Important Information for Gateway Students

The Gateway program supports adults who are first-time students or returning to college after a break in enrollment. We know that your experience as a Gateway student is unique, as you may be balancing work, family and general life responsibilities in addition to your studies. We also know that many students have found that the Gateway program provides an enriching journey that leads to personal and professional growth.

GATEWAY LUNCHES Once a month, the Office of Student Affairs hosts a Gateway lunch in Anderson Dining Hall. These events are free for Gateway Students, and you can pick up your voucher for your meal at the cashier’s desk. We reserve a table just for Gateway Students, which provides you with an opportunity to meet, get to know, and chat with other Gateway Students. There is also always a representative from the Office of Student Affairs on hand to answer any questions you may have. Check your e-mail and ChathamU Mobile App for upcoming Gateway Lunch dates.

GATEWAY NEWSLETTER The Office of Student Affairs sends a monthly e-mail newsletter designed to keep adult students informed of important news, as well as campus events that may be of interest to our adult student population.

ALPHA SIGMA LAMBDA HONOR SOCIETY Alpha Sigma Lambda is the oldest and largest national honor society in America today which recognizes the achievements of adult students who accomplish academic excellence while facing the competing interests of work and home. Students are selected from the highest 20% of the students who have 24 graded credits. If you are an adult student who meets these criteria and are interested in applying for membership in Alpha Sigma Lambda, please contact the Office of Student Affairs at [email protected]. 3

GETTING STARTED AT CHATHAM After you have been accepted into Chatham University, there may still be a few things that you need to do before the first day of classes.

Completing Your Admissions Requirements If your acceptance into Chatham is conditional upon receipt of all of your paperwork required for full admission, be sure to forward all outstanding materials to the Office of Admission before the academic term begins. If you are unsure which materials have been received by the Office of Admission, please contact your admission counselor.

Pay Deposit, Tuition, and Fees In order to begin setting up your student account at Chatham (e-mail, access to intranet, and Chatham ID), you must pay your deposit. You can pay this deposit online. www.chatham.edu/ > Admission & Aid > Submit Your Deposit

There are many options available to pay your tuition and fees at Chatham University. The Office of Financial Aid can assist you in finding the option most appropriate for you to finance your Chatham University education.

Before the beginning of each term, you will receive an invoice for your tuition from the Office of Student Accounts. www.chatham.edu > Admission & Aid > Loans & Payment Options

Check Your E-mail Regularly Your Chatham e-mail is the primary way that you will receive communications from the University. It is recommended that you check your Chatham e-mail daily so that you do not miss information about your classes, campus activities and important updates.

Housing Decide if you are living on or off campus. If you are living on campus contact the Office of Residence Life. If you are planning to commute, fill out the Application for Commuter Status on my.Chatham.edu under My Tools. See page 9 for more information and details about living on campus.

Getting your Student ID Card Every new Chatham student must obtain a student ID card. Once you are registered for classes, you can visit the Office of Student Affairs in Woodland Hall to obtain your ID. Your Chatham ID Card will be your official form of identification on campus. It will give you access to the Jennie King Mellon Library, the Athletic and Fitness Center, and other campus services. Your photo ID also allows you to use your meal plan and your Flex or Cougar dollars at Chatham dining facilities. 4

All students are required to have a Chatham Student ID Card. ID cards are issued through the Office of Student Affairs between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The process is quick and easy. It only takes a few minutes to have your picture taken and a card printed. A replacement fee of $25 is charged to students who request a replacement ID.

Register for Classes Check in with your Academic Advisor to make sure that you have the classes you need for the first term.

Complete Health/Immunization Records You will receive an e-mail to your Chatham University e-mail account from Med+Proctor shortly after you deposit prompting you to set-up your account, where you will complete and upload the required health and immunization record information. You will need to log in, create an account, and have information verified by your doctor’s office. See page 15 for more information.

