Costumes and props are definitely allowed. Please feel free to be as creative as you'd like! John Patrick Power Memorial Special- Comp. #850 Open to all championship dancers. Requirements- One contemporary set dance at a different time signature from the one competed in championships. The winner of this special will receive the John Patrick Power perpetual trophy. Art- Competition #1010 Must have an Irish Theme. All medium/ forms of art accepted. All art must be turned in by Saturday at noon. Traditional Irish tunes not to exceed 3 minutes. Open to musicians who have been playing less than a year and have not placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in a music competition. Intermediate Instrumental- Three contrasting tunes not to exceed 5 minutes Ensemble- 2 or more musicians and Vocalists playing together one song or two contrasting tunes not to exceed 4-5 min. All ages welcome. No age groups for the ensemble competition. The Feis committee reserves the right to combine or split competitions as necessary. Who are the Trinity Irish Dance Company? Trinity Irish Dance Company were formed in 1990 by Mark Howard in an effort to showcase Irish music and dance as an art form. The company is made up of 18- 25 year olds, and has received great critical and popular acclaim from audiences throughout the world. They have performed all over the world, and have collaborated with many notable contemporary choreographers and musicians. Trinity holds a unique place in the dance world, offering a highly skilled presenation of progressive Irish step dance. Who is Mark Howard? Mark Howard is the founder and artistic director of the Trinity Irish Dance Company, and choreographs much of the company’s work. Born in Yorkshire, England, and raised in Chicago, Mark Howard began dancing at the age of nine, and later went on to become a North American champion Irish dancer. He started the Trinity Academy of Irish Dance at the age of 17, and dancers from this school have won 18 world titles for the United States at the World Irish Dance Championships in Ireland. Howard wanted to find a way for his dancers to do more than just compete for tropies and prizes, so in 1990 he founded the Trinity Irish Dance Company as a way to showcase Irish music and dances as an art form. Mark Howard continues to choregraph new works for the company, and he has expanded his independent career to work in theater, television, concert and film.

The older dance styles that were created in the 1970s include up-rock, breaking, and the funk styles. At the same time breaking was developing in New York, other styles were being created in California. Several street dance styles created in California in the 1970s such as roboting, bopping, hitting, locking, bustin', popping, electric boogaloo, strutting, sac-ing, and dime-stopping. It is historically inaccurate to say that the funk styles were always considered hip-hop. "Hip-Hop Dance" became an umbrella term encompassing all of these styles. Tempo of the Music: Tempo: 27 - 28 bars per minute (108 - 112 beats per minute) Characteristics and Movement: Different new dance styles, such as Quick Popping Crew, Asian style, African style, Hype Dance, New-Jack-Swing, Popping & Locking, Jamming, etc., adding creative elements such as stops, jokes, flashes, swift movements, etc. Some Electric and Break movements can be performed but should not dominate. Floor figures are very popular but should not dominate the performance.
