I enjoyed their conversations but the general story was sort of Then again, that is the Buffyverse way of handling things! Jan 30, Sesana rated it it was ok Shelves: comicsfantasy. Well, that was pointless. The story is dull enough that I doubt the writer was interested in it. The character of Eddie Hope actually got a lore more development Spike: The Devil You Know the one shot I read in Angel: The End than he does in the entirety of this miniseries. The art Well, I've resigned myself to these media tie-in comics having a really slight grasp on how to draw actual people, but this was another thing entirely. The artist couldn't seem to decide from one panel to the next how to draw Spike, and Well, that was pointless. The artist couldn't seem to decide from one panel to the next how to draw Spike, and he couldn't have looked like himself in more than a few panels. Jan 24, Bradley rated it it was ok Shelves: fantasygraphic-novelsurban-fantasy. It was all right. Sure, closing a hellmouth with the help of a devil is fun and all, but what can I say? It's all been done before in buffyverse. I really want the characters to look more like themselves, too. I'd read this only if you're a die-hard completionist like me. Aug 03, kory. The dynamic between Spike and Eddie is nice. Apr 24, Jim C rated it it was ok. This collection is your basic buddy cop team up where two people who do not like each other pair up to defeat a common enemy. In this one, Spike teams up with Eddie Hope who had a minor role in previous Angel issues. Their common enemy is someone from Spike's past who is attempting to open a mini hellmouth. There is really nothing new here. The idea of a villain opening a hellmouth has been done before. The team up of Eddie and Spike never really works. They try the witty banter and attempt to outdo each other but it never comes across as delightful entertainment. And that is not even the worst aspect about this collection. That distinction belongs to the artwork. It would be nice if a comic based on a television show character somewhat resembled the actor. In this collection, the Spike character illustration would differ from panel to panel and was a sad replica of the character. This was a quick read and I would only recommend this to die hard fans Spike: The Devil You Know myself. This can be skipped because there is no vital information for Spike's story arc. Spike is introduced to Eddie Hope and they have a wild night trying to save the day. The dialogue was spot on as Spike sounded like Spike and the plot was fun. The art by Chris Cross was great. The book could have used a little help from editorial with more obvious chapter breaks and footnotes. Overall, a really great book! Mar 12, innae rated it liked it Shelves: graphic-novelhc. I got lost a few times during the story, maybe because many of the panels didn't matter? This was an okay story, and the back and forth with Spike and Eddie was all right. I missed seeing some more of my favorites - Illyria had one panel and was gone, Angel was mentioned, but only seen in the flashbacks. Dec 30, Bob rated it it was amazing. Enjoyable story wherein Spike is enticed into a trap by a beautiful woman. Her employer, a rabid vampire, Tansy has struck a deal to open man-sized Hellmouths in various cities and fears that Spike will try to close them. Spike strikes an uneasy partnership with a demon, Eddie Hope, in Spike: The Devil You Know to stop Tansy. I highly recommend this book. Sep 27, Jim rated it really liked it Shelves: gcpl-shelf-buffy-the-vampire-slayergothamcitypubliclibrary-comicsjims-reviews. Eddie and Spike team up. Quite an enjoyable Spike story. Jun Spike: The Devil You Know, pianogal rated it liked it Shelves: readsgraphicnovel. Not my favorite. Not a bad story, but some of Spike: The Devil You Know didn't ring as Spike. He was a little butch in some of the drawings and his trademark snark was Spike: The Devil You Know. Jan 22, Candiebarr rated it liked it Shelves: the-reading. Spike: The Devil You Know fact, there were a few pages at the back of the book before it was coloured and it looked much cleaner. Like, why did Spike just happen to run into Eddie? Why is she opening it? In all honesty, the only thing worth reading it for are the few coloured pages Spike: The Devil You Know the end that are Spike: The Devil You Know of cool looking. Feb Spike: The Devil You Know, Jonathan Coulombe rated it really liked it Shelves: comics. As usual, Spike makes a great character to put into a story. This one feels really like an episode of Spike: The Devil You Know TV series as it involves adventures during a single night out. The author managed a good mix of adding a little bit of Spike background while keeping it to the present day. The pace was also really strong in this one. Second, Spike is a great character, and As usual, Spike makes a great character to put into a story. Second, Spike is a great character, and Eddie was interesting, but mixing the two of them, while the result was great, was not like having Spike with someone else from the show in terms of possibilities for dialogues and what not. Hence, I feel it could have been even better as a trio if Gunn was in it or another Spike: The Devil You Know. Great read however. Aug 14, Alex rated it it was ok Shelves: graphic-novels. Spike: The Devil You Know by Bill Williams His next move is to take Joss Whedon's other charismatic vampire out for a chaotic adventure in "Spike: Devil You Know," a four-issue miniseries shipping in June. Spike, a one-time slayer of Slayers, former lover of Buffy, and perpetual nuisance to Angel, finds himself racing to prevent new Hellmouths from opening in Los Angeles. But while he may not have the usual crew at his back, that doesn't mean Spike's alone. Williams introduced Hope in his back-up stories in the "Angel" ongoing series. The back-up serial was introduced when "Fables" writer Bill Willingham took over "Angel" and worked Williams into the title's Spike: The Devil You Know direction. Along the way, we talked about the kind of projects we were working on so I guess that was fresh in his mind. When he talked to IDW about writing the 'Angel' series, he mentioned me and he wrote a role for me into the pitch. Once IDW agreed, the two of us talked about what the Eddie stories needed to do and I took the relevant part of the pitch document and went to work. I have four pages a chapter, which works out to about sixteen panels a month to tell a story. It's a challenge and it makes every panel and every line of dialogue that much more important. Williams continued, "For the first few stories, I am free to wander around and have fun with the character, knowing that Eddie is crashing Spike: The Devil You Know Team Angel pretty soon. I managed to mix up a one-shot story with a three-parter and another one-shot story. One of the things I bring from doing digital comics is the feeling for story compression. When you sit down to read the Eddie stories all at once, they really zip along. Our first trade paperback should be in an upcoming Previews catalog and it will ship later in the summer. It is my understanding that the Eddie stories will be in that trade. Eddie's mission overlaps with Spike's for a brief but defining period of time. After that scene wraps up, Spike talks Eddie into helping him stop the Hellmouth from being opened by the bad guys.

