The Graduate School Program Commencement SPRING SEMESTER 2020 THE GRADUATE SCHOOL May 9, 2020 National Anthem Alma Mater by Francis Scott Key by Fred Lewis Pattee O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light, For the glory of old State, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming; For her founders, strong and great, Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro’ the perilous fight, For the future that we wait, O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? Raise the song, raise the song, And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air Gave proof thro’ the night that our flag was still there. Sing our love and loyalty, O say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave Sing our hopes that, bright and free, O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave! Rest, O Mother dear, with thee. All with thee, all with thee. When we stood at childhood’s gate, Shapeless in the hands of fate, Thou didst mold us, dear old State, Dear old State, dear old State. May no act of ours bring shame To one heart that loves thy name, May our lives but swell thy fame, Dear old State, dear old State! Commencement SPRING SEMESTER 2020 THE GRADUATE SCHOOL Saturday, May 9, 2020 Message from Regina Vasilatos-Younken, B.S., Ph.D. Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate School To each of our graduates who has earned an advanced degree today, the culmination of your significant accomplishments personifies the ideals that have established Penn State as one of the world’s premiere educational institutions and research universities. With your graduate training, I am confident you will make tangible, positive impacts on human and economic development, promote a better understanding of our global and diverse communities, cultivate an enhanced civic and cultural climate, and ensure the continued advancement of professional practice. As you go forward with your advanced degrees, at every opportunity seek out and get to know individuals who are as different as possible from you, in any and every respect. Diversity in every dimension ensures you will be exposed to different experiences, perspectives, and awareness, and invariably leads to expanding your intellectual horizons. Intellectual diversity is critical in order to solve the truly complex problems that are facing us today, and to prepare you to be contributing members of what will be an increasingly global community. Today’s public health crisis has made evident the need for leaders who take responsibility, apply knowledge, critical thinking, and evidence-based decision-making, collaborate across boundaries, and lead with integrity, all of which exemplify graduate education. You are indeed one of those critical leaders we celebrate today and will rely upon in the future. The 19th century pioneer microbiologist and chemist, Louis Pasteur, observed that “Chance favors only the prepared mind.” You are each well-prepared to take on the considerable challenges we face, and I have no doubt your impact will be purposeful. As you go forward, be well and please continue to expand on the difference you are already making in the world. 1 Spring 2020 Commencement NATIONAL ANTHEM Amina Faye ’20, Musical Theatre, College of Arts and Architecture PRESIDING Eric J. WORLD WAR I ARMISTICE DAY CENTENNIAL Sacred Service NOVEMBER 11, 2018 WASHINGTON NATIONAL CATHEDRAL WORLD WAR I ARMISTICE DAY CENTENNIAL Sacred Service NOVEMBER 11, 2018 WASHINGTON NATIONAL CATHEDRAL WW1 100 THE UNITED STATES YEARS WORLD WAR ONE CENTENNIAL COMMISSION Bells of Peace: A World War I Remembrance The United States World War I Centennial Commission launched a nationwide effort calling on Americans to toll bells across our country today, exactly one hundred years after the armistice, to honor the sacrifices of our fellow Americans in the Great War. Beginning at precisely 1100 EST, Washington National Cathedral’s bourdon bell will toll 21 times. It will be joined by bells in communities across the East Coast and will continue during the Eleventh Hour of the Eleventh Day of the Eleventh Month in each time zone of the United States. Participants include places of worship, schools, town halls, carillons, cemeteries, and local DAR, VFW and American Legion posts across the country. Additionally, all United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard installations, as well as Naval and Coast Guard ships at port and at sea, will toll their bells at the Eleventh Hour of this day to honor those who wore the uniform one hundred years ago. To Inspire the Future by Remembering our Past One hundred years ago, bells from steeples perched all over the world rang out in relief and joy, sorrow and hope, at news of the great Armistice. The war was over, but the hard work of peace lay ahead. Families, homes, and cities lay in ruins.

The college received its charter from the State of Minnesota in 1874, and for the next several years its founders raised funds, hired faculty, planned courses, completed a classroom-office-residence building, and recruited students in preparation for Macalester’s opening in September 1885. The legacy of those founders—Presbyterian ministers and educators who strove for rigor and excellence—is a liberal arts college recognized for its academic excellence, its traditions of international and intercultural understanding, and its commitment to civic engagement. To carry out its educational mission, Macalester has assembled a distinguished faculty of 220 full-time and 70 part-time teachers and scholars who represent a broad array of disciplines in the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and fine arts. Macalester’s 2,009 full-time and 40 part-time students represent 50 states (and Washington, D.C.) in the United States and 95 other nations. Their academic achievements are numerous and impressive, as demonstrated by awards including 13 Rhodes Scholarships since 1904, and, in the last 10 years, 62 Fulbright Grants, 42 National Science Foundation Fellowships, 10 Thomas J. Watson Fellowships, four Truman Scholarships, four Goldwater Fellowships, one Beinecke Scholarship, and one Udall Scholarship. Macalester’s international emphasis is reflected in the fact that about 60 percent of its students study abroad for a semester or more during their college careers.
