A quick note to begin with; I was a big fan of Angel Angel: After the Fall v. 1 series, and am still somewhat bitter that it was cancelled a season too soon something which is very noticeable in how rushed the plot feels in the final season. I approach this graphical novel therefore as an Angel fan who wanted more from these characters, and more of Joss Whedon's writing. The Senior Partners have literally rained hell down on Los Angeles, turning the city into a demon war zone. The human population of LA have mostly been enslaved my various demon groups, who have divided the city amongst themselves, whilst Angel, Spike, Connor et al continue to do their best to both survive and help others in this vastly changed landscape. First of all, there was a heavy sense of nostalgia in experiencing these characters again, and Joss Whedon's writing for that matter. This new story is a progression from the sort of background that was Angel: After the Fall v. 1 norm in the tv series, but still feels familiar in terms of the characters, action and snappy dialogue. I really did enjoy this, and the ending in particular makes me want to move on to the next part. The only reason I don't give this 5 stars is because the adjustment from tv series to graphic novel was a little bumpy for me initially; the two mediums are very different, and it took some time for me to adjust. This is not necessarily a fault of the the writers, but nevertheless is something that slightly affected me. I can still do nothing less than recommend this, though. It is a great way for Angel fans to keep the series alive. Dec 14, When in doubt, go to the library. I'm only giving it two stars because Cordy was in it. Angel: After the Fall v. 1 artwork was gratuitous. Every female body was so explicit. Sep 17, Gretchen rated it it was amazing Shelves: graphic-novel. Should have seen that ending coming, realized maybe a minute before the characters did how it had to play out. But I always get weepy with Fred. Jul 19, Jim rated it really liked it Shelves: gcpl-shelf-buffy-the-vampire-slayerhorror-and-supernaturaljims-reviews. Complete collection of the great After the Fall story arc. But I think you're better off getting Angel: Season 6 volumes one and two for the extra content. I never liked Angel the series as much as Buffy except when Angelus awokeso I was a bit hesitant to read these. Still, I wanted to because they had Spike, and I would understand the Angel: After the Fall v. 1 a bit better. They were alright, but lacked the quirkiness of Buffyand the fact that I'm not a huge fan of Angel Angel: After the Fall v. 1 help. The art, however, was wonderful as usual apart from Jason Armstrong, whose art was so atrocious I had a hard time focusing on the story. Urru's style is gorgeous, and it's I never liked Angel the series as much as Buffy except when Angelus awokeso I Angel: After the Fall v. 1 a bit hesitant to read these. Urru's style is gorgeous, and it's what I want from comics. Brian Denham was also great, his characters looked a lot like themselves. What comes to the season finale of the series, some people seemed to have trouble with the sudden ending. I liked it, it suited the themes very well and it was dramatic. Here are two quotes that I found from some random forum sorry, can't remember whereand which sum up my thoughts exactly. From beginning to Angel: After the Fall v. 1, it's about his fight against evil and more than once it's emphasized this fight can never truly be over, but that will never totally stop Angel from working for the good side even if he loses everyone he loves. Sep 01, Michelle rated it really liked it Shelves: i-read. In this collection we find that L. As far as the crew goes we get to see how Lorne has faired and has dealt with killing Lindsey. Spike is still Spike. All fisticuffs and chiseled cheekbones. He's taken it upon himself to care for Illyria who keeps slipping into the Fred persona when faced with people she loved. Ofcourse this tends to happen at the most inopportune times. Besides Angel the biggest character transformation goes to Gun view spoiler [who we learn was turned into a vampire during the alley battle. Connor, Nina and Gwen also have stories but I don't really care about them so Aug 07, Matt rated it liked it. OK, so it's not a great endorsement that I read this again, just so I could keep everything straight. But it was nice to have it all together without intermission. The art's not super so it's often hard to tell what's going on. On the plus side, some of the minor characters from the TV series come together as a team and that's fun. Brian Lynch isn't a super writer, but there are enough twists and good jokes to make it enjoyable. My favorite part of the introduction: Set-up: "Obviously, the chance OK, so it's not a great endorsement that I read this again, just so I could keep everything straight. My favorite part of the introduction: Set-up: "Obviously, the chance to write the continuation of my favorite show that didn't involve Kirk Cameron WITH the creator of said show [Joss Whedon] was a dream come true. That episode was Smile Time, in case you were wondering [in which Angel becomes a Muppet]. She loved it, but was disappointed when I told her the puppets don't return. Mar 28, Greg rated it really liked it. When the final episode of Angel aired, I just loved the Butch Cassidy ending.

