Padre’s Corner March 3, 2019 Eight Sunday in Ordinary Time Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta continues to teach us valuable life lessons through her stories and words of spiritual wisdom. "I will never forget the day I was walking down a street in London and saw a man sitting all alone, looking so terribly lonely. I walked up to him and I took his hand and shook it. And he exclaimed: "Oh, after so long, this is the first time I've felt the warmth of a human hand." And then his face brightened up. He was a different being. He felt that there was somebody who really wanted him, somebody who really cared. I never realized before that such a small action could bring so much joy." Whenever I perform a baptism in the name of God, my afterthoughts to the family gathered is the powerful transformation of the babies soul that takes place during those few seconds of water poured on their head. His power not mine. "I can't bear being photographed but I make use of everything for the glory of God. When I allow a person to take a photograph, I tell Jesus to take one soul to Heaven out of Purgatory... I think the world today is upside down. Everybody seems to be in such a terrible rush, anxious for greater development and greater riches and so on. There is much suffering because there is so very little love in homes and in family life. We have no time for our children, we have no time for each other; there is no time to enjoy each other. In the home begins the disruption of the peace of the world." During the three times I met Mother Teresa in 1994, at the Missionaries of Charity convent in Harlem, I knew well her discomfort at being photographed. Thankfully she did not feel the same way about giving autographs. We all need to slow down and appreciate life. "A Brazilian gentleman who held a high position, wrote to me that he had lost total faith in God and in man, and he had given up everything, and only wanted to commit suicide. One day, passing by a shop, his eyes had suddenly fallen on the TV and there was a scene from the Home for the Dying in Kalighat ( India ) - the Sisters looking after the sick and the dying. He wrote to me after seeing that scene that for the first time after many years he knelt down and prayed. Now he has decided to turn back to God and have faith in humanity because he saw that God still loves the world and he saw this on TV. My TV is the tabernacle." When I had breakfast alone with this future saint twice in 1994, I conveyed some of the struggles being gone through as a young priest. Those struggles never disappear. She told me to remember her in the Mass Chalice. Our times wickedly allow for the destruction of the unborn child. Saint Mother Teresa was courageous on this issue, even when speaking before powerful world leaders. "We must not be surprised when we hear of murders, of killings, of wars, of hatred. If a mother can kill her own child, what is left for us to kill each other... By abortion, the mother kills even her own child to solve her problems. And, by abortion, the father is told that he does not have to take any responsibility at all for the child he has brought into the world. That father is likely to put other women into the same trouble. So abortion leads to abortion. Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love but to use violence to get what they want. This is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion." This is why I often refer to this issue in homilies. Thoroughly convinced that this incredible Saint will guide our two churches here in the City of Newburgh into a solid spiritual future, I conclude with this second century homily from an underground house church during the days when Christianity was illegal. Emperor Constantine legalized the Church in the fourth century. In closing, these thoughts from the tomb of this courageous priest: "Let us be sure that when the day of judgment comes, our place will be among those who give thanks to God and have served Him, and not with the ungodly who face condemnation. As for myself, I am only a sinner, not yet beyond the reach of temptation; but even amidst all the devil's machinations, I will strive to make progress and hope to attain at least some virtue, for I fear the judgment that awaits me." We all need God's mercy and love.
