Rear cover: Great collections also enable us to make Arts and Crafts stationery connections that have relevance to us in New compendium Zealand. Earlier this year whilst the A+O team was Lot #172 (detail) undertaking research for the Martin Hill Collection of International Ceramics (catalogue 43, June Previous page: 2011) we uncovered a fascinating New Zealand Interior view of Ian Athfield link relating to Dame Lucie Rie. In the 1930s her designed private residence (1969) Viennese apartment was designed by the Austrian showcasing items from Ross architect Ernst Plischke (1903–1992). Fleeing the Morrison’s private collection. onset of WWII Plischke arrived in New Zealand in 1939. His influence in the development of modernist architecture in New Zealand was decisive and like so many of the architects of the period he did not limit himself to the built form. Lots 144 & 145 are examples of his lighting design, in this case for the St Martin’s Church in Christchurch.

A great collection is also by definition an exercise in cultural archaeology and in a New Zealand context it is an opportunity to celebrate the dedication and acumen of the collector but also offer thanks for their commitment to maintaining these important objects.
