Unfortunately, we have lately lost some 6f our best http://militaryhealth.bmj.com/ cricketers, so have not been very successful 50 far, having lost our two first matches. Captain Carroll's departure will affect us greatly. However, we have just had IL batch of recruits from the Depot, among whom we hope to find some support, and when Captain Walton returns from Exeter we hope for great things. 1 cannot conclude without expressing how very sorry we all are to lose Captain Carroll, who had endeared himself_ to all ranks while serving here."

Colonel Trewman further alluded to the fact that, with the exception of oue young soldier who had not been long enough in the Corps, no one in the detaohment was in possession of less than three decorations, one of which was that for Distinguished Conduct in the Field, won by Staff-Sergeant Fells. NOTES FROM BLOEMFONTEIN.-Major S. F. Clark, R.A.M.C., writes (May 19. 1906): "In this hemisphere the calendar is a topsy-turvy affair, and with the advent of April we have put away our cricket gear and turned our attention to winter pastimes. Considering our small numbers, the detachment has produced a very good football team, and has won four out of five matches played in the Second League of the Orange River Colony Football Association. Thaba'nchu (3 to 2), 1st Norfolk Regiment (3 to' 0), Wanderers (6 to 0), and Army Service Corps (3 to 1) were beaten in succession, but· the 5th Dragoon Guards overcame us by 2 to O. The eleven, beginning at the goal-keeper. consists of Privates Cassell, Hawthorne. Humphries, Kavn,nagh, Rose, McConnell, Colhqun, Gawthorne, Walton, Edwards, McDougal1. Three of our men were selected as representatives of this garrison at the Army Athletic Meeting, held last month at Pretoria, and they did excellently. Private Edwards won the long jump with 19 ft. 6 ins.; was second in the hurdle race, and third in the quarter mile; while Private Colhoun was second in the long jump. We hope that the detachment will carry off more than its fair share of prizes at the forthcoming sports of the Bloemfontein garrison. . . "Major Parry .. He has been succeeded by Sergeant-Major :flow." Protected by copyright. NOTES FROM CEYLON.-Captain E. C. Company, 26 runs. On the 21st we met F. If we do not comply with all these things, they send us to prison. In fact soine of us are to appear on the 14th of this month' to be sentenced, because they have not done all that the Sanitary Medical Officer had ordered them to do. Poor Maltese goat I What a war has been waged against her I How she has been humbled all over the world as a filthy and poisonous animal! " Everyone knows that the goat, being tired by the two walks she takes, as soon as she goes into the shed, she lies on the floor, and during the night, as she knows nothing of the water closet, she passes underneath her urine, &c., &c. ; and consequently lime and stinking water become pasty-like and stick to her breast and scratch her all over; and then how can one sell milk from her? What madness is it to put lime and urine undl3rneath the beasts? What kind of hygiene is this? Do you mean that by this means no more men will get sick and die in Malta? They want us to give the name of the goats I Just imagine a poor countryman. who scarcely knows his name and very often if you ask him, 'Is your name J oseph ? ' He answers: 'No, J oe.' How can http://militaryhealth.bmj.com/ such a man keep in his mind the names of all his goats 11 The only thing left to do is to compel us to baptise the goats I 11 Oh, how many things we have had to witness in our lives 11 They want us to pave with cement, so cold that it cools the breasts of the poor beasts like a piece of ice and renders the milk far worse. Cement retains dampness as much as soft stone, as is known by all those who have their houses paved with cement that even a little spittle on it will never dry; it seems that it is always spotted with humidity. If they leave us alone and will not bother us any longer, and if our friends who have to appear before the Court will not be fined, we, with great pleasure, will continue to serve the public, but to work so that the pence we earn will pay the fine at the Court shall never happen again. No more money shall be taken away from us." REGISTER FOR INDIAN SERVAN'rS. FEW officers on going to India have not experienced the difficulty of getting good servants. The discomforts on arrival and of a long journey up country, unprovided with a bearer, or, what is worse, provided with a hastily selected man, taken haphazard from the,crowd of indifferent or bad charaoters who congregate in Bombay, bave fallen, to the lot of most of us; whilst the period of trial and vexation until a proper staff of servants is secured is familiar to us all. Protected by copyright. In our Oorps, with regular annual reliefs, it should not be difficult to arrange for an