación con los mitos ancestrales del folclore nacional y universal.