When I say this, I don’t just mean that I am a fan of Joss Whedon. I am sincere. I live and breathe his works, the ever-expanding universe— sometimes funny, sometimes scary, and often heartbreaking—that he has created. A multi- talented writer, director and creator, Joss is responsible for television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer , Firefly , Angel , and Dollhouse . In 2012 he collaborated with Drew Goddard, writer for Buffy and Angel , to bring us the satirical horror film The Cabin in the Woods . Most recently he has been integrated into the Marvel cinematic universe as the director of The Avengers franchise, as well as earning a creative credit for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. My love for Joss Whedon began in 1998. I was only eleven years old, and through an incredible moment of happenstance, and a bit of boredom, I turned the television channel to the WB and encountered my first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer . I was instantly smitten with Buffy Summers. She defied the rules and regulations of my conservative southern upbringing.

  • Slayage, Number 3: Clark and Miller
Daniel A. Clark & P. Andrew Miller Buffy, the Scooby Gang, and Monstrous Authority: BtVS and the Subversion of Authority (1) Buffy the Vampire Slayer, like much of the fare on the WB network (the show's home for the first five seasons), is marketed to and most popular among younger viewers. Like Dawson's Creek, Charmed, Roswell, and Popular, it depicts a young attractive cast struggling with the issues that typically face young adult characters on television, if not young adults in real life. A recent promotional spot on the WB for these shows features the stars laughing, dancing, and partying. The spot ends with the phrase “The night is young” on the screen. Current promotional spots feature the same imagery with a hip-hop version of The Who's "My Generation" on the soundtrack. They are young and hip and appeal to a young audience that uses television as one of the cultural texts that informs their interpretive communities. There are a number of elements of BtVS that have potential significance for an audience, but the ones on which we choose to focus are the issues of authority and power in the show. Issues of power and authority provide the show with most of its plot lines as well as thematic context. (2) Authority is viewed primarily through the eyes of the show's teen protagonists and so takes on the guise of traditional figures from the spheres in which the characters travel: school authority embodied by administrators, teachers, professors, and coaches; social authority embodied by parents; and civic authority embodied by local and federal officials and police.