Student Health Insurance All full-time students are required to have health insurance coverage. Full-time students who wish to enroll in the Chatham University Student Health Insurance Plan can do so online at my.chatham.edu. The University-sponsored plan is designed to meet basic health care needs at an affordable cost. Open enrollment runs from June 1, 2020 through August 31, 2020 for the fall term and December 1, 2020 through January 11, 2021 for the spring term.

Attend Orientation Gateway students are welcome to participate in all orientation activities which occur the week prior to the start of the term. However, Gateway students are not required to attend events. Please review the schedule of events and decide what programs and activities you would like to take part in. Academic Rigor Chatham provides a rigorous, challenging curriculum across all majors, designed to give students the tools they need to succeed in the world beyond college. Course load and homework can depend on the specific classes you take, the expectations of your professors, and the overall number of credits in which you have enrolled. In general, for every hour you spend in class, expect at least two hours of work per week outside of class for reading and homework.

Academic Advising Students at Chatham work closely with a faculty member who serves as their academic advisor. Advisors help students select appropriate courses, identify educational and professional goals, and adjust to college-level academics. Together, students and advisors discuss and explore a student’s interests, strengths, challenges, and aspirations to advance each student’s educational and career goals. At Chatham University, advisors and advisees work together throughout the term to develop the optimal program of study for each student.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT Office of Academic & Accessibility Resources (OAAR) OAAR offers academic and disability support services to all Chatham students. All support services are free to Chatham students and can be scheduled by contacting OAAR, located on the third floor of the Jennie King Mellon Library.

TUTORING CENTER Peer tutoring services and supplemental instruction are offered for many subjects and courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Both appointment and walk-in hours are available. 7

WRITING CENTER Staff members are trained to help students through all phases of the writing process from brainstorming to revising, as well as structure, citations, and mechanics.

ACADEMIC SKILL BUILDING & COACHING You can make individual appointments with OAAR staff or utilize self-paced online workshops. Topics include time management, study skills, note-taking, test-taking skills, writing skills, presentation skills, and more.

DISABILITY SERVICES OAAR also coordinates accommodations for students with diagnosed disabilities. Support services accommodation requests are assessed on a case-by-case basis, and students must meet with the director of OAAR to review their documentation and determine their accommodation needs. Requests for accommodations must be initiated by the student at the beginning of each new term. Students who suspect they may have a disability can contact OAAR for off-campus testing resources.

OFFICE OF THE REGISTRAR The Office of the Registrar is located on the first floor of Braun Hall. This office is where you can go to add or drop a class, process forms, verify your student record, get a copy of your transcript, and have many of your academic records questions answers. Advanced Placement (AP) and Transfer College Credits Advanced Placement and transfer college credits can impact your course schedule and move you closer to the goal of 120 credits required for graduation. You must have official copies of your AP exam scores or official copies of transcripts featuring prior college credits sent directly to the University if you wish to receive credit. You and your advisor will use your transfer evaluation to assist in determining remaining requirements.

Prior Learning Assessments (PLA) Students have an opportunity to be awarded up to 60 credits for post–secondary knowledge gained prior to matriculating at Chatham. Contact the your academic advisor for additional information or to explore your eligibility for PLA. 8

Living On Campus

Chatham University maintains affordable housing options for all students conveniently located close to campus. Students who choose to live on campus have the option of living in apartment-style housing or in a traditional residence hall. Family housing is available. Rent includes water, heat, electric, wireless internet, and free laundry facilities. Ten-month academic year leases are offered with a possible summer extension for June/July if space is available. Students are billed to their student accounts in August, January, and June (if applicable). For current housing options, prices, and to determine the best options for your needs, please contact the Office of Residence Life.