interchange. Officers leaving India would then be able to provide places for the good and tried retainers they are relinquishing, and new arrivals would, by taking on these men, be spared many of the worries and troubles which now befall them. Further, good servants would not be lost to the Corps, and the prospects of continuous employ- ment could not fail to have attraction for the better class of men. ' With 'these ends in view, officers due home from India are requested to communicate to the Journal particulars of servants whom they can recommend, so that officers.' going out in relief may have an opportunity of securing these men. The particulars required are':...,.,. (1) Class of servant. (2) Whether for bachelor or married officer. (3) District or station to which he belongs. (4) Any, special recommendations. QUALIFICATIONS AND MEDICAL SCHOOLS OF OFFICERS OF THE ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS. Captain J. T. Clapham, R.A.M.C. (H.P.) writes (May 21, 1906): "In the March number of the Corps News there was a table showing qualifications and schools of the successful candidates at the recent examination for commissions in the Corps. As this is of interest I hope that it wHl be repeated on future occasions. It gave me the idea that a somewhat similar list showing the composition, as to schools, of the whole Corps might be of interest. So I have worked one out from The British Medical Directory for January last. I have included the last batch of probationers, and have excluded, as far as I could find them out, those officers who have retired :since

the beginning of the year. Of course this list does not profess to be absolutely accurate, Protected by copyright. as changes are not always notified to the Directory, but it is sufficiently so to indicate the general composition of the Corps; and may .thus be of use for comparison at past or future dates. In the first column men. are only shown under one qualification. Thus, graduates of English Universities holding, as most of them do, the M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., are only shown under tbeir universities; but in the second column some are again shown, as far as is ascertainable, under their particular schools. Where the schools are obvious, as in tbe case of Dublin or Edinburgh Universities, they are not shown again in the second column. It is not pretended tha.t no schools are omitted in the latter; but the particulars as to some were so vague that they were . left out. It will be noticed that Trinity College, Dublin, heads the list, with Edin burgh University a good second. Of the London schools, Bartholomew's and Guy's are at the top, having. sent many men in during the past three or four years. But I . think that the smaller school of St. Mary's may fairly claim to have been the most· consistent supporter of the Corps." Qualifications. The out-patient department has greatly increased during the year, as the Govern· ment Employees at H.M. Gunwharf and all Civil Subordinates and their fa.milies are now treated as out-patients, and when necessary their wives and children are admitted free to Hospital under the Regnla.tions for Civilian Subordinates issued with Army Orders dated March 1, 19040. l'he number admitted to the Hospital during the past year is above the average of previous years, which speaks well for the increasing popularity of the institution. It should be remembered that a fair proportion of these are married" off the strength," and families of reservists, who, strictly speaking, are not entitled to Medical Attendance at the Government Expense. This however, has made no difference to the Hospital Sta.ff, and all needing it have received what was required in the way of Medical Attendance. In the ca.se of those thus situated, who ha.ve needed admission to the Hospital, Government makes a charge for sustenance, which we Protected by copyright. always try to defra.y from the Private Hospital Fund, and it is here that, owing to any paucity of subscriptions, we would be obliged to withdraw our aid. 'fhere a.re also many little items of medical appliances, comforts, furniture, linen, clothing, ca.b fares for. pa.tients, &c., not allowed by Government, that are also provided out of the Fund. Our subscriptions this past year have been £74 13s., which compares unfa.vourably with receipts for previous yea.rs, but it is hoped that this falling off will be more than compensa.ted for in the coming year. 17 rrHE ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS FUND. THE TWENTY-FOURTH MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE • . The Twenty-fourth Meeting of the Committee was held at 68, Victoria Street, s.w: on Monday, June 11, 1906, at 3.30 p.m. Present. Surgeon~General A. Keogh, C.B., Director-General, A.M.S. R. Bateman. (1)' Minutes.'