Remembered fondly for his e orts towards ensuring driver safety, Formula One Race Director Charlie Whiting died at age 66. Preliminary reports point at pulmonary embolism as cause of death.

Whiting had been the motorsport series’ race director since 1997. FIA President Jean Todt described Whiting as “a central and inimitable gure in Formula One who embodied the ethics and spirit of this fantastic sport.”