Off-Campus Apartments In addition to on-campus offerings, Chatham University will also be leasing off-campus apartments for graduate and Gateway students. These apartments are conveniently located close to Chatham Eastside and Woodland Road. Leasing an off-campus apartment is a great way to explore the city while still being close to campus. Contact the Office of Residence Life to learn more.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE TO-DOS Students who intend to live on campus may secure housing by completing two tasks: ❏❏Pay the $150 housing reservation fee to the Office of Student Accounts. This fee is non-refundable. ❏❏Once your deposit is received, you will receive an e-mail from the Office of Residence Life asking you to complete paperwork online through a program called StarRez.

If you are planning to live off campus and are a first or second year undergraduate student, you must complete the Application for Commuter Status form online via my.chatham.edu.

Commuting to Campus

APPLICATION FOR COMMUTER STATUS If you are planning to commute to campus, please fill out the Application for Commuter Status, which can be found under tools on your myChatham portal. Contact the Office of Student Affairs at [email protected] or 412-365-1286 for more information about commuter programs and services.

GETTING TO AND FROM CAMPUS On-Campus Parking Parking lots can be located on the Campus map. During the day, the library lot located off Murray Hill Ave. has valet parking, which will help you to avoid being late to class if the other lots are full. Please see a campus map for all of your parking options.

PARKING PERMITS If you are planning to park at any of the campus locations, you will need to purchase a parking permit. The online form can be found on MyChatham by clicking on “Parking Permit” under the My Tools page. Note that passes are first come, first served and are limited. It is best to act quickly if you plan to park on campus. Only upperclass students (sophomores-seniors) are permitted to have a vehicle on campus. First-year students who are commuting to campus will need to complete the Application for Commuter Status. Once approved, this application is sent to Public Safety in Rea Garage. Public Safety will need to verify your commuter status before issuing a parking permit.

Off-Campus Parking There are many places near campus where you can park for free or with a City permit. For a guide to convenient, free-off campus parking near campus, see the Off-Campus Parking Map on page 21.

Port Authority Transit Your Chatham University ID allows you to ride all Port Authority buses for free. There are several stops near campus, including on Fifth Avenue at College Street or Maryland Avenue. For complete up-to-date route information, visit www.portauthority.org. The Transit app is also a great resource for bus line times and directions on how to reach your desired destination. 10

Biking to Campus For your convenience, bike racks are located around campus: •• In front of Woodland Hall, facing Woodland Road •• On the Quad near the entrance to Falk Hall •• On the Athletic & Fitness Center patio (front of the building) •• In front of the Barazzone Center at Eden Hall Campus

LOCKERS Commuter lockers, located in Woodland Hall, Falk Hall, and the Lodge at Eden Hall Campus are available for free. Stop by the Office of Student Affairs in Woodland Hall to reserve your locker. You must provide your own lock.

STUDENT LOUNGES Find yourself with some downtime in between classes? There are a number of locations on campus where you can rest and rejuvenate or spend some comfortable time studying. A few popular locations include: •• The Gateway Student Lounge (basement of Mellon) This lounge has a television, computer desktop, couches, study tables, and a refrigerator. •• The Carriage House Student Lounge is accessible 24 hours a day with a student ID. With a fireplace, flat screen TVs, comfortable lounge options, and lunch time food, the Carriage House is a great place to spend some downtime. •• Falk Student Lounge (Falk Hall) is a great place to relax between classes and warm up your lunch. You can also use the vending machine here.

COMMUTER REFRIGERATOR Packing lunch? There are community refrigerators for commuter students located in the Carriage House main floor, as well as at Chatham Eastside on the Mezzanine level in the kitchen. Please label items, be respectful of others’ things, and be aware that the refrigerator is cleaned out and emptied each Friday afternoon. 11

Co-curricular Programs and Student Services

GET INVOLVED ON CAMPUS The Office of Student Engagement at Chatham University is committed to student involvement on Chatham’s campus and provides quality programming, leadership, and community service opportunities, as well as several outside the classroom experiences meant for growth and fun.

There are lots of great things to do at Chatham University and in the Pittsburgh area. Chatham has created the “140 Things To Do Before You Graduate” list to will help you get involved and learn more about the campus and community.

