Editor: Chris Cook Assistant Editor: Ashley Wolf Design: Grant Hawkins Design, Dallas, Texas Editorial Contributions: Duke Sports Information 2 2012-13 HIGHLIGHTS • Duke had 13 teams ranked in the top 10 nationally throughout the year — men’s basketball, women’s basketball, women’s cross country, men’s fencing, women’s fencing, fi eld hockey, men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, women’s soccer, men’s tennis and women’s tennis — and 14 ranked in the top 25, including rowing. • Duke captured one individual and one team national championship in 2012-13, as men’s diver Nick McCrory claimed the NCAA title in platform diving and the men’s lacrosse team defeated Syracuse 16-10 in the national championship game. Duke has claimed at least one individual or team national crown in fi ve consecutive years and in eight of the last nine years. • Four teams captured ACC Championships with women’s basketball winning both the regular season and tournament titles. The men’s golf and women’s golf teams won their respective ACC Tournament Championships, and men’s lacrosse tied for the ACC regular season. 2012-13 BY THE NUMBERS NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships Duke has won in the last 2 four seasons Career NCAA Championships won by Duke men’s diver Nick 3 McCrory, who took fi rst place in platform diving in 2013 Consecutive years in which Duke has won either a team or 3 individual national championship. Nick McCrory (men’s diving) and the men’s lacrosse team extended that streak in 2012-13 ACC Players of the Year: Henrique Cunha (men’s tennis), 7 Brendan Fowler (men’s lacrosse — defensive), Chelsea Gray (women’s basketball), Sebastien Ibeagha (men’s soccer — defensive), Nick McCrory (men’s diving), Ali McCurdy (volleyball — defensive) and Elizabeth Williams (women’s basketball — defensive) 3 2012-13 HIGHLIGHTS • Three Blue Devils were named ACC Player of the Year — Henrique Cunha (men’s tennis), Chelsea Gray (women’s basketball) and Nick McCrory (men’s swimming & diving), while four others — Brendan Fowler (men’s lacrosse), Sebastien Ibeagha (men’s soccer), Ali McCurdy (volleyball) and Elizabeth Williams (women’s basketball) were named ACC Defensive Player of the Year. • Thirty-eight Blue Devils earned 40 All-America honors, while Duke student-athletes also received 35 all-region or all-district picks. Seventy- nine received All-ACC honors. • Twenty-three different Blue Devils participated in the NCAA Tournament as individuals. • Eight Duke student-athletes captured ACC Individual Championships, including diver Nick McCrory who won three gold medals at the league championship meet. Major athletic, academic & community service awards won 4 by Duke quarterback Sean Renfree: NFF Scholar-Athlete • Seven Blue Devils were drafted by professional organizations, including Award, Pop Warner College Football Award, ACC Jim Tatum fi rst-round NBA pick Mason Plumlee. Two other former Duke players Award and AFCA Good Works Team signed pro contracts as undrafted free agents. ACC Coach of the Year selections: Dan Brooks (women’s 5 golf), David Cutcliffe (football), Jamie Green (men’s golf), Drew Johansen (swimming & diving), Joanne P. McCallie (women’s basketball) Academic All-America selections: Juliet Bottorff (women’s 6 cross country, track & fi eld), Mollie Pathman (women’s soccer), Brinson Paolini (men’s golf), Mason Plumlee (men’s basketball), Perry Simmons (football), Laura Weinberg (women’s soccer) Consecutive top-20 Director’s Cup fi nishes for Duke, which 10 placed 12th in 2012-13 4 2012-13 HIGHLIGHTS • Several Blue Devils were honored with national service awards in 2012- 13. Sean Renfree (football) was named to the AFCA Good Works Team and also received the Pop Warner National College Football Award. Tyler Thornton (men’s basketball) was named to the Allstate NABC Good Hands Team and was also named the Sports Illustrated College Athlete of the Year. Renfree, Tara Campbell (women’s soccer) and Mason Plumlee (men’s basketball) were all fi nalists for the Senior CLASS Award. • Duke student-athletes logged approximately 2,000 hours of community service in 2012-13. • Several coaches reached milestones in 2012-13, including women’s soccer coach Robbie Church (150th win at Duke), men’s lacrosse coach John Danowski (100th win at Duke), women’s basketball coach Joanne P. McCallie (150th win at Duke), volleyball coach Jolene Nagel (500th win overall, 300th win at Duke) and men’s tennis coach Ramsey Smith (100th win overall). Duke’s baseball, men’s basketball, women’s fencing, football, men’s golf, women’s CHRIS POLLARD golf, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, rowing, men’s soccer, men’s BASEBALL swimming and diving, men’s indoor track and fi eld, men’s outdoor track and fi eld, volleyball and wrestling were among those listed by the NCAA. Chris Pollard was named head coach of the Duke baseball team • Eighteen Duke teams posted a perfect 1000 Graduation Success Rate on June 15, 2012, becoming the score: baseball, men’s basketball, men’s fencing, men’s golf, men’s 25th coach of the program. Pollard swimming and diving, men’s tennis, women’s basketball, women’s fencing, guided Duke to 26 wins in his fi rst fi eld hockey, women’s golf, women’s lacrosse, women’s soccer, women’s season, the most by any fi rst-year swimming and diving, women’s tennis, women’s cross country, women’s baseball coach in school history. GLEN LANHAM WRESTLING Glen Lanham was promoted from assistant coach to head coach of the Duke wrestling program on April 16, 2012. In his fi rst season as head coach, Lanham guided Duke to nine wins and mentored a pair of NCAA qualifi ers in Brandon Gambucci and Conner Hartmann. Gambucci earned All-ACC honors and was also the ACC runner-up at 133 pounds. The team also placed a league-high six student-athletes on
