Big news this month is the passing of Dr. Bruce Elving. We’ve devoted our cover this month to Bruce and you’ll read more about Bruce in this issue. One item that I’ve not seen reported anywhere is the fact that Brucey not only edited an FM column for DX Horizons magazine, but for many years was FM News editor for the WTFDA, and if you look at his old columns in the VUD you will see that he carried on the format into his FMedia newsletter. Bruce didn’t just have a love for FM, it was more like a passion. I don’t know if anyone with that passion exists anymore. When I wrote last month that you could expect delays in receiving your paper VUDs, I wasn’t thinking about hurricanes at the time. But Irene has her sights on Southern New England. My antennas are down and we’re doing what we have to do to ride out the storm. I would imagine the power will go out at some point and we will be out of action for a while. Those members who read the eVUD will probably see their magazine long before our paper readers will. This month we welcome Johnny Rogers to the club. John is N4JDR and lives in Silver Creek, GA. Welcome Johnny! We’re glad to see you come back for another year! Ralph Strobel writes “This has been a pathetic E-skip season. Even though it’s 100 degrees here now, no trop at all as in previous years. I was in Couer d’Alene, Idaho June 23-28 as my brother and his wife had a 50th wedding anniversary party. Andy Bolin said I didn’t miss much…” Ralph also mentioned that he was gone from July 5 through the 10th and was told that there was no Es back in Indiana during those times. Michael Levintow (D.C.) writes about the conversion from paper to electronic VUD. Michael says the club needs a paper publication but he would stay a member if we offer the eVUD. He makes some compelling arguments for keeping the paper VUD, some of which I agree with, believe it or not. However, reality returns and smacks us in the head. Publishing an online e-zine is not that much work. Publishing a paper magazine is work and we haven’t had any serious volunteers to take on the job. I really don’t want to beat the horse to death here again. But I will say that some of the columns are printed in 8 point type or 9 point type to keep the formatting correct. I’m 65 with bi-focals and I have a tough time sometimes reading this stuff myself! If I blow up the eVUD to 115% then I can read anything easily. And my eyes thank me for doing it! I will say that this column looks light-years better when viewed on a monitor than when attempting to read the paper version. Doug discovered the same about his column TV News when he began receiving the e-zine. There’s no comparison. But some will never believe me. See you in 30! 2 Douglas E.     The M Street Journal Radio's Journal of Record ' EW YORK NASHVILLE CAPSTAR ACROSS AFRICA. Capstar Broadcasting Partners will spend $60 million for twenty stations in four separate transactions covering five markets. Terms of the individual deals weren't disclosed. Two of the deals involve Point Communications, which is the managing partner of six stations in Madison, WI and owns five in the Roanoke - Lynchburg area, owned through a subsidiary. In Madison, the stations are standards WTSO; CHR WZEE; news -talk WIBA; rock WIBA -FM; new rock WMAD -FM, Sun Prairie, WI; and soft AC WMLI, Sauk City, WI. In Roanoke - Lynchburg -- oldies simulcast WLDJ, Appomattox and WRDJ, Roanoke; urban oldies WJJS, Lynchburg; and dance combo WJJS -FM, Vinton, and WJJX, Lynchburg. The third deal gives Capstar three stations in the Yuma, AZ market, including oldies KBLU, country KTTI, and classic rocker KYJT, from Commonwealth Broadcasting of Arizona, LLC. Finally, COMCO Broadcasting's Alaska properties, which include children's KYAK, CHR KGOT, and AC KYMG, all Anchorage; and news -talk KIAK, country KIAK -FM, and AC KAKQ -FM, all Fairbanks. WE DON'T NEED NO STINKIN' LICENSE . It's spent almost ten weeks on the air without a license, but the new religious -programmed station on 105.3 MHz in the Hartford, CT area, is being investigated by the Commission's New England Field Office. According to the Hartford Courant, Mark Blake is operating the station from studios in Bloomfield, CT, and says that he "stands behind" the station's operation. Although there have been no interference complaints filed, other stations in the area are claiming they are losing advertising dollars to the pirate.
