Stylt and Niehku Mountain Villa in Riksgränsen, Sweden, wins the 2019 UNESCO Prix Versailles. Jun 26, 2019 20:59 UTC UNESCO awards Stylt for Arctic dream hotel Swedish design agency Stylt wins the 2019 UNESCO Prix Versailles for Europe’s best hotel interior design. The award goes to Niehku Mountain Villa in the small village Riksgränsen in northern Sweden. As a continental winner, Stylt’s project is automatically nominated to compete for the World Title. Niehku (which means “dream” in Northern Sami) is a 14-room adventure base and luxe lodge 124 miles north of the Arctic Circle, just at the border between Sweden and Norway. Built upon the site of an old train roundhouse at the legendary iron ore train line, Niehku Mountain Villa incorporates a long and unique history into its spectacular yet rustic interior design and architecture. Complete with 14 exclusive double rooms, a 500-bottle wine cellar and a tundra-to-table restaurant, Niehku offers to heli-ski from its doorstep with access to 60 skiable mountain peaks. The place is run by two ex-ski bums; a ski patroller turned international mountain guide, and a ski racer turned award-winning sommelier. The UNESCO Prix Versailles focuses on commercial architecture, with the aim to shine light on the intersection between creation, art, and economics. It awards hotels and restaurants, shops and stores around the world that are found to be particularly remarkable, from a perspective of exterior architecture and interior design. In 2017, Stylt was awarded the World Special Prize at Prix Versailles for best interior design for Spedition Hotel in Thun, Switzerland. The 2019 World Awards Ceremony will be held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris in September.
