The 2012 New Generation Concert took place on 7 June at RTHK Studio One. Nine new works were given their premieres. In addition to the commissioned work, A Breath of Life by Wong Chun-wai, last year’s winner, eight works were performed by the Composers’ Guild Ensemble conducted by their Music Director Richard Tsang and Associate Music Director Lo Hau-man. This year, the commission was to write music for an ensemble of 5 music instruments: violin, viola, double bass, oboe and bassoon.

The winner of the year is Chan Kai-young. He is currently a MMus student in Composition at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His winning work, entitled Fata Morgana, paints a kaleidoscope of illusory landscapes with a palette of ‘distorted’ instrumental and harmonic colours. 2012 New Generation was broadcast in Live on 4 on 23 June. 《蜃景》和多位年青作曲家的新作,已於6月23日晚8時的「第四台音樂會」時段播出,可於香港電台網頁(www.rthk.hk)重溫。

The German-Japanese conductor Jun Märkl has made a name for himself as a leading interpreter of French impressionistic music in recordings with the Lyon National Orchestra, of which he was, until recently, Music Director. Jonathan Douglas asked him how he had come to fall under the spell of Debussy and his compatriots.

Summer is here and it is time for the Asian Youth Orchestra (AYO) to shine! Richard Pontzious, the Founder, Artistic Director and Conductor of the AYO, tells us about their upcoming events. AYO ©

he story of Carnegie Hall begins in the middle of the Atlantic. T Andrew Carnegie In the spring of 1887, on board a ship travelling from New York to London, newlyweds Andrew Carnegie (the rich industrialist) and Louise Whitfield (daughter of a well-to-do New York merchant) were on their way to the groom’s native Scotland for their honeymoon. Also on board was the 25-year-old Walter Damrosch, who had just finished his second season as conductor and musical director of the Symphony Society of New York and the Oratorio Society of New York, and was travelling to Europe for a summer of study with Hans von Bülow. Over the course of the voyage, the couple developed a friendship with Damrosch and invited him to visit them in Scotland. It was there that Damrosch discussed his vision for a new concert hall in New York City. Carnegie expressed interest in committing a portion of his enormous wealth to the project, and the idea of Carnegie Hall was born.

An Institution of Greatness

From this germ of an idea grew a legendary concert hall whose allure has drawn the world’s greatest artists to its stages, setting the standard for excellence in music for more than a century. Gustav Mahler, Leopold Stokowski, Vladimir Horowitz, Liza Minnelli, Paul Robeson, Bob Dylan — they all made their mark at Carnegie Hall. Andrew Carnegie proclaimed at the ceremonial laying of the 2003, the new Zankel Hall was opened and is known for presenting cornerstone in 1890, ‘It is built to stand for ages…’ and so it has, non-classical (world, jazz and folk music) and modern music for over 120 years, from its first 5-day inaugural music festival in performances. 1891 to today. And, now that we’re talking about the inside of the house, we can discuss some of the very famous performances that have been held there – even its first year saw significant performances by Polish pianist Ignacy Paderewski and soprano Adelina Patti; 1893 saw the first public performance of Dvořák’s New World Symphony; in 1900, violinist Fritz Kreisler appears with the New York Philharmonic; 1908 saw the US première of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2; and a decade later, Jascha Heifitz and Enrico Caruso had appeared at the Hall. Each decade saw brilliant performers and performances until 1960, when the Hall was threatened with demolition. Famously rescued at the 11th hour by a committee led by violinist Isaac Stern, the building was purchased by the State of New York and has

Throughout July and August, Radio 4 will be bringing live recordings from Carnegie Hall from international orchestras, and soloists. 7月22日起逢星期日晚8時正,星期五下午2時重播 許翔威

國際作曲家交流會議 (International Rostrum of Composers,簡稱 IRC) 是聯合國�科文組織 (UNESCO) 所支持的國際新音樂評議活動,藉此促進世界當代新作品的廣播交流。模式獨特的 IRC 從 1954年首辦至今未曾間斷,所有出席的代表聚集一起,聆聽數十首由各地電台提交的新近作品錄音。 最後,各國的代表要各自選出一些自己喜愛的作品。這不是一個比賽,但綜合評分後會公佈得分最高 許翔威 的獲選作品,以及一些名列前茅的推介作品。

細看IRC 過去獲選作品的紀錄,當中不乏聞名遐邇的大師名篇,某些早年的出爐新作,現已眾所周知,見諸音樂史冊。例如盧托斯華夫斯基所 寫的《喪曲》於1959年獲選、布烈頓的《仲夏夜之夢》和班特維斯基的《給廣島倖存者的輓歌》同於1961年獲選。武滿徹的《環礁》(Coral Island) 和 《Textures》(織體) 分別於1963年和1965年獲選,還有1969年利蓋蒂的《來自遠方》和1971年克林姆的《孩子們古時的聲音》。回顧數十年 歷史,世界變化不少,不同地域的新作品,既反映文化背景的特質,也展示了時代的潮流。

