  • Phylogenetic Relationships of Freshwater Fishes of the Genus Capoeta (Actinopterygii, Cyprinidae) in Iran
Received: 3 May 2016 | Revised: 8 August 2016 | Accepted: 9 August 2016 DOI: 10.1002/ece3.2411 ORIGINAL RESEARCH Phylogenetic relationships of freshwater fishes of the genus Capoeta (Actinopterygii, Cyprinidae) in Iran Hamid Reza Ghanavi | Elena G. We used mitochondrial history to examine diversity of the Hamid Reza Ghanavi, Department of algae- scraping cyprinid Capoeta in Iran, applying the species- delimiting approaches Biology, Lund University, Lund, Sweden. Email: [email protected] General Mixed Yule- Coalescent (GMYC) and Poisson Tree Process (PTP) as well as haplotype network analyses. Using the BEAST program, we also examined temporal divergence patterns of Capoeta. The monophyly of the genus and the existence of three previously described main clades (Mesopotamian, Anatolian- Iranian, and Aralo- Caspian) were confirmed. However, the phylogeny proposed novel taxonomic findings within Capoeta. Results of GMYC, bPTP, and phylogenetic analyses were similar and suggested that species diversity in Iran is currently underestimated. At least four can- didate species, Capoeta sp4, Capoeta sp5, Capoeta sp6, and Capoeta sp7, are awaiting description. Capoeta capoeta comprises a species complex with distinct genetic line- ages. The divergence times of the three main Capoeta clades are estimated to have occurred around 15.6–12.4 Mya, consistent with a Mio- Pleistocene origin of the di- versity of Capoeta in Iran. The changes in Caspian Sea levels associated with climate fluctuations and geomorphological events such as the uplift of the Zagros and Alborz Mountains may account for the complex speciation patterns in Capoeta in Iran.

Central Iran is a region with high number of endemism in other freshwater fish species, though the present species was recognized as C. aculeata (Valenciennes, 1844), widely distributed within Kavir and Namak basins. However previous phylogenetic and phylogeographic studies found that populations of Nam River, a tributary of the Hableh River in central Iran are different from the other species. In this study, the mentioned population is described as a new species based on morphologic and genetic characters. Keywords: Inland freshwater of Iran, Nam River, Algae-scraping cyprinid, Capoeta. Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.49; G6PD) is an important enzyme found in all mammal tissues, and produces NADPH in the metabolism. NADPH provides a reductive potential to maintain a balanced redox state within the cell. The aim of this study was to purify G6PD from Capoeta umbla kidney and determination of inhibition or activation effects of aluminium and mercury on enzyme activity. In this purpose, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase was purified from Capoeta umbla kidney by using preparation of homogenate, ammonium sulphate precipitation and 2’,5’-ADP Sepharose 4B affinity chromatography. Molecular weight of the enzyme was determined on sodium dodecyl sulphate- polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and the purified enzyme showed a single band on the 3+ 2+ gel with a molecular weight of 75 kDa. Moreover, Ki constants of Al and Hg were found as 0.98 ± 0.084 and 0.57 ± 0.019 mM, respectively.

After GPA (General Procrustes Analysis) performed, ANOVA (Analysis of Variance), PCA (Principal Component Analysis), CVA (Canonical Variance Anlysis) and DFA (Discriminant Function Analysis) analysis were conducted by MorphoJ and PAST. In CV (Canonical Variance) Analysis, the permutation p-value of the mahalanobis and procrustes distance between the two species (p<.0001) shows that the difference is quite significant. As a result of the reclassification done by the analysis, we see that 79% of C. umbla and 77% of C. trutta are classified correctly. • ORIGINAL ARTICLES an Etymological Review on Fish Common
412 Research Journal of Fisheries and Hydrobiology, 6(4): 412-423, 2011 ISSN 1816-9112 ORIGINAL ARTICLES An etymological review on fish common and scientific names in the Euphrates and Tigris 1Peyman Mikaili, 2Jalal Shayegh 1Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine, Urmia University of Medical Sciences, Urmia, Iran. 2Department of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary, Shabestar branch, Islamic Azad University, Shabestar, Iran. ABSTRACT As the Mesopotamia has a long history of fishery, the etymological analysis of currently used fish names may have interesting motifs for other scientific fields. Because of some recent political factors, fewer studies have been conducted on the aquatic fauna in Iraq. Additionally, native and local studies will be not recognized and understood without having a clear knowledge about the local fish names. As some of these words have been deformed and almost of them are far variants from the standard or original forms, we have use etymology for elucidating the Arabic names. Of all species presented in the available sources, 46 species were selected for this study. All names, including scientific (Greek and Latin) and common Arabic names in Iraqi dialects were etymologically analyzed. For etymology of Arabic words, we had not, in fact, any real pattern for the methodology of Arabic words. Thus, we may consider this article, one of the first works deals with this field of international scientific terminology. We have proposed a so-called methodology for Arabic etymology, and then we have presented the suggestions for word etymologies. Key words: Etymology, scientific names, common names, Iraq, Persian Gulf, ichthyology Introduction The Mesopotamia may be considered as one of the first fishery regions in the ancient history of human being.

