1 Georgia Archives Month 2007 Activities Descriptions Magdalene Christian Crowell Collection Opening and Reception • When: October 11, 2007, 4:30 pm • Where: Chestatee Regional Library, Dahlonega Georgia • Cost: Free • Description: The Lumpkin County Library invites the public to a reception to mark the opening of the Magdalene Christian Crowell Collection, an archival collection of family history research materials pertinent to Lumpkin County and surrounding areas in the 19th Century. Light refreshments will be served following a brief program. • For more information: Please Contact: Debra Capponi, 706-864-3668 Ink to Paper: The Craft of Printing Exhibit • When: Oct. 1-31, 2007 • Where: The Kenan Research Center at the Atlanta History Center • Cost: Free • Description: Presenting forty printed documents, the exhibition explains the printing processes used to create illustrations on paper and provide clues to understanding how to recognize and care for historical documents. The exhibition is organized from the collection of Frank O. Walsh • For more information: Please visit www.atlantahistorycenter.com or call 404-814-4000 Memorabilia from Fitzhugh Lee School, Cobb County’s oldest School, (started in 1896) • When: Tues.-Sat., 10-4pm • Where: Smyrna Museum; 2861 Atlanta Road, Smyrna, Georgia • Cost: Admission is free, donations are encouraged. • Description: Exhibit contains Scrapbooks from PTA’s, copies of all the Yearbooks published by the school. Trophies won in conference competitions. Class photos for all years when it was an elementary school. Box 133085, Atlanta, GA 30333. 2 Archival Resourses for Genealogy Research • When: October 20, 2007 10 am- 12 noon • Where: The Kenan Research Center at the Atlanta History Center • Cost: Admission is $10.00 for members of AHC and $15.00 for non members. • Description: Mike Brubaker, Genealogist with The Atlanta History Center will present information on how to use city and county records along with other archival recourses for Genealogy and Family Research. • For more information: Please visit www.atlantahistorycenter.com or call 404-814-4000 Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta • When: October 17, 2007 • Where: Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, 1000 Peachtree Street, Atlanta 30309 • Description: On October 17, particularly fragile items in the Bank's archives will be displayed. These materials date from the early teens of the last century. Preservation materials will be available to employees and instructions on collection care will be offered. Employees are encouraged to bring in their own materials for free consultations with the Bank's archivist, Annie Tilden. Although these Archives Month activities will only be available to Bank employees, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta's Visitors Center and Monetary Museum is open to the public for self-guided tours Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Bank is at 1000 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, Georgia 30309, with directions available at the Visitors Center and Monetary Museum's web site. Writing Our Lives: Diaries, Letters, and Memoirs (Lunch & Learn Lecture) • When: Tuesday, October 9, 2007 • Where: Georgia Archives, 5800 Jonesboro Road, Morrow, Georgia 30260. Driving directions and a map can be found on the Georgia Archives website at www.georgiaarchives.org. • Cost: Parking and admission are free. • Description: Lecturer Valerie Frey will discuss historic personal narratives in terms of their informational and educational value. She will also give tips for those wishing to write for future generations. The Lunch & Learn free monthly lecture series began in 1993 as a way to help the public learn more about Georgia’s rich history and culture. Guest speakers cover a variety of topics on the second Tuesday of each month from noon to 1:00 p.m. You are welcome to bring a lunch or snack to eat during the program. Ferry to Flight—Barnes Field on Sand Bar Ferry Road • When: October 1 – October 31, 2007 • Where: Augusta State University • Cost: Free • Description: Exhibit of 18 photographs taken on Barnes Field in 1913 of aircraft flying out of the Army School of Aviation in Augusta. Types of aircraft include the Wright B and Wright-Burgess Flyer. Dedicated to the memory of Dr. Edward J. Box 133085, Atlanta, GA 30333. 4 • Description: There will be presentations by Mr. Buster Boshears, Executive Director of the Augusta Regional Airport, and Ms. Diane Johnston, the airport’s Marketing Director. The subject of the presentations will cover aviation history in the city and the economic impact of Bush Field on Augusta. The Augusta Richmond County Historical Society will raffle a copy of Dr. Ed Cashin’s book, From Balloons to Blue Angels. • For more information: Carol Waggoner-Angleton at 706-667 4904 Gospel Pilgrim Cemetery: A Lively Subject (Presented by Dr. Al Hester) • When: Sunday, October 21, 3:00 pm • Where: Athens-Clarke County Library auditorium, 2025 Baxter Street Athens, GA 30606 • Cost: Free • Description: East Athens' Gospel Pilgrim Cemetery, founded by African Americans in 1882, has a rich history behind it as African Americans struggled to overcome the effects of slavery and Reconstruction. Dr. Al Hester, head of the history and research committee of the Gospel Pilgrim Cemetery project, will show a DVD highlighting the cemetery's history and then will bring you an up-to-date report on how the cemetery is being restored, to be made available for educational and cultural visits. The cemetery is a vital part of the history of Athens, both black and white. Bring a sweater or light jacket and something to write with. This is the pre-beginning genealogy class. • For more information: 706-613-3650 It's a Lovely Day to Be in Athens: 40 Years of Community Commentary • When: October 1 – 31, 2007 • Where: The exhibit will in the display cabinets outside the Heritage Room on the second floor of the Athens-Clarke County Library, 2025 Baxter Street Athens, GA 30606 • Cost: Free • Description: Everyday for more than 40 years H. Randolph Holder, at WGAU Radio Station here in Athens greeted listeners with the statement "It's a Lovely Day to be in Athens." He commented on current events in the community, the nation, and the world. Upon his death, Clementi Holder donated to the Athens-Clarke County Library’s Heritage Room these commentaries of her late husband and they form the H. Randolph Holder Collection. Box 133085, Atlanta, GA 30333. 5 staff member Theresa Flynn has pulled together an exhibit to illuminate a little of how Athens and Clarke County got to be the way we are. • For more information: 706-613-3650 AAFHRIG (African American Family History Research Interest Group) • When: Monday, October 1st 7:00 p.m. • Where: The meeting will be in the Small Conference Room on first floor of the Athens- Clarke County Library, 2025 Baxter Street Athens, GA 30606 • Cost: Free • Description: This is the fourth quarterly meeting of 2007 of the African American Family History Research Interest Group (AAFHRIG) co-sponsored by Clarke-Oconee Genealogical Society and the Athens-Clarke County Library Heritage Room.
