HE Tuya-Teslin Area, 1,600 square miles in extent, is situated in the Stikine and Atlin Wining Divisions of Northern British Columbia, partly within the western margin of the Cassiar-Omineca Mountains. Although the area is accessible by several routes of travel it is, nevertheless, remoteaid transportation costs, at present, are very high.Because of the cold climateand the presence of snow in all but the summer months, prospecting can he carried on satisfactorily for only about four months of the year. A large part of the region rises above timber-line, which lies at about 4,500 feet above sea-level. About one-quarter of the area is occupied by a gently rolling upland known as the Xawdy Plateau. The Tuya Range, a north-westerly-trending belt of mountains in the eastern part of the area, contains several rugged peaks over 6,500 feet in altitude. The north-westerly-trending Atsutla Range, lying in the western half of the region, contains sharp peaks up to 6,500 feet in height in its central and north-eastezn parts and lower mountains with flat-topped summits in its south-western part. Large north- westerly-trending valleys or trenches characterized by broad, flat, drift-covered Boors .and by straight steep walls lie to the east of the Tuya Range, between the Tuya and Atsutla Ranges, and to the west of the Atsutla Range. In the Tuya Range the Oblique Creek formation, consisting of gneisses, quartzite, schists, crystalline limestone, and volcanics, of undetermined age, has been intruded by two separate granitic batholiths and 'numerous small intrusives of granite, basalt, and highlyaltered ultramafic rocks. In the western part of thearea the bedded rocks comprisePermian quartzite, argillite, chert, volcanics, andlimestone mapped as the Kedahdaand Teslin formations and Lower Mesozoic volcanicconglomerate, arkose, argillite, tuff, limestone, and volcanics mapped as the Nazcha and Shonektaw forma- tions. In the Atsutla Range some of these rocks have been intruded by two granitic batholithsand by many smaller bodies of granitic rocks, diorite,gabbro, rhyolite, basalt, and serpentine. Generally, the structural features of the Palaeozoic and Meso- zioc rocks trend north-westerly and dip at moderate to steep angles. In many places in the area theseolder rocks are overlainunconformably by late Tertiary (?) and Pleistocene lava, tuff, and agglomerate of the Tuya formation. During the Pleistocene an ice-sheet moved westerly and south-westerly across the area,hut it didnot greatly modify the land forms. About one-half of the area is covered withglacial drift and alluvium, which are generallythick and widespread below an elevation of 4,500 feet. TheTuya-Teslin Area is virtuallyunprospected for lode deposits.The thick mantle of drift and alluvium and the extensive areas of volcanicrocks of the Tuya formationunfortunately eliminate a largeproportion of thearea for prospecting. Parts of the remainder, however, aregeologically favourable for the occurrenceof lode depositsand indications of copper, gold, silver,iron, lead, zinc, tungsten,and tin mineralizationhave been found.In the north-eastern part of theTuya Range some ' . of the limestones overlying the flat upper surface of the Parallel Creek batholith have been altered to skarns and, inplaces, mineralized with tungsten, tin, lead,zinc, and iron. Parts of the Tuya-Teslin Area have been prospected without success for shallow deposits of placer gold, but little or no testing of the deep ground has ever been done. 5 CHAPTER I. INTRODUCTION. LOCATION. The Tuya-Teslin Area, comprising about 1,600 square milesof uninhabited country, is in the Stikine and Atlin Mining Divisions of Northern British Columbia (Fig. 1). The area extends from the southern end of Teslin Lake (approximately 59' 30' north,, 132" west) to within.about 18 miles

Most of the Province of British Columbia lies within the region of mountains and plateaus, the Cordillera of Western Canada, that forms the western border of the North American Continent. The extreme northeastern comer of the Province, lying east of the Cordillera, is part of the Great Plains region. The Rocky Mountain Area extends along the eastern boundary of the Province for a distance of 400 miles, and continues northwestward for an additional 500 miles entirely within the Province. The high, rugged Rocky Mountains, averaging about 50 miles in width, are flanked on the west by a remarkably long and straight valley, known as the Rocky Mountain Trench, and occupied from south to north by the Kootenay, Columbia, Canoe, Fraser, Parsnip, Finlay, Fox, and Kechika Rivers. Of these, the first four flow into the Pacific Ocean and the second four join the Mackenzie River to flow ultimately into the Arctic Ocean.