Download the ChathamU mobile app

Visit your app store and search “Chatham U” to find and download the Chatham U app. The app’s homepage is the Events Calendar listing upcoming activities, or you can get there by clicking the little school- house icon. Click “attend” to add events to your personal calendar.

Student Organizations Student Organizations are a great way to get involved on campus. You can read about the organizations at chatham.edu/campuslife/getinvolved/organizations.cfm. You may find one or many that you would be interested in joining. Community Service, Civic Engagement & Leadership Opportunities Chatham provides a plethora of experiential learning opportunities that allow students to explore and develop a personal leadership style, promote social change, and gain meaningful experiences within the Pittsburgh Community. Programs include leadership retreats, the Women of the World (WOW) Leadership Weekend, Emerging Leaders program, the Social Activism Institute, as well as regular community service events. Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion The Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion is responsible for leading efforts to build and sustain a diverse and culturally vibrant campus, which promotes multicultural education and student success and retention. Diversity, Equity & Inclusion supports Chatham University’s educational goals and strategic plan by embracing a social justice and intersectional identity approach to its diversity, equity, and inclusion work. Keep an eye out for programming such as Heritage Month celebrations and lunch-time Diversity Dialogues on the ChathamU Mobile App.

R.I.S.E. (RETAIN. INVOLVE. STRENGTHEN. EXCEL.) MENTORSHIP PROGRAM R.I.S.E. is a mentorship program for students of color that focuses on academic success, professionalism, leadership skills, and fostering community. Transfer students are highly encouraged to participate in the RISE program and can do so by enrolling over the summer with the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT Undecided about your career? Know exactly what you want to do? Either way, the consultants in Career Development are eager to help you develop and reach your goals from year one, day one. Handshake Handshake is the Office of Career Development’s one-stop shop to access services such as appointments with Career Development staff, on- and off-campus job searches, as well as internship and networking opportunities. Student Employment Chatham University’s Student Employment Program provides financial assistance and meaningful professional development opportunities for all full-time students. Working on campus is a great way to build your resume, gain professional skills, and have flexibility that meets your needs as a student.

Professional Competency Development The Office of Career Development is focused on helping you to build your professional resume and skills while you attend Chatham. The professional competency model focuses on building abilities through engagement in experiences in classrooms, extra- curricular activities, internships, mentorship, and experiential learning opportunities.

HEALTH & WELLNESS Seven Dimensions of Wellness: The Path to Personal Health Wellness is a way of life that requires you to intentionally take responsibility for your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in hopes of finding true balance. The Office of Student Affairs recognizes this need to support the growth and development of wellness and balance in the lives of our students. Therefore, programs and events throughout the year will target Ann Boyd Austin’s Seven Dimensions of Wellness to help broaden the experiences and personal health of our student body.

• Physical Wellness: taking positive steps toward a healthy lifestyle; motivating and committing oneself to engaging in fitness, exercise, diet, nutrition, sexual health, sleep, and hygiene • Emotional Wellness: developing a sense of self (values, purpose, expectations, and goals); recognizing and sharing a wide range of feelings with others in a constructive way (communication) • Intellectual Wellness: expanding perspectives of the world; using critical thinking skills; exploring new challenges; embracing lifelong learning; contributing to society in a meaningful way • Social Wellness: establishing positive interactions and meaningful relationships with others; balancing one’s personal and professional responsibilities 14

Athletic and Fitness Center (AFC) The AFC is a multifunctional facility that includes many fitness amenities: •• An eight-lane competition swimming pool •• whirlpool/sauna/steam room •• squash courts •• rock-climbing wall •• dance/aerobics studio •• weight and cardio room •• performance court for basketball and volleyball •• a three-lane jogging track overlooks the gymnasium

During the academic year, free fitness classes are offered to all Chatham University community members to help promote health and wellness. AFC locker privileges may be purchased on a first-come, first-served basis at a cost of $40 for a year or $20 per term. Counseling Center Mental health professionals at the Counseling Center are available to all registered students during the academic terms at no charge. Intake assessments, brief counseling, consultation, and referrals in the community are offered for full time students. Part- time students are eligible for intake assessments, consultation, and referrals in the community. To make an appointment or discuss services offered by the counseling center, call 412-365-1282.

