  • GME Consultation Launch Final PDF 780 KB
ABERDEEN CITY COUNCIL COMMITTEE Education Operational Delivery Committee DATE 3 June 2021 EXEMPT No CONFIDENTIAL No REPORT TITLE Proposed consultation to establish catchment areas for Gaelic Medium Education REPORT NUMBER RES/21/133 DIRECTOR Steve Whyte CHIEF OFFICER Stephen Booth REPORT AUTHOR Andrew Jones / Shona Milne TERMS OF REFERENCE Remit 1.1.1; 1.1.2 1. PURPOSE OF REPORT To seek committee approval to launch a statutory consultation on proposals to establish catchment areas for Gaelic Medium Education provision at Hazlehead Academy and Gilcomstoun School. 2. RECOMMENDATIONS That the Committee :- 2.1 instructs the Chief Officer, Corporate Landlord to undertake a statutory public consultation commencing in August 2021, on proposals to establish catchment areas for the existing Gaelic Medium Education provision at Hazlehead Academy and Gilcomstoun School, as defined within the maps at Appendix 1 of this report, and 2.2 instructs the Chief Officer, Corporate Landlord to report back to the Committee on the outcomes of the consultation at its next available meeting following conclusion of the consultation process. 3. BACKGROUND 3.1 In common with other Scottish local authorities, school enrolment in Aberdeen City is based on the principle of catchment areas, commonly referred to as ‘zones’. Gaelic Medium Education (GME) provision was established by Grampian Regional Council, and at the time no catchment areas were established for this provision. 3.2 Bòrd na Gàidhlig issued statutory guidance in 2017, specifying that local authorities should create catchment areas for GME. The guidance states that a catchment area for GME provision should normally cover an area in which the local authority thinks it is reasonable for pupils wishing to receive GME to travel to school, and that this will normally overlay a number of school catchment areas.

  • People & Places Aberdeen
PEO PLE & P LACES ABER DEEN A guide to Aberdeen’s commemorative plaques Aberdeen’s Heritage Trail Leaflets Granite Trail INTRODUCTION March Stones Trail Maritime Trail North Sea Trail Plaques exist in a variety of different guises and in many different locations in and around Aberdeen City. They commemorate people and Old Aberdeen Trail places that have shaped Aberdeen; people who have made outstanding Sculpture Trail achievements in their field; and streets, buildings or events of particular historical prominence. From the nineteenth century plaques have been erected in Aberdeen often through the auspices of individuals or societies. These plaques are described as ‘non-standard’. In the 1970’s, the City Council introduced a degree of regularity, standardising most plaques erected to commemorate people as a distinctive round plaque design, whilst court plaques commemorating streets of historical importance are rectangular with a domed top edge. This leaflet draws attention to a number of plaques in the city centre and Old Aberdeen. A list appended at the end of this leaflet provides basic information on other plaques in alphabetic order. The plaque numbers on the City Centre map indicate a suggested walking trail. Most surfaces along this route are generally level. Following the suggested route will require crossing busy roads and it is the responsibility of members of the public to ensure their personal safety. We recommend the use of pedestrian crossing points where available. Most plaques are visible from public areas, but please be aware that some are located on private property. Aberdeen City Council is always pleased to accept sponsored nominations for new plaques.

  • Consultation Report Cornhill and Mile End Rezoning
Consultation Report on the proposal by Aberdeen City Council to rezone the Foresterhill Hospital Complex area from Mile End School to Cornhill School and consequently from Aberdeen Grammar School to St Machar Academy from August 2014. 1. Methodology All requirements of the Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act, 2010 were met or exceeded. 2. Involvement of Stakeholders (a) Public Events A public consultation event was held to discuss the re-zoning proposal for Mile End and Cornhill Schools. The number of attendees who signed in at the public meeting was: Number of Recorded Date Time Venue Attendees 7 parents/public plus 19 November 2013 7-8.30pm Mile End School elected members (b) Further Engagement Officers from Education, Culture and Sport also provided opportunities to meet separately with staff of both schools and representatives of the schools’ Parent Councils. (c) Comments Received The following written submissions were received: Format Number of submissions Email 4 Written 0 Comment Cards 4 Paper copies of all submissions were made available in the Members Library and have been circulated to external members of the Education, Culture and Sport Committee. Submissions, anonymised as necessary, were also made available on the council website. (d) Issues Raised There is general support for the proposal from parents living outwith the affected area but whose children attend Mile End School. Concerns were expressed by some NHS (Grampian) staff that those families spending a relatively short period of time in Foresterhill Court would be no longer able to attend the school of their choice. Historically, families arrive in Foresterhill Court and their children are enrolled in Mile End School and Aberdeen Grammar School.
