    Protestants and Catholics and Educational Investment in Guatemala Protestants and Catholics and Educational Investment in Guatemala Rachel M. McCleary and Robert J. Barro Harvard University April 2017 Abstract Recent empirical research on the relation of religion to human capital has focused on the distinction between Mainline Protestantism and Catholicism. Our research emphasizes differential investment in education across types of Protestantism. We apply this framework to Guatemala, a country that was historically dominated by Catholicism but has moved in recent decades toward Protestantism. Our research was motivated by theological differences between Mainline Protestant denominations and premillennialist movements (Evangelical, Pentecostal) that arose at the end of the nineteenth century. These denominations placed less emphasis than Mainline Protestants on investment in education. Consistent with this perspective, literacy is enhanced more by Mainline Protestant schools then by Other Protestant schools. Catholic schools have the weakest relation with literacy, likely because the ouster of Catholic orders and schools in the liberal reforms of the 1870s had a lasting influence. 1 I. Introduction Beginning in the early nineteenth century, British and U.S. Protestant missions invested worldwide in traditional forms of human capital, namely education and healthcare. Recent empirical studies comparing Protestant with Catholic missions in Asia, the Indian subcontinent, Oceania, and Africa support this assessment (Grier [1997], Woodberry and Shah [2004], Woodberry [2009, 2012], Nunn [2014], and Bai and Kung [2012]). The purpose of this dissertation is to assess the various diplomatic agreements between the Holy See and four Islamic states (Kazakhstan, Côte d’Ivoire, Morocco, and Egypt) concluded during the pontificate of John Paul II as instruments for giving legal form to the pontiff’s magisterial teaching on religious freedom. It also determines how much of John Paul II’s teaching on religious freedom has been implemented and if the juridic status of Catholics in these states has improved with the conclusion of these agreements. This dissertation is divided into three chapters. The first chapter identifies four key elements of John Paul II’s teaching on religious liberty which shaped the Holy See’s diplomacy, shows how the pope developed from these four theological principles twelve specific benchmarks for success in promoting religious freedom, and identifies and examines the four core strategies that the Holy See has utilized to advance religious freedom, particularly in Islamic majority states.

This article is devoted to the study of the organizational structure of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (hereinafter UGCC) as the largest Eastern Catholic Church of the Byzantine rite in the world. The UGCC belongs to religious organizations (hereinafter RO), which form a separate subgroup in the general structure of non-profit organizations (hereinafter NGOs) and, accordingly, constitute the third sector of the economy along with government agencies and commercial organizations. When considering the theoretical issues, the article presents the development and evaluation of scientific thought, the theory of research and the functioning of organizational structures. The essence of organizational management structures is revealed, in particular their basic elements, interrelations, as well as the fundamentals of formation and designing. In what follows, the system of general ecclesiastical administration of the Catholic Church is presented, where the power of leadership, or administration, is divided into three categories: legislative, judicial and executive, combined as a whole in the person of the pope and at the level of the Bishop’s Particular Church. The article also reveals the place and status of the Eastern Catholic Churches in the general structure of the Catholic Church, where synodal administration is considered to be a usual form of government. Every year a few Missionaries, Dioceses and Religious Societies working in the Missions are invited to preach at our parishes and inform the parishioners about the important work being done. Mission Appeals provide an excellent opportunity to gain prayerful and financial support for their projects and provides our parishioners the opportunity to experience and participate in their baptismal call to Mission. Application Packet Requirements: All five (4) documents must be included. ● Letter of Request – On Applicant’s letterhead requesting participation in the upcoming MCP. Please include a summary of the work being done by your diocese, mission or organization. Why your diocese or organization should be considered for participation in the MCP? And who will directly benefit from receiving MCP funds. ● Authorization Letter of Inclusion – Mandatory Provides written authorization for designated United States Representative (Priest, Deacon, Sister, Brother, Lay Person) to apply, participate, represent and act on behalf of the Organization on Line #1 of the Application. Letter is to come from your Bishop, Superior or Board President and needs to have an original signature and seal. ● Application Guidelines & Requirements AND Application – Are for NEXT Year and are due by the end of the current year (Dec. 31st) and need to be completely filled out and signed. ● Copy of Page Listing – Showing your Diocese listed in the Annuario Pontificio OR Official Catholic Directory (Kenedy) Important Guidelines: ● Application is NOT a guarantee of participation in the annual Missionary Cooperative Plan.
