Columbo over II. period of time ~hioh sp~ns the 60's, 70's, 80's AnQ 90's, but has won II. remarkable four of his five Emmy Awards for doing so along the ~ay. Still a critical and popular favorite with a lead character and basic format just as contemporary as when the series premiered 20 years ago this year, Universal Television's "Columbo" was reoently qiven a unique two- year renewal by ABC, oalling for up to eight two-hour movie specials during the 1991/92 and 1992/93 seasons. Falk continues to star and serve as co-exeoutive producer of the olassic series. When Lt. Columbo solved his first murder case in 1967's "Presoription: Murder," Falk introduced to television audiences one of the most original and timeless oharacters the medium had ever seen, as his subsequent Best Aotor Emmy Awards in 1972, 197$, 1976 and 1990 clearly affirm. In fact, two full decades after "ColUlllbouwas launehed in series form in the fall of 1971, the oharacter remains not only a qenuine American icon but one of television's most beloved figures virtually around the world. prior to "ColUmbO," Falk also starred in television's "The Trials of O'Brien," a series overseen by eventual "Columbo" producer Richard Alan Simmons. Born in New York, Falk began his adult life as a cook in the merohant marine, and later aoquired a B.A. degree from the New School of Social Research and a masters degree in public administration from Syracuse University. This background in turn led to his securing a position as an efficiency expert for the state of Conneotiout. Quickly realizinq that his real interests lay in the creative arts, Falk turned to drama, and, with the help of famed actress/drama coach Eva L$ Galliene, began acting full time. A short time later, he won acclaim for his role in an off-Broadway produotion of "The Ioeman Cometh," impressing critics and audienoes alike and firmly establishing himself as an important new presence both on stage and in front of the camera.