---The Minutes of the Twenty.third Meeting were confirmed. (2) The Committee considered and approved the FUI1-d accounts for the half-year ended May 31.1906. The accounts were audited by Surgeon-General Sir Charles Cuffe amd Colonel H. E. R. James, and are appended to these Minutes. . :(3) The Auditors drew attention to the fact that the present system of making up . the Fund accounts to dates different from those on. which the banker's accounts are made up to, leads to a great complication in keeping the accounts and intricacy in checking the same. Protected by copyright. The Auditors therefore strongly urged that the Fund accounts be made up to June 30 and December 31 in each year, so as to correspond with the banker's dates of making up accounts. The Committee agreed that in future the accounts should be made up to the dates suggested above, and that a rough abstract should be prepared early in June of each year in order that the financial position as near as possible to the date of the General Meeting should be laid before subscribers present at that Meeting. (4) The Gordon Boys' Orphanage. Dover, appealed for assistance. This Orphanage keeps boys from the age of 8 up to 16 years; a subscription of £5 entitles to a nomina tion, and a yearly sum of £16" keeps a boy at the Orphanage and gives him a trade." , The Committee asked that further information should be obtained as to the method of admitting boys to the Orphanage. . (5) The following Bums have been received for the General Relief Fund: _. Through Colonel W. W. Kenny, A.M.O., Transvaal District;

J. K., late Royal Army Medical Corps, was submitted by the Assistant Secretary, Royal Hospital, Chelsea, as the Commissioners' thought it was a case in which this Fund might be able to help him. Ml'. K., aftel' 4 3/12 years service, including 3 11/12 in South Africa, was discharged medically unfit in April, on September 29, 2021 by guest. 1905, on account of debility following enteric fever, caused in and by the Service. He was reported by the Deputy Surgeon, Royal Hospital, Chelsea, as having no organic disease, and as being likely to make a good recovery in six: months if sent to a con valescent home by the seaside. Mr. K. after discharge obtained employment which he was unable to keep owing to ill health, and has been out of work since June, 1905. He draws a temporary pension of 2s. a day. He is unma.rried. A suitable Cottage Home was found for him at a charge of 10s. 6d. pel' week for boal'd and lodging. In order to enable him to avail himself of this home the Aldershot Sub-Committee agreed J R Army Med Corps: first published as 10.1136/jramc-07-01-23 on 1 July 1906. Downloaded from

18 to oJlow £1 per month and railway expenses. Mr. K. said he could not afford to go to the Home on these terms. The Director-General then aAked the SubcCommittee to re· consider the previous decision if the way could be seen to paying tbe man's' entire expenses for three months instead of six. The Sub-Committee replied that the case had been carefully considered, and it was noted that Mr. K. was in receipt of a grant of 2s. per diem for another year. The Sub-Committee was of opinion that; the grant of £1 per month and the railway fare was sufficient to meet the case. Mr. K. regretted he was unable to accept this offer, as the payment of the extra money while away from home was more than he could afford. The Committee, in view of the fact that with the grant of £1 per month Mr; K. would be in receipt of 18s. 8d. a week, concurred with the opinion of the Aldershot Sub-Committee. (7) The Secretary of the Army Medical Officers' Benevolent Society having intimated that there would be two vacancies on that Committee in July next, the following officers, having consented to serve, were elected to fill the vacancies when they fiill due:- Surgeon-General Sir Charles Cuffe, K.C.B. Lieutenant-Colonel A. B. Cottell. (8) Major A. W. Bewley forwarded a cheque for £1 4s. 3d. collected by the' Army Chaplain, Newbridge Barracks. on behalf of Royal Army Medical Corps· charities. The Committee desired that Major Bewley and the Chaplain of Newbridge Garrison Church, should be thanked for their interest·in the Royal Army Medical Corps •. and, should be informed that the proceeds of the collection, as above, would be credited·to the Compassionate Fund (General Relief). (9) The Committee noted that the sum of thirty guineas had been paid for two "V.C." pictures (Colonel Lloyd and Captain Inkson). ANNUAL DINNER, ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS, 1906. THE Annnal Dinner of the Corps was held on Monday, June 18, at the Empire Hall, Trocadero Restaurant, the chair being taken by the Director-General, Surgeon-General A. Keogh, C.B. The demand for tickets was greater than in any previous year, and of over two hundred officers who notified their intention of dining, one hundred and eighty nine past and present members of the Corps were able to be present.