    935 Holocene tephras in lake cores from northern British Columbia, Canada Thomas R. Lakeman, John J. Clague, Brian Menounos, Gerald D. Osborn, Britta J.L. Jensen, and Duane G. Froese Abstract: Sediment cores recovered from alpine and subalpine lakes up to 250 km apart in northern British Columbia con- tain five previously unrecognized tephras. Two black phonolitic tephras, each 5–10 mm thick, occur within 2–4 cm of each other in basal sediments from seven lakes in the Finlay River – Dease Lake area. The upper and lower Finlay tephras are slightly older than 10 220 – 10 560 cal year B.P. and likely originate from two closely spaced eruptions of one or two large volcanoes in the northern Cordilleran volcanic province. The Finlay tephras occur at the transition between deglacial sediments and organic-rich postglacial mud in the lake cores and, therefore, closely delimit the termination of the Fraser Glaciation in northern British Columbia. Sediments in Bob Quinn Lake, which lies on the east edge of the northern Coast Mountains, contain two black tephras that differ in age and composition from the Finlay tephras. The lower Bob Quinn tephra is 3–4 mm thick, basaltic in composition, and is derived from an eruption in the Iskut River volcanic field about 9400 cal years ago. The upper Bob Quinn tephra is 12 mm thick, trachytic in composition, and probably 7000–8000 cal years old. A fifth tephra occurs as a cryptotephra near the top of two cores from the Finlay River area and is correlated to the east lobe of the White River tephra (ca.

    GEOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTIC OF THE REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA TERRITORY Republic of Armenia is situated in south-western part of Asia. The country occupies the north-eastern part of Armenian plateau – between Caucasus and Nearest Asia (the inter- river territory between the middle flows of Kur and Araks rivers). The total territory is located in the latitude of 380 501 - 410 181 N and longitude of 430 271 - 460 371 E. In the north and east it borders with Georgia and Azerbaijan, and in the west and south – Turkey and Iran. The country’s area comprises 29743 km2, of which 46.8% - agricultural land, 34.9% - mountains, plateaus and other land, 12.7% - forests and 5.6% - water surface. The highest elevation of the country is the Peak of Aragats Mountain (4090 m), the deepest landslide – the Debed river canyon (390 m). The longest extension from north-west to south-east is 360 km, and from west to east – 200 km. But it’s equally challenging when young kids are involved and you’re worried about making sure they’re having fun and are SAFE. This is a tall order when they’re inhaling mosquitoes, pad- dling through water as cold as ice with big hydraulics or camping in bear country. Our “wilderness” trip got a rocky start as we passed a sign below Whitehorse that cautioned about treated effluent being discharged into the river. Sev- eral miles below town we ran into a grocery cart stick- ing out of a muddy bar in a bend on the river. As we paddled across the 30-mile long Lake Lebarge, made famous by Robert Service’s poetic celebration of the Cremation of Sam McGee, we saw abundant signs of humans everywhere: tent sites, rusted cans, old cables, and broken glass. But gradually these modern archaeological arti- facts disappear as we get into dining on grayling and wild onions further down the river. Saxifrage, blue- Straight off the water to the telephone, Mika Morton, 11, bells, cinquefoil, wild sweet pea, and fleabane are flow- reconnects with civilization in Eagle after 700 miles on ering everywhere. These headwaters are in the heart of the traditional territory of the Teslin Tlingit people. The Teslin Tlingit have shared ancestry with the coastal Tlingit of Southeast Alaska and the part of the water Inland Tlingit of Taku River First Nation and Carcross-Tagish First Nation. There are five Teslin Tlingit Clans which play a central role in Teslin Tlingit Council’s (TTC) government structure and cultural practices. They are the Raven Child Clan (Kùkhhittàn), Frog Clan (Ishkìtàn), Wolf Clan (Yanyèdí), Beaver Clan (Dèshitàn), and Eagle Clan (Dakhl’awèdí). Chinook salmon (T’à), also known as King salmon, and a part of the Ishkìtàn Clan, is an important resource for Teslin Tlingit Citizens, being both culturally significant and important for subsistence. Once, Chinook salmon returned to the Teslin area in numbers that made the rivers run red. Over the last 30 years, pressures such as ocean bycatch, in-river commercial fisheries, and climate change have cumulatively taken a significant toll on the Chinook salmon returns. TTC has taken a proactive approach to salmon management and has implemented conservation measures for over 15 years in response to the alarming decrease in the salmon run size and quality.
