In Recording History, Peter Martland uses a range of archival sources to trace the genesis and early development of the British record industry from1888 to 1931. A work of economic and cultural history that draws on a vast range of quantitative data, it surveys the commercial and business activities of the British record industry like no other work of recording history has before. Martlands study charts the successes and failures of this industry and its impact on domestic entertainment. Showcasing its many colorful pioneers from both sides of the Atlantic, Recording History is first and foremost an account of The Gramophone Company Ltd, a precursor to todays recording giant EMI, and then the most important British record company active from the late 19th century until the end of the second decade of the twentieth century. Martlands history spans the years from the original inventors through industrial and market formation and final take-offincluding the riveting battle in recording formats. Special attention is given to the impact of the First World War and the that followed in its wake. Scholars of recording history will find in Martlands study the story of the development of the recording studio, of the artists who made the first records (from which some like Italian opera tenor Enrico Caruso earned a fortune), and the change records wrought in the relationship between performer and audience, transforming the reception and appreciation of musical culture.     5 In the Canyon, Revise the Canon Prologue Géraldine Gourbe Revise the Canon The Duty to Remember is Not Sovereign Linda Nochlin has taught me that while a wish to bring certain moments of collective amnesia to general knowledge might admittedly be justifiable, it can paradoxically prove to be counterproductive. Shedding light upon certain veiled practices cannot be envisaged without a critical analysis that can and must acutely consider its own territory. In “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” the author takes a distance from the actions of overexposure and legitimation of veiled knowledge undertaken by her own sisters, who at the time belonged to the Women Art Coalition and the Women’s Art in Revolution groups, the first artist protest groups stemming from the Women’s Liberation Movement. It is therein that lies, in my opinion, her literally revolutionary contribution. From this strategic and discursive deviation, Nochlin names and describes a chain of correlative actions between the emancipation movements that were rapidly expanding in the end of the 1960s on the one hand, and the process of calling into question the Humanities’ epistemological principles on the other. What the North American intellectual saw in these marches and protests was not a blind spot; she rather discerned a disjunctive force, also called, 1 in Michel de Certeau’s words, a founding rupture. This founding rupture is driven by expressions of singularity rubbing and grating against enunciations marked by universality; from then on liberating “questions that were unheard and whose answers were unspoken, that remained to be sought in [...] a labor of 2 common elucidation.” 1.

The road toward cleaner air and a healthier environment. Where two roads diverge . As a first year student at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, Zack Parisa had a vision. He related it to friends on occasion, but mostly this vision sat filed away among other ideas in the back of his mind. This spring, he decided it was now or never. Inspired by the Conference of Governors on Climate Change (held at Yale April 17-18, 2008), Zack picked off the cobwebs and revived the dream. The vision was a collaborative climate change-themed art installation, centered around the concept that Americans face a pivotal choice. They can continue down the road they have been traveling, or they can forge a new path. At this place where two roads diverge, politicians and citizens have the power to choose the ultimate outcome. Over the span of a week and culminating in one final evening's construction, students came together to build two physical roads reflecting their ideas of "best" and "worst" climate change scenarios. Some have arrived at Old Colorado City, southwest of Colorado Springs; some came by way of the Arkansas River, arriving at Fountain City, now part of Pueblo; some arrived in what is now Denver; some arrived far north of Denver, having followed the South Platte River. Many were walking or guiding slow- moving animals. The view to the south from downtown Denver, on a clear day, reveals the magnificent peak, but it is 70 miles away. From Pueblo County, the view northward is nearly as distant, both very impressive walks from Denver, with or without teams of animals.

Chapter 4. 170 ŔeForm Land(scape) Rhizome ‘Let us summarize the principal characteristics of a rhizome: unlike trees or their roots, the rhizome connects any point to any other point, and its traits are not necessarily linked to traits of the same nature; it brings into play very different regimes of signs, and even non-sign states. The rhizome is reducible to neither the One nor the multiple. It is not the One that becomes two or even directly three, four, five etc. It is not a multiple derived from the one, or to which one is added (n+1). It is comprised not of units but of dimensions, or rather directions in motion. It has neither beginning nor end, but always a middle (milieu) from which it grows and which it overspills. It constitutes linear multiplicities with n dimensions having neither subject nor object, which can be laid out on a plane of consistency, and from which the Land(scape) one is always subtracted (n-1). When a multiplicity of this kind changes dimension, it necessarily changes in nature as well, undergoes a metamorphosis. Unlike a structure, which is defined by a set of points and positions, the rhizome is made only of lines; lines of segmentarity and stratification as its dimensions, and the line of flight or deterritorialization as the maxi- mum dimension after which the multiplicity undergoes metamorphosis, changes in nature.