記得我首度獲參展 IRC 的作品是寫於1988年的弦樂四重奏《桑梓》,而第一次赴會是1996年,那時IRC 一直在 UNESCO 的巴黎總部大樓舉 行,我還要攜帶專業錄音機到現場把全部參展樂曲及資料記錄,回港後讓大家聆賞參考。近年資訊科技提升,各地代表已不用帶錄音器材, 行李較輕鬆了。今年初夏,IRC 在瑞典首都舉行。我一向喜歡柏格曼 (Ingmar Bergman) 的電影,於1995年也曾為瑞典雙簧管獨奏家約維恩 (Helen Jahren) 譜寫了一首協奏曲,想不到2012年因再度出席 IRC,為音樂交流略盡綿力,有緣飛到遙遠的斯德哥爾摩。

現代音樂從二十世紀起趨向調性自由化和風格多元化,相對卻沒有足夠空間讓聽眾接觸和認識,一般聽眾和演出者往往欠缺開拓新領域的勇 氣。其實人總希望找些非一般的樂曲來演繹和欣賞,那當然須有積極追尋的心,持開放態度接受新穎的聲音;只要多聽,就可分辨各有不同的 現代作品,從中找到樂趣和特別的感覺。聽眾可以抓緊第四台播放的「2012國際作曲家交流會議」的機會,聆賞那些從未在本地演出過的新 曲,透過音樂幻想一段異域遊歷,揣摩陌生語文的含意,卻不必弄個完全明白,也可在心裡打分數,評選出自己較喜歡的作品。

The 59th International Rostrum of Composers was held in Stockholm from 22 to 25 May. The 2012 Rostrum gathered representatives from 27 national radio networks across four continents presenting 50 contemporary works. This year, composer Hui Cheung-wai was invited to represent Hong Kong and take part in the rostrum.

Hui Cheung-wai will introduce the selected works from the conference and talk about his participation in the International Rostrum of Composers 2012 (in Cantonese), starting on 22 July, every Sunday at 8pm. Each programme is repeated on the following Friday at 2pm.

對於很多人來說,德布西是個印象派作 曲家,是音樂界的莫奈。他的筆下充滿 幻變的光影、層次和色彩。也有部份人 知道他是個傷透女人心的風流才子。

Acclaimed mezzo-soprano and educator Lee Bing, died on 10 June 2012 at age of 78. Born in Guilin, Guangxi, Lee came to 查海倫 Hong Kong at a young age. She began her vocal training under Prof. Hu Ran and Zhao Meibo, and furthered her studies with Ruth Packer at the Royal College of Music in London, where she graduated with high honours and was awarded the Emma Albani Prize in Singing. She then polished her lieder interpretation with Prof. Gerhard Hüsch in Münich. Lee enjoyed an eminently successful career as a concert singer. © Rajesh Jantilal 專家 Prof.CherylKeyes(右)請�。 並向中東音樂專家 Prof. A.J. Racy (左) 和黑人音樂 一個月前,筆者回母校 UCLA為節目搜集資料, 《大地之歌》就在這時空、文學與音樂 的縱橫交錯下寫成。靈機一觸,我的音 樂節目便以此為題。這也解釋了「世界 音樂」的寶貴特質:不同種族的音樂人 在各自的地域、社會、文化,和音樂美 學的薰陶下,築起西方古典音樂以外的 廣濶版圖,反映音樂的多元性。總括而 言,世界音樂泛指世界各地各族的音樂, 透過其音樂風格及創作形式,聽眾可以對 當地的文化有更深入的認識及了解。

地域、文化、音樂

在十三集「大地之歌」中,我會介紹不 同地域文化及其音樂風格之外,也會 分享過往跟不同組合或音樂人交流與 學習的經驗,包括南非的無伴奏合唱 (isicathamiya) 和樂隊組合雷村黑牛斧頭 合唱團 (Ladysmith Black Mambazo), 還會介紹不同種族怎樣以歌曲演繹愛 情、巴西跟非洲的搖籃曲有何分別、 葡萄牙民謠 (fado)跟藍調(blues)哪一 種比較憂怨,以及「tango」、「bossa nova」、「samba」等拉丁美洲音樂風 格如何應用於古典音樂上等等。

情有獨鍾‧ 多姿多彩

其實舒曼亦曾藉着改編,闡釋自己對前人作品的理解。舒曼 第一鋼琴: 是十九世紀巴赫音樂復興的其中一位推手。當年巴赫的六首 無伴奏大提琴組曲仍未受重視,而聽眾對於無伴奏樂曲又有