In case of an emergency or a situation in which health or safety are threatened, please call Public Safety at 412-365-1111. Student Health Services Student Health Services is open during the academic year and provides limited medical assistance from a Certified Nurse Practitioner. Student Health Services is located in the basement of Woodland Hall (to the right of the Bookstore) or can be reach by calling 412-365-1714.

Chatham has partnered with the UPMC Urgent Care of Shadyside to attend to our students’ urgent health needs at their location a few miles away from our campus. If you are a registered Chatham student, you will be seen for basic services free of charge at that location. No co-payment is required for these services. If the services rendered result in additional health testing and procedures, your insurance will be charged or you will be billed accordingly. If you visit a UPMC Urgent Care center other than Shadyside, the co-payment will not be waived.

Students residing at Eden Hall have the same access to services by visiting either the UPMC Urgent Care McCandless or UPMC Urgent Care Wexford. Only Eden Hall residents may visit these two Urgent Care sites.

Student Health Services can also help make the necessary arrangements for transporta- tion to the UPMC Urgent Care fof Shadyside facility when you are in need of care.

We also have information available for military students to help navigate the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) Pittsburgh Healthcare System if you are entitled to benefits. For details, please contact Student Health Services at 412-365-1714.

HEALTH/IMMUNIZATION RECORDS Chatham requires you to submit health and immunization record information before classes begin through a secure web-based software platform called Med+Proctor, which will become part of your health record in the Office of Student Health Services. You will receive an e-mail to your Chatham University e-mail account from Med+Proctor (medproctor.com) shortly after you deposit prompting you to set-up your account, where you will complete and upload the required health and immunization record information, which will need to be verified by your doctor’s office.

Campus Resources and Services

ATM For your convenience, an ATM is located in the Post Office (Mellon Hall) and on the second floor of Chatham Eastside (at the entrance to Eastside Café).

BOOKSTORE The bookstore is located on the ground floor of Woodland Hall and provides textbooks, supplies, snacks, and Chatham gear. For more information or to order items online, visit chatham.bkstr.com.

DINING & MEAL PLANS There are multiple dining locations and options to meet your needs. Have a dietary restriction or special need? Please connect with one of the Parkhurst staff so that they can assist you. Also, an Allergy Free Zone for those with nut and gluten allergies is located in Anderson Dining Hall.

Shadyside Campus: There are two dining options located within the Woodland Road location. •• Anderson Dining Hall: Located in Mellon Hall, Anderson offers three meals a day with a variety of a-la-carte and all-you-can-eat options including sandwiches, grill options, salad bar, pizza, and home-style meals. •• Café Rachel: Located in Woodland Hall, Café Rachel offers a variety of coffee, tea, beverages and some on-the-go snacks. Café Rachel is open until midnight for your late night needs.

Chatham Eastside: At Chatham Eastside, the Eastside Café provides a variety of a-la- carte options including fresh made pizza, burgers and sandwiches, salad bar, and more.

Meal Plans Parkhurst Dining at Chatham University offers a variety of plans to suit student needs. These plans give our diners control and flexibility along with the best value for the dollar. Students use their Chatham ID to swipe for meals and Cougar dollars. Any student is welcome to purchase a meal plan; undergraduate, graduate, commuter, or resident. Minimums apply for residential students. Unused block plans expire at the end of each term and the meals in the traditional plans expire at the end of each week. Flex dollars roll over from fall to spring terms only with the purchase of a spring meal plan.

POST OFFICE The Post Office, located in Mellon Center beneath Anderson Dining Hall, receives and sends packages throughout the week through US Postal Service and UPS.
