Alberto Lombardero Caparrós Dipòsit Legal: T 1588-2015 ABSTRACT This doctoral thesis surveys the historiography of English Language Teaching (ELT) at a national level. In particular, from the standpoint of grammar and dictionary production in Spain since its origins back in 1769 until 1900. Chapter one deals with the varied theoretical approaches to a historiography of foreign language teaching as well as the methodology and objectives of this thesis. Chapter two provides a global overview of the evolution of grammars and dictionaries from the invention of printing to the mid-eighteenth century in Europe. Special attention is paid to English grammars and dictionaries aimed at the Spanish people. Chapter three focuses on the specific period object of study in this thesis, between 1769 and 1900, from a threefold perspective: socio- cultural and political aspects, educational legislation, and an analysis of the different foreign language teaching methods followed in Spain. Chapter four represents a novelty since it provides, for the first time, a corpus of all the English grammars and dictionaries published in Spain between 1769 and 1900. Furthermore, it also includes two further corpora in order to get a broader picture of ELT in Spain: a corpus of grammars and dictionaries published outside Spain and aimed at the Spanish peolple and a corpus of English manuals other than grammars and dictionaries published in Spain or abroad and written by Spaniards. Chapter five delves into the the history of grammar and dictionary production in Spain by carrying out a thorough synchronic study of two representative grammars and dictionaries respectively. Eventually, chapter six deals with the final conclusions as well as the future lines of research derived from this thesis. The drop in Spanish wine sales is primarily due to the closure of the hospitality and tourism sectors in response to the COVID-19 crisis. Average prices for Spanish wine are also expected to decline. The Ministry of Agriculture implemented a set of extraordinary measures to alleviate the pandemic’s negative impact on the Spanish wine sector and to avoid a surplus of wine during the upcoming season. With the end of the Spanish State of Alarm and the reopening of nonessential activities, Spanish industry observers expect the wine sector to rebound. THIS REPORT CONTAINS ASSESSMENTS OF COMMODITY AND TRADE ISSUES MADE BY USDA STAFF AND NOT NECESSARILY STATEMENTS OF OFFICIAL U.S. GOVERNMENT POLICY General information According to EU official data, in 2019/20, Spain produced 38,100 thousand hectoliters (HL) of wine including grape must, a 23 percent drop from the previous market year and 11 percent below the five- year average. The planted area to vineyards stood at around 902,000 hectares, a two percent decline from the previous period and 1.7 percent below the five-year average. Spain leads the area planted with organic vineyards in the EU with 113,412 hectares. There are about 4,300 wineries in Spain, 75 percent of which are export oriented.

    ABSTRACT Literary Critique of Female Identity under Spain’s Francoist Dictatorship in Nada and Entre visillos Julia Castillo Director: Frieda Blackwell, Ph. D. Two works by female authors during the Francoist dictatorship in Spain––Nada, published in 1945, and Entre visillos, published in 1957––use double discourse to critique society through their expression of female identity. Carmen Laforet and Carmen Martín Gaite worked past censorship to articulate an alternate vision of female identity formation to the policies of the Francoist dictatorship which articulated a limited role for women. The framework offered by these books’ historical and literary contexts allows for a detailed analysis of each work individually. Andrea, the main character of Nada, discovers her identity during a tumultuous year with her family in Barcelona, its description shaped by the tremendismo literary movement. Entre visillos, published in the next decade, uses the technique of neorealismo to portray the lives of various young women and men in a provincial capital, with the character Natalia playing a critical role. As each book is an example of the bildüngsroman, identity formation is paramount. Nada and Entre visillos, through their different time periods and literary styles, present their female characters’ struggles to develop their own identities in a repressive society. We have installed several new facilities: a liquefier plant to produce liquid Helium from the recovered gas, a new STEM microscope, a roll to roll nanoimprint pilot plant for the production of nanostructured functional surfaces and a new Joule-Thompson STM which can go down to a temperature of 800 mK with 3 Teslas applied magnetic field. The scientific production of the Institute has reached 200 papers/ year with an accumulated number of citations of the order of 18000 and a healthy parabolic increase with time. The institutional h index at the end of 2016 was 61. In terms of financial support we have reached the point of getting 2/3 of our budget from external, competitive sources, with only 1/3 coming directly from the administration. This figure, unprecedented for Spanish institutions, demonstrate that we are very competitive, but at the same time, places us in a somewhat fragile situation, since we are too dependent on continuing this extraordinary success rate in external projects. That is why we should prepare ourselves to try and secure stable funding in the next future through programs such as the Severo Ochoa call for Centers of Excellence.