第二鋼琴: 所顧忌。舒曼為了推廣這些作品,就按照原曲蘊含的和聲, 加上鋼琴部份,使之成為「鋼琴伴奏大提琴組曲」。

圖中第一鋼琴部份是莫扎特的C大調奏鳴曲,第二鋼琴部份是葛利格的「加料」。 當然,並不是每位改編者都像馬勒和舒曼那樣克制,力求忠 於原著。李斯特和拉赫曼尼諾夫都曾將舒伯特的歌曲《何處 不論是鋼琴、弦樂器,還是管樂器的演奏家,都很可能接觸 往?》(Wohin?) 改編成鋼琴獨奏,兩個版本都讓鋼琴唱出抒 過同一類樂曲─改編作品,而且從中得到意想不到的樂趣。 情明朗的旋律。不過李斯特加上的裝飾帶出了歌曲原來表達 的小溪景色,拉赫曼尼諾夫卻不太老實地將旋律引進半音和 很多名曲都被作曲家本人或其他演奏家改編、移植到其他樂 聲的迷宮裡。此等明目張膽的「以意創造」,的確為改編者 器。拉赫曼尼諾夫的《聲樂練習曲》(Vocalise) 就有作曲家 和聽眾帶來很大的樂趣。挪威作曲家葛利格就試過在莫扎特 親自編寫的管弦樂版,之後被其他音樂家改編為小提琴版、 的鋼琴奏鳴曲上,多加一整個鋼琴部份,編成雙鋼琴作品。 大提琴版,甚至大號版和薩克管版,差點令人忘記它本來是 其中C大調的一首,K. 545,附加的部份富有浪漫色調,卻又 一首女高音的歌曲。提到拉赫曼尼諾夫,他所編的鋼琴炫技 跟原本的樂音一唱一和,和諧協調,聽起來令人不禁會心微 名曲《野蜂飛舞》想必人人熟悉,但你可曾在歌劇院聽過林 笑。 姆斯基─高沙可夫的原作? 各式各樣的編由都包含改編者「再創作」的心思。本月,你 很多偉大作曲家連自己作曲的時間都不夠,卻願意將寶貴的 可以在「情有獨鍾」節目領略改編音樂的妙處。 心力投放到別人的作品,加以改造。任職維也納國家歌劇院 指揮的馬勒只能在暑假偷閒作曲,但都花時間「修改」了舒 In July’s All or Nothing, Tina Ma and Phil Whelan bring you nothing but arrangements and transcriptions of famous tunes. 曼的全部四首交響曲。舒曼的原作因為某些部份的織體過於 Tune in to Radio 4 on Saturday at 5pm. 厚重而為人詬病。馬勒的解決方法不是直接除去多餘的重疊 聲部,而是利用配器和強度 (dynamics) 將重點突顯出來。今 日不少指揮家都樂於演奏這個改編版本,讓我們聽到作品在 馬勒眼中理想的一面。

Work at Radio 4 is very diverse; one is given opportunity to present programmes, to record concerts, to produce projects, and do many other tasks. Among my many different roles, I find doing interviews most enjoyable, particularly in Four for Classics’ segment ‘Hooked on Music’. In this segment, I have a chance to meet music lovers across the sectors; although they are not professional musicians, their passion for music is like a burning flame. In the past years, there were several interviews which were truly memorable. It was a Saturday afternoon, the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Greg So arrived RTHK with his guitar and a group of friends. We spent a delightful session with a lot of laughter and singing. Also, I remember that I was touched by the passion of the E-commerce manager Jess Chang, who carries her cello to office in order to practice on the back stairs whenever possible. Pianist Colleen Lee’s parents fell in love with music because of their talented daughter, and in the world of music, they also found friendship and love. Choreographer Yuri Ng listens to music and follows its rhythm while doing housework. Music enriches their lives. The new series of ‘Hooked on Music’ returns in August, and music lovers will share their music and lives with you, here on Radio 4!

有別於過往與藝術家們的訪談,這個環節讓我接觸到社會上不同層面、不同界別的音樂愛 好者;雖然他們並非專業音樂家,卻對音樂有著無比的熱誠。在過去一年的「酷愛音樂」 中,有幾個訪問令我留下深刻的印象。

記得一個星期六下午,商務及經濟發展局局長蘇錦樑拿著結他,帶了一班朋友來到港台, 一起歡唱聖詩,頓然令整間錄音室充滿著笑聲和歌聲;另外,還記得從事電子商務的鄭詩 文,會帶著心愛的大提琴回到公司,並爭取時間,在後樓梯練琴;鋼琴家李嘉齡的父母, 李子明和李黃婉華,受到女兒的感染而愛上音樂,並四出搜尋珍貴的錄音,與好友分享; 舞蹈工作者伍宇烈則會在家中播放唱片,並隨著音樂的節奏而做家務。

音樂,豐富了他們的生命,也令他們進入了一個充滿情感的天地。新一輯的「酷愛音樂」, 將在8月回歸,一班愛樂者會在大氣電波與聽眾分享音樂、分享藝術、分享人生。 48