Matthew Pateman The University of Hull “YOU SAY TOMATO” Englishness in Buffy the Vampire Slayer After finally managing to have Lolita published, Vladimir Nabokov had to confront the various criticisms and concerns regarding his novel. Apart from the obvious attacks against its supposed immorality, Nabokov also had to contend with a range of interpretations that, for the great exponent of subtlety and care, seemed to be reductive and simplifying in the extreme. Among these was included a reading that tended to see the figure of Humbert as represen- tative of Old Europe and which read Lolita herself as synecdochic of America. Thus the novel becomes a tale of brash, crude, young America being debau- ched by the sophisticated but depraved and perverse Europe (Nabokov, “On a book entitled Lolita” 314). While there may be some critical interest in this reading, on its own it inevitably serves to reduce this colossally self-conscious, allusive, intelligent and moving work to the level of a rather blunt allegory. By only allowing the characters to act in one fashion, here as the ciphers of an al- legorical puzzle, the text loses much of its multiplicity and also the thematic, sympathetic and inter-personal resonances it should be allowed. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is not, of course, Lolita.

Roz Kaveney A Sense of the Ending: Schrödinger's Angel This essay will be included in Stacey Abbott's Reading Angel: The TV Spinoff with a Soul, to be published by I. B. Tauris and appears here with the permission of the author, the editor, and the publisher. Go here to order the book from Amazon. (1) Joss Whedon has often stated that each year of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was planned to end in such a way that, were the show not renewed, the finale would act as an apt summation of the series so far. This was obviously truer of some years than others – generally speaking, the odd-numbered years were far more clearly possible endings than the even ones, offering definitive closure of a phase in Buffy’s career rather than a slingshot into another phase. Both Season Five and Season Seven were particularly planned as artistically satisfying conclusions, albeit with very different messages – Season Five arguing that Buffy’s situation can only be relieved by her heroic death, Season Seven allowing her to share, and thus entirely alleviate, slayerhood. Being the Chosen One is a fatal burden; being one of the Chosen Several Thousand is something a young woman might live with. (2) It has never been the case that endings in Angel were so clear-cut and each year culminated in a slingshot ending, an attention-grabber that kept viewers interested by allowing them to speculate on where things were going. Season One ended with the revelation that Angel might, at some stage, expect redemption and rehumanization – the Shanshu of the souled vampire – as the reward for his labours, and with the resurrection of his vampiric sire and lover, Darla, by the law firm of Wolfram & Hart and its demonic masters (‘To Shanshu in LA’, 1022).

  • Brick Lane Patchwork
Kill Shakespeare – This Bard contains graphic language! by Mauro Gentile Today, the adaptation of Shakespeare plays into comic books or graphic novels appears to be a well-established literary practice in contemporary storytelling. As a matter of fact, Kill Shakespeare is inscribed within an ever-increasing circle of comics transpositions that can be considered almost a subgenre per se. This subgenre includes a wide range of Shakespearean adaptations, whose heterogeneity is determined by their intended readers, their graphic approaches, or their adherence to the source texts. On one hand, for instance, A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1951), Hamlet (1952), and Macbeth (1955) were published in the Classic Illustrated series and were thought to be a way of drawing reluctant young readers to literature thanks to their visual appeal, whereas the re-interpretations of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1990) and The Tempest (1996) in Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman were addressed to an adult audience. On the other, in the 1980s, Oval Projects, Ltd. adapted three Shakespearean plays “in strictly visual terms” (Versaci 2007:193), producing King Lear (1984), a graphic novel in which Ian Pollock’s illustrations stand out for their experimental stance while, in the 2000s, Self Made Hero published the Manga Shakespeare series, mixing Shakespeare and the Japanese comics style. Nevertheless, all these comic book adaptations are not just condensed versions of Shakespeare’s plays as they explore new spaces of interpretation of Shakespeare’s works. The word-image interplay is particularly appropriate to spotlight a new imagery dwelling on the margins of verbal language, revealing the flexible nature of comics language, usually imbued with intertextual elements and metanarrative connotations.
