MARCH 2012 Minority hopefuls perform in CBS diversity showcase By Greg Braxton This article appeared in the LA Times LMFAO’s head-pounding “Party Rock Anthem” pulsated through North Hollywood’s El Portal Theatre as a multiracial group of young performers stormed the stage, promising in song to provide a lively evening of laughs. They then launched into a rapid-fire parade of sketches filled with gleeful raunch and pokes at racial stereotypes. The performance had the usual trappings of a night out at any comedy club around town. But little about this invitation only night was typical. The actors, writers and directors were all amateur, and they were mostly people of color — young blacks, Latinos, Asians, Indians — performing original material they had helped to develop All Rights Reserved. ARSC Study Guide Film Noir Television COLLECTION PROFILE Considered by some to be a movement and others a genre, the classic period of film noir stretched from 1941 to 1958, bookended by the seminal films The Maltese Falcon and Touch of Evil. Film noir (or literally “black film”), a term coined by the French film critic Nino Frank, was often used to describe films that exhibited low- key black and white cinematography reminiscent of German Expressionism and plots centered around moral ambiguity and a rampant fear of sexuality. Often described and studied strictly in terms of its filmic manifestations, many of the stylistic aesthetics and narrative techniques of noir were prevalent on American television in such programs ranging from crime dramas (“Johnny Staccato,” “The Man With a Camera,” Set in the shadows of New York's mean streets, NBC's noir series “77 Sunset Strip”), and police procedurals “Johnny Staccato” (1959-60) starred John Cassavetes as a jazz- (“Dragnet,” “Naked City,” “The Untouchables”), pianist turned private detective. Cassavetes also directed a to science fiction anthologies (“The Outer number of episodes. Limits,” “The Twilight Zone”). Many of these programs not only exhibit noir style, but showcase the artistic efforts of many film noir luminaries. John Brahm (The Lodger, Guest in the House) directed episodes of both “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” and “The Twilight Zone.” John Cassavetes (Shadows, A Woman Under the Influence) starred and directed in “Johnny Staccato.” Joseph Cotten (The Third Man, Shadow of a Doubt) -

Music in GUNSMOKE Half-Hour Seasons (Bernard Herrmann, Jerry Goldsmith, Fred Steiner Etc)
Music in GUNSMOKE Half-Hour Seasons (Bernard Herrmann, Jerry Goldsmith, Fred Steiner etc) PART I [End of Season 2 thru End of Season Five] NOTE: Unless otherwise indicated as another composer, music is by Bernard Herrmann. While I will specifically focus on Herrmann's music, I will nevertheless concentrate on the music of other composers later in the series. It was not until Season Five that original scores were commissioned for the series, starting with "Brother Whelp" (airdate November 7, 1959) by Paul Dunlap. Up to then only CBS Music Library so-called "stock music" was used. http://www.filmscorerundowns.net/other/cbs_collection.pdf As I wrote in my paper on the CBS Collection (see blue link immediately above), much of the music in the early seasons was largely a collection of mood titles or other descriptive names. The music editor(s) would then insert the music as he saw fit. Principal composers then first were Lucien Moraweck (such as CBS cue #312 "Tension on the Trail" muted horn at 21 seconds), Rene Garriguenc, Fred Steiner, Jerry Goldsmith and others, soon followed by early 1957 with Bernard Herrmann. The various suites Herrmann composed (summer 1957) such as Police Force cues, so-called Climax and Indian Suite and Western Saga (etc) did not really begin until the Fall 1957-Spring 1958 season (CBS Library VIII). This would equate in Gunsmoke with its third season. I have no information available that I could find regarding what music was used in Season One of Gunsmoke. Officially the CBS Music Library for television did not really establish itself until the 2nd season (CBS Library VII, 1967-1957 season).
