La Périchole (July 18) by Kelly Ferjutz Ohio Light Opera: Offenbach’s La Périchole (July 18) by Kelly Ferjutz You’ve heard of “screwball comedies,” right? Well, here’s your chance to see a screwball comedy disguised as an operetta. The sumptuous music is by the German-French master, Jacques Offenbach, and features a sparkling new English translation by OLO’s Jacob Allen. The original French libretto from 1868 is by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. Offenbach wrote nearly 100 operettas from the 1850s–1870s, on more than a dozen of which Meilhac collaborated, while Halévy assisted on more than twenty. Today, only half a dozen or so are still in the active repertoire. When the widowed Viceroy, Don Andrès, sees a street singer, La Périchole, he immediately decides to add her to his court as a lady-in-waiting. However, to fill that position she must be married, so the Don sets out to find her a husband. His men bring in their candidate: a drunken Piquillo, who is in reality her singing partner and lover. He doesn’t recognize her, and from this episode comes one of the most lovely and famous arias of all time –– “The Letter Song,” in which La Périchole assures Piquillo of her constant love. The marriage takes place, after which poor Piquillo is then sent to the dungeon for recalcitrant husbands! This is OLO’s third production of La Périchole during the company’s 40-year history. The sprightly stage direction is by Julie Wright Costa, and the brilliantly colorful costumes by Kim Griffin reflect the sunny climate of Lima, Peru, where the action takes place in a slightly nebulous time-frame. (It could be anytime between 1868 and now.) Conductor Wilson Southerland kept the musical pacing alert and attentive, with choreography by Spencer Reese. Kiah Kayser created the multi-faceted set, highlighted by the lighting of Brittany Shemuga. Spiro Matsos excelled as the Marquis de Tarapote, chamberlain of the viceroy, and why wouldn’t he? In addition to this year, Matsos has performed the role for OLO in 1984 and 1993. Runner-up is the suitably lascivious Boyd Mackus who played Don Andrès this year and in 1984. (In 1993 he appeared as Piquillo.) Gretchen Windt, in the title role, could hardly be blamed for accepting the Don’s offer, plus she then gets to sing “The Letter Song” to her erstwhile lover, Piquillo (Daniel Neer). Ted Christopher and Stephen Faulk were cast as noblemen, while the The Three Cousins Tavern was under the capable management of Chelsea Miller (Guadalena), Caitlin Ruddy (Berginella), and Alexa Devlin (Mastrilla). Cory Clines did double duty as Assistant Stage Director and the Old Prisoner. The two notaries who formalize the marriage were Seth Johnson and Trevor Todd. La Périchole is now in repertory through August 9 at Freedlander Theatre on the campus of The College of Wooster. Photos by Matt Dilyard. In this ground-breaking book, Derek B. Scott examines the cultural transfer of operetta from the German stage to Britain and the USA and offers a historical and critical survey of these operettas and their music. In the period 1900–1940, over sixty operettas were produced in the West End, and over seventy on Broadway. A study of these stage works is important for the light they shine on a variety of social topics of the period – from modernity and gender relations to new technology and new media – and these are investigated in the individual chapters. This book is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core at doi.org/10.1017/9781108614306. derek b. scott is Professor of Critical Musicology at the University of Leeds.

  • The Cosmopolitan Realism of Offenbach's La Vie Parisienne
Writing the City: The Cosmopolitan Realism of Offenbach’s La Vie parisienne Jacek Blaszkiewicz As the curtain of Paris’s Théâtre du Palais Royal rose on October 31, 1866, spectators saw before them a mise-en-scène unprecedented in the city’s operatic history: a railway station—specifically the Gare de l’Ouest, one of Paris’s newest and busiest. A chorus marches onto the stage, announc- ing that they are the employees of the Ligne de l’Ouest rail company. Against an aggressive triple-meter orchestral accompaniment, the workers list off the names of the French cities and towns served by the company: Conflans, Triel, Poissy, Barentin, Pavilly, Vernon, Bolbec, etc. This list is doubly humorous. First, it captures the mechanical repetitiveness of the ever-expanding French railway system, rendered musically through an eleven-measure dominant prolongation in Bb major. Second, it pokes fun at mass-produced travel literature aimed specifically at tourists; the chorus, in essence, sings a version of the itineraries found in Lehaguez’s Le Nouveau paris: guide à l’étranger, a popular guidebook series that contained endless pages of station names in miniscule typescript. The workersfollow this list with a second: an account of various professional tasks, such as selling tickets and newspapers, opening and closing gates, and signaling incom- ing and outgoing rail traffic. These two lists are repeated twice, before the employees march off the stage, presumably back to work. The employees’ exit concludes the first vocal number of La Vie parisi- enne, an opéra-bouffe by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy with music by Jacques Offenbach.

  • Christopher Columbus
CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS Music by Jacques Offenbach: book and lyrics by Don White: score compiled and edited by Patric Schmid SYNOPSIS This is the sort of operetta Offenbach might have written and uses much of the music he had intended for a work for America, together with other gems that lie hidden in unperformed Offenbach scores. The racy, witty and brilliantly zany story concerns the amorous adventures of the polygamous Columbus, who, against his will, is sent across the sea pursued by three wives and a fiancée to find the riches of the Indies. He unwittingly comes across an even greater treasure in the shape of a Cola nut, thus discovering not only a new world but one of America's greatest treasures, Coca Cola! Although not an adaptation, this work has been performed successfully by amateurs and is suitable for companies who perform opera or prefer original versions. THE STORY ACT ONE A Square in Cordova in 1492. The young ladies of Cordova, bored with snapping their castanets, shouting 'Ole', are delighted when Beatriz tells them she is engaged. The object of her affections, Christopher Columbus, explains to the young men of the town that he has discovered the art of seduction - marriage. We soon discover it is an art he has been practising all over Europe, for his past catches up with him in the shape of Rosa, Fleurette and Gretel, wives he has wooed, won and walked out on in Italy, France and Switzerland. Columbus tries to hide from this trio of termagents in the middle of a demonstration organised by the Round Earth Society, led by Luis de Torres.
