The manufacturer of the axle and the truck or trailer is frequently not the same. The axle manufacturer and their model or code can generally be found in one of the following locations: MOST MEDIUM-DUTY TRUCKS: The vehicle option tag can be found in the glove box MOST HEAVY-DUTY TRUCK DRIVE AND TRAILER AXLES: A tag with the required information is attached to the axle or axle housing itself MOST STEERING AND TAG AXLES: The information is usually cast directly into the axle tube itself Once the necessary axle manufacturer and that manufacturer’s code or model is obtained turn to page 1 of the catalog. Every axle manufacturer is listed in the following sequence: 1. Trailer, Tag and Pusher Axles 2. Front Axles 3. Drive Axles Within each of these sections is a listing of each axle manufacturer in alphabetical order. Once the axle manufacturer is located you will find a manufacturer’s model or code number and weight capacity listed with a specific catalog line number and page number. Go to the page number specified and look for the specific line number to find the products you need. Because the I.D. tags may no longer be on the vehicle or the original axle may have been changed, the catalog also features part number interchanges from the most popular OEM and competitor’s part numbers to the equivalent Oil Bath Seal. In the case of the wheel end bearings, industry standard part numbers are generally used and are the same regardless of manufacturer. IV IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS ALWAYS CONSULT THE MOST CURRENT PARTS CATALOG AND SUPPLEMENTS FOR PARTS INFORMATION If this parts catalog is more than two years old, contact your local distributor to ensure you have the most up-to-date parts catalog. DESTROY ALL PREVIOUS Editions and supplements of this catalog This parts catalog replaces all previous editions. See catalog cover for supersession dates. BEFORE INSTALLING ANY PART LISTED IN THIS PARTS CATALOG, CONSULT THE APPROPRIATE VEHICLE MANUFACTURER’S INSTRUCTION MANUAL FOR INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS This catalog contains parts information only. Before installing any of the parts Referenced in this catalog ALWAYS consult the appropriate vehicle Manufacturer’s instruction manual for detailed installation instructions. • The Achilles Heel That Wasn't
Issue 91 – June, 2010 THE ACHILLES HEEL THAT WASN’T The Silver Shadow as most of us know was the Factory’s first real sortie into the Brave New World. Sales of the staid but beautiful Cloud and ‘S’ series cars were falling through competition from much less expensive vehicles who through the impetus of technical development that was burgeoned by the Second World War were able to offer everything that Rolls-Royce could fit to their cars. The American market was finally recognized as the Company’s salvation. No longer could they rely on beautiful tasteful finishes quiet engines and sumptuous rides to keep the bottom line healthy. The vee eight engine that was jammed into the Cloud chassis greatly improved performance but then they had to have noisier clocks! By then the ancient ‘Jerkomatic’ transmission as it is fondly known in other circles, was retired after some 15 years service to be replaced by the pan-automotive transmission the GM400 a three speed that enjoyed production numbers in the millions; but providing a means of communicating with the unit was a challenge. The transition from a floor mounted change lever for the last of a long line of manual gearboxes to a lever on the steering column was indeed a quantum leak. By then millions of vehicles around the world had, for over half a century got by with a central 1230 change speed lever that was stuffed through the lid of the box and worked very well. One drawback was engaging low gear with a reserved lady in the centre of the front seat which could present some embarrassing situations but they were not a major consideration.
