Later on in the afternoon we visited the Hill 62 Museum which has very well preserved trenches and bunkers and the students had time to experience these and also the museum on the site. In the evening we went to see a play written by a WW1 Passchendaele soldier - Journey’s End. It was a truly amazing production bringing everything alive and reduced many of the students to tears through the portrayal of the horrific experience many of these soldiers would have gone through. Safe to say, by the time we had got back to England the majority of us were incredibly tired but the experience was so incredibly valuable to even begin to understand the This soldier was just eighteen months to two years sacrifice that older than most of our students and this really brought it home to them. was made on our behalf. Next stop on the first afternoon was a visit to the Yorkshire Trench, a preserved and reconstructed 1917 trench with bunkers that the students could move around in. We tried to get them to imagine what it would have been like for the soldiers living in these bunkers, eating, sleeping and going to the toilet, especially when it was cold and raining and the trenches were full of water and how dreadful life must have been for them.

Our last activity of the day was the Menin Gate Last Post Ceremony which takes place every day of the year and has done since 1927 except for a period in WW2 when Ypres was occupied by German Forces. Many adults in the theatre approached us to explain how amazed they were at how well Our students were a complete credit, not behaved out students were over the two even whispering a word, deep in thought and a half hours and were blown away by how taken aback our students were