When I say this, I don’t just mean that I am a fan of Joss Whedon. I am sincere. I live and breathe his works, the ever-expanding universe— sometimes funny, sometimes scary, and often heartbreaking—that he has created. A multi- talented writer, director and creator, Joss is responsible for television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer , Firefly , Angel , and Dollhouse . In 2012 he collaborated with Drew Goddard, writer for Buffy and Angel , to bring us the satirical horror film The Cabin in the Woods . Most recently he has been integrated into the Marvel cinematic universe as the director of The Avengers franchise, as well as earning a creative credit for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. My love for Joss Whedon began in 1998. I was only eleven years old, and through an incredible moment of happenstance, and a bit of boredom, I turned the television channel to the WB and encountered my first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer . I was instantly smitten with Buffy Summers. She defied the rules and regulations of my conservative southern upbringing.

Several questions at [email protected] were about hell. Will the wicked suffer forever in torments of flame? Will they be there as long as we are in heaven? What about people who don't know about Jesus? There were perhaps ten variations on this theme. I have been hesitant to answer these questions because I am in the middle of a major study on this myself. If you will offer me permission to "think aloud" on this difficult topic and be kind to offer me grace if I am wrong, I will go ahead and begin to answer. It may take several columns to deal with the issues involved. Full disclosure: I believe there are elements of ego and wish fulfillment that hover around any theological discussion. I want to be upfront about my own issues here. I was raised in the far right of the Church of Christ. All people who didn't follow our system were, I was assured, bound for eternity in flames. A million million years in torment, they would be no closer to the end of their suffering than they were on the day they died. This hell-bound group included more than the obvious candidates (smokers, drinkers, dancers, atheists, card players, Hitler). It also consisted of any person who went to any other church than our particular branch of the CoC. I didn't want that to be true. I agonized even as a young child about how God could burn people forever and yet say "God is love." I bring this up because, as I paw through this pile of books on my desk this cold, snowy morning, I want to be open and say that my desire to find an alternative view might be impacting me in subconscious ways.

Tauris and appears here with the permission of the author, the editor, and the publisher. Go here to order the book from Amazon. (1) Joss Whedon has often stated that each year of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was planned to end in such a way that, were the show not renewed, the finale would act as an apt summation of the series so far. This was obviously truer of some years than others – generally speaking, the odd-numbered years were far more clearly possible endings than the even ones, offering definitive closure of a phase in Buffy’s career rather than a slingshot into another phase. Both Season Five and Season Seven were particularly planned as artistically satisfying conclusions, albeit with very different messages – Season Five arguing that Buffy’s situation can only be relieved by her heroic death, Season Seven allowing her to share, and thus entirely alleviate, slayerhood. Being the Chosen One is a fatal burden; being one of the Chosen Several Thousand is something a young woman might live with. (2) It has never been the case that endings in Angel were so clear-cut and each year culminated in a slingshot ending, an attention-grabber that kept viewers interested by allowing them to speculate on where things were going. Season One ended with the revelation that Angel might, at some stage, expect redemption and rehumanization – the Shanshu of the souled vampire – as the reward for his labours, and with the resurrection of his vampiric sire and lover, Darla, by the law firm of Wolfram & Hart and its demonic masters (‘To Shanshu in LA’, 1022).

This text may be archived and redistributed both in electronic form and in hard copy, provided that the author and journal are properly cited and no fee is charged for access. Abstract. In The Sea (2005) and The Gathering (2007), John Banville and Anne Enright incorporate modernist and postmodernist intertextuality into accounts of bereavement. While the shattered existence of the protagonists is seemingly devoid of religious belief, they mobilize the palimpsestic immemorial past of mythological and fairy-tale intertexts to make sense of broken realities. The narrators’ self-portraits and invocations of lost people and places, oscillating between reminiscence and mythification, underscore postmodernism’s play with canonical stories. Both authors use mythological syncretism to express their characters’ quest for meaning: while Greek, Egyptian and Norse gods invade The Sea’s modern-day “Atlantis” (132), The Gathering is peopled with subverted Christian and Irish figures. However, rather than restoring coherence, myth and fairy-tale tropes are suffused with desperate irony, and the magic spell woven by mythological counterpoints turns out to be a post-traumatic, grimacing reflection of the characters’ troubled psyches, or an obfuscating screen. By interweaving and debunking seminal myths and tales, Banville and Enright give life to personal myths that bespeak the characters’ deep-seated sense of loss and disenchantment.
