It is well-known that Schoenberg’s entire biography is coloured by his oppositional ■ Iorientation towards music critics and criticism: indeed, the title of this article comes Fine Arts and Humanities from Schoenberg’s (1909b/1975) bellicose essay, ‘About Music Criticism’, in which University of Alberta he damns those Viennese critics who prejudge music and who even disrupt or seek Augustana Campus to have performances stopped before a work can have a fair hearing. Over the 4901-46 Avenue course of his professional life, Schoenberg responded to critics and criticism in a number of different ways. First, he fired back, writing letters and essays defending his Camrose, Alberta music but also challenging not only the credentials of critics but the very institution Canada T4V 2R3 of music criticism itself. Second, he painted, literally painted, music critics in rather unflattering terms, representing on canvas what he considered their worst qualities in a series of amateur expressionistic paintings from the early part of the twentieth [email protected] century. Most importantly, Schoenberg also penned what I would consider his own music criticism: offering prescriptions for performance and interpretation, proposing a process for journalistic music criticism, musing on musical aesthetics generally and writing critical essays on the significance of specific composers. -

Its multiple definitions cover one another in such a way as to generate what they seek to describe. My thesis tracks the ways in which noise can be understood historically and theoretically. I begin with the Skandalkonzert that took place in Vienna in 1913. I then extend this historical example into a theoretical reading of the noise of Derrida’s Of Grammatology, arguing that sound and noise are the unheard of his text, and that Derrida’s thought allows us to hear sound studies differently. Writing on sound must listen to the noise of the motion of différance, acknowledge the failings, fading, and flailings of sonic discourse, and so keep in play the aporias that constitute the field of sound itself. -

Signed __________________ Áine Heneghan March 2006 Summary of the Dissertation Tradition as Muse: Schoenberg's Musical Morphology and Nascent Dodecaphony by Áine Heneghan The University of Dublin Trinity College March 2006 This study reappraises the evolution of Arnold Schoenberg's method of composing with twelve tones by examining the interrelationship of his theoretical writings and compositional practice. Premised on the idea that theory and practice were interdependent for Schoenberg, I argue, on the one hand, that the richness and diversity of his nascent dodecaphony can be fully appreciated only in the context of the development of his musical thought and, on the other hand, that his terminological concepts—for example, Grundgestalt, 'unfolding' [Abwicklung], the distinction between Satz and Periode (sentence and period), and the differentiation of 'stable' and 'loose' construction—came about precisely because of his compositional experiments during the early 1920s. THE PROBLEMATICS OF PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE PRIMARY CLASS TEACHER AND THE VISITING MUSICIAN: POWER AND HIERARCHY IN THE PURSUIT OF DIALOGIC RELATIONSHIP JULIA SUZANNE PARTINGTON A thesis submitted to Newcastle University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Arts and Cultures Newcastle University March 2017 Abstract Conceived in response to earlier research confirming the consistent and long-standing trend of low musical confidence among primary school teachers in the United Kingdom, this study examines the concept of partnership between class teachers and visiting musicians within the primary music classroom. From the dual perspectives of music educator and ethnographic researcher, I investigate dynamics of power and hierarchy present within the primary class teacher and visiting ‘specialist’ musician relationship, which is a typical aspect of current music education teaching practice. Using Christopher Small’s concept of musicking, issues of expertise, talent or giftedness, musical identity, musical confidence and power within the teacher/musician relationship are closely examined. In turn, through study of a programme of collegial classroom musicking, I seek to trial and propose a specific model of dialogic partnership for music education within the primary school that aims to disrupt the continuing cycle of low musical confidence among primary teachers which, in turn, affects their attitudes to teaching music and to their perceptions of musicality among the children whom they are teaching. ii Dedicated to the memories of my Grandmothers, Ivy Rose Trenholm and Gwendoline Eva Regan. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank Dr Felicity Laurence for her consistent support, guidance and encouragement as I have worked towards completion of this thesis. -

Master Thesis Laptop as a musical instrument: A case study of teachers’ practices, perceptions and legitimation Kristian Tverli Iversen Master thesis in Music Pedagogy Faculty of Education, Arts and Sports Supervisor: Prof. David G Hebert 27.05.2021 I confirm that the work is self-prepared and that references/source references to all sources used in the work are provided, cf. Regulation relating to academic studies and examinations at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL), § 12-1. Abstract During the past decade, the laptop has been offered at an increasing number of Norwegian upper secondary schools. It is without a doubt the instrument with the fewest similarities to the remaining instruments, which offers fascinating challenges and opportunities. The empirical data is based on five laptop teachers who are comparatively analysed (Yin, 2018), and differences and similarities between their teaching practices form the results chapter of the thesis. The empirical data is based on one semi-structured interview (2-3 hours) per teacher and observation of one-to- one lessons in laptop, in addition to observation of a school concert and a band lesson with a laptop student. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, two interviews and one observation were conducted via Zoom. In addition, triangulation (Stake, 1995) through external opinion bearers and a YouTube-analysis was used to discuss points in the data material. Through the discussion through Bell's (2015a) five prong affordance-theory, findings portray the laptop's central affordances in performance are related to recording, programming, processing, “playback”, digital synthesis, sampling and looping. Findings express that the laptop in live performance can be used "in a hundred ways" (Øyvind), in addition to many approaches to music creation (programming, recording), also musical ideas can be achieved through multiple approaches. -
