Proposed New ‘APPEAL’ for the support of Residential School Survivors and their Families and Communities

Dear Clergy, Religious and Lay Faithful of the Catholic Dioceses and Eparchy in Saskatchewan,

Over the past days, coming face to face with findings at cemeteries of former residential schools, we have been awakened anew to the waves of suffering from those who have been affected by these schools and the colonial system that fashioned and upheld them, a system with which dioceses and organizations, along with other institutions, were complicit.

We have heard the strong request, from Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in various quarters, to initiate a new fundraising campaign to support survivors and engage more deeply in our own ongoing commitment and response to the Truth and Reconciliation process. Many members of our Catholic community have expressed their solidarity and support for the ongoing work of healing for survivors and their families, which could take the shape of supporting local projects of the National Indian Brotherhood and responding locally to TRC Calls to Action involving a financial commitment, as guided by Indigenous communities here in Saskatchewan (cf. Calls to Action #61, #73-76; #82).

We are deeply grateful for the signs and indications of commitment we have been hearing and have begun consultations this past week towards a province-wide fundraising effort, which we would each undertake in ways discerned in our respective dioceses. To maximize the effectiveness of such an effort, it is important to plan well and to coordinate the efforts of various potential participants, and most importantly, to consult with Indigenous dialogue partners, including Survivors, Elders, Knowledge Keepers and Chiefs. Those conversations are already underway and we hope to be able to announce a plan soon.

We offer this brief communication as an update and look forward to responding with more details in the near future.

In the meantime, blessings to you all on this very warm July long weekend.

Sincerely Yours in Christ,

INFANT BAPTISM - 2021 Do you have a new baby and would like to baptize him/her or are you expecting a new baby? Perhaps you would simply like to have more information on having your child baptized at Holy Spirit parish? If any of these are true for you. I would love to hear from you! If you have attended a baptism preparation session in the past couple of years you probably won’t need to take prep before the baptism. If you are brand new parents or have not taken any baptism prep sessions please contact me and we can arrange for a prep session and then the celebration of baptism with your child. Please contact me at 306-374-1425 or email to [email protected] and I am happy to answer any questions you may have and we can talk about both the prep sessions and the celebration itself. I am looking forward to hearing from you!

CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF CHILDREN In the past couple of years we have had inquiries from parents of a number of children who have not been baptized and now the child is showing a keen interest in receiving the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion). Is this happening in your home too? We, at Holy Spirit Parish, are trying to meet this need and have created a process for children 8 to 16 years who would like to explore the possibility of being baptized and receive the sacraments of Confirmation and First Communion. I would love to talk with you and your child if she/he has been questioning. I so look forward to telling you more about this encouraging and gratifying process. Please either call or email me at [email protected] or 306-374-1425.

Keep it simple My family and I were on a walk while at my parents’ cottage on a small lake in Southwest Michigan when we got a lesson about life. Around the bend in the lake we met an old couple sitting on rickety lawn chairs fishing. Their equipment consisted of a small, cheap tackle box, a plastic margarine container full of night crawlers, a five-gallon plastic bucket to hold their catch, and two long bamboo poles that carried their lines out beyond the shallows and seaweed. “How’s the fishing?” I asked. “Fantastic,” the man said, nodding to the bucketful of fish thrashing about in the shallow water.

Across the road was a much larger lake where a fisherman was calling it quits. He was cranking his expensive bass boat onto his trailer. He wore a vest with about 27 pockets, each bulging with gear. He took six or seven fiberglass rods out of the boat and placed them in the back of his SUV, and then followed suit with two shiny multi-drawered tackle boxes and other gear.

“Ain’t no damned fish in this lake,” he snarled as he gunned the engine, pulling his still-dripping boat up the boat ramp and onto the highway.

The apostles were sent out into the world with just a single tunic and a walking stick. As fishers of people, despite their lack of fancy gear, they brought in quite a haul. –Tom McGrath, contributing author of Prepare the Word

After news of the discovery of unmarked graves at former Residential Schools, we join in prayer as a community of faith.

Creator God of love and justice, comforter of those who mourn, we turn to you acknowledging the actions of our Church and our nation. We have asked forgiveness and committed to work for healing and reconciliation. But we are painfully aware that for some, that change came too late.

We offer you our sorrow for the wrongs committed against the people of this land, our First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children in 's Indian Residential Schools. We offer you our contrition for what was allowed to happen, and for what will never be. We offer you our repentance for the injustices borne of arrogance and the harm done through indifference. We pray for comfort for the families and communities whose children, siblings, family, and friends were taken from home but did not return. We pray for consolation of hearts wounded through separation and trauma. We pray for healing of bodies, minds, and spirits wounded through abuse and oppression. We ask for clear eyes, that we may face the story of our nation and our Church with honesty. We ask for open hearts, that we may hear the stories of Indigenous Peoples with humility. We ask for courage, that we may once again ask our brothers and sisters for forgiveness. We declare our desire to be a people who pursue peace. We declare our resolve to be a people who remember. We declare our commitment to be a people of truth and reconciliation Holy One, Creator of all that is, seen and unseen, of story and of song, of heartbeat and of tears of bodies, souls, voices and all relations: you are the God of all truth and the way of all reconciliation. Come upon us, O Divine Healer, and open our eyes to the injustices brought against the Indigenous peoples of this land, their languages and cultures. May you be known for healing and wholeness, rather than being blamed for abuses that were brought about by human weakness and hostility. Make us people of integrity and bearers of hope, that we may commit to restoring relationships and to journeying together, as Non-Indigenous and Indigenous brothers and sisters, to a place of peace in you, where every tear will be wiped away, and every sorrow turned to joy. Give us one heart and one mind to walk together in the love and strength of your Spirit, in truth, reconciliation, and peace. We ask this through Jesus Christ, your Son, our brother, our Lord, and our hope. Amen.