The group is characterised by adult males of most species developing filament-like extensions to the branched dorsal-fin rays and the distinctive ontogenic colour pattern of three black bars on the side of the body. Puntius singhala (Duncker), P. arulius (Jerdon), P. srilankensis (Senanayake) and P. tambraparniei (Silas) are considered valid species within this group. The name Puntius assimilis (Jerdon), hitherto in the synonymy of P. filamentosus, is re-validated and P. lepidus Day, and P. maderaspatensis (Jerdon) are treated as junior synonyms of P. assimilis and P. filamentosus, respectively. A new species, P. exclamatio, is described from the Kallada River, southern Kerala State; adults of this species differ from all other Indian and Sri Lankan Cyprinidae by their unique colour pattern: a black blotch 2–3 scales wide commencing on and above scale 6 or 7 of lateral-line series; and another horizontally-elongate, black, tear-shaped blotch about 1½ scales high commencing on lateral line slightly anterior to or above anal-fin origin, on about lateral-line scale row 13 and continuing to base of caudal fin.

  • Comparative Morphology and Interspecific Relationships of the Cyprinid Genus Puntius
Japanese Journal of Ichthyology 魚 類 学 雑 誌 Vol.l.25,No.11978 25巻1号1978年 Comparative Morphology and Interspecific Relationships of the Cyprinid Genus Puntius Yasuhiko Taki,Akari Katsuyama and Tousei Urushido (Received November 22,1977) Abstract Interspecific relationships were investigated in 23 species of the cyprinid genus Puntius on the basis of the features of infraorbital bones ,pharyngeal bones and their teeth, lateral folds and barbels on the snout ,and color pattern.Six phyletic groups were recognized in these fishes. In general, species belonging to the same group have overlapped or about equal geographic distributions.Between Southeast Asian and Indo-Ceylonese groups a more or less distinct gap is found in the degree of development of lateral folds and barbels . The results of this study indicate that Bleeker's(1863)division of Puntius into the subgenera Puntius,Barbodes and Capoeta is not acceptable from a phylogenetic viewpoint . catalogue number(in the case of catalogued Introduction specimen)are given in order. E-mail: [email protected] 3Corresponding author. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The order Cypriniformes is the most diverse order of freshwater fishes. Recent phylogenetic studies have approached a consensus on the phylogenetic relationships of Cypriniformes and proposed a new phylogenetic classification of family- level groupings in Cypriniformes. The lack of a reference for the placement of genera amongst families has hampered the adoption of this phylogenetic classification more widely. We herein provide an updated compilation of the membership of genera to suprageneric taxa based on the latest phylogenetic classifications. We propose a new taxon: subfamily Esom- inae within Danionidae, for the genus Esomus. Key words: Cyprinidae, Cobitoidei, Cyprinoidei, carps, minnows Introduction The order Cypriniformes is the most diverse order of freshwater fishes, numbering over 4400 currently recognized species (Eschmeyer & Fong 2017), and the species are of great interest in biology, economy, and in culture. Occurring throughout North America, Africa, Europe, and Asia, cypriniforms are dominant members of a range of freshwater habitats (Nelson 2006), and some have even adapted to extreme habitats such as caves and acidic peat swamps (Romero & Paulson 2001; Kottelat et al.
