The crackdown was directly related to illegal downloads of music and other media that the site facilitates. This is due to violations of copyright law, Paul Pinter, the national police coordinator for IP enforcement, said in a statement. Currently, The Pirate Bay and all affiliate sites have been taken offline, and one arrest of an unidentified person has been made. A copy of the homepage posted on the Costa Rica URL still floats around, but searching or viewing torrents on the mirror site is not possible. The anti-piracy group Right Alliance claimed responsibility for filing a complaint that prompted the police to take action. The group's lawyer called the site an illegal commercial service that earns large sums on other people's films and music, adding that authors are not paid for their work. By allowing users to download music without paying a dime, The Pirate Bay has become one of the biggest threats to the music industry as a whole. Remember that whole Taylor Swift/Spotify controversy? In his response to Swift removing her music from the music streaming platform, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek posted a blog post where he specifically called illegal downloading sites as a real enemy. But the tactic of blocking the site has not yet reached this side of the world, due to resistance from the public and the technology sector. Anti-piracy groups fear a backlash like the one they faced in 2012 with the Internet Piracy Act (SOPA). The anti-piracy bill sought to prevent U.S. companies such as Google and eBay from providing services for illegal downloading sites, as well as expanding criminal laws to include unauthorized streaming of copyrighted material. SOPA made it all the way to the House of Representatives, but ended up loudly denouncing opponents in Silicon Valley and elsewhere. It has been criticized as a blacklist of the Internet that promoted censorship while limiting dynamism and growth. It didn't help that the bill was written so widely that it could effecitvely put Justin Beiber behind bars for posting unauthorized cover versions of RBC songs. Instead of going down this path again, the MPAA is now exploring expanding existing laws to further their goals. Whether the Pirate Bay will be able to return this time remains to be seen. The operators of the site are silent and there is no indication that it will return anytime soon. But Torrent Freak reports that other large torrent sites are experiencing a five to ten percent spike in traffic, proving that blow-a-mole anti-piracy is far more complex than closing individual sites. This war focuses on a broader debate about whether culture should be free. Pirate Bay founder Peter Sunde has made no secret of where he gets to this debate. Screenwriters, producers, and directors were called to trial and questioned for Communist affiliations.1 These people were blacklisted from the film industry and it destroyed many of their careers. Blacklisting is an example of censorship around the media, the fear of communism in the United States, and an attempt to stand up for basic civil rights. The Hollywood Blacklists were heavily influenced by the “red scare”, and had negative lasting effects on the American motion-picture industry. When World War II ended in 1945 the violent war between the countries was over, but another kind of war began. The two major world powers, America and Russia, were in constant competition with one another for wealth, political power, technological advancements, and dominance among the nations. Legislative Framework January 11, 2019 Appendix 6 Rights Ownership of the Top 100 TV Programs in Canada (English Channels) According to AMA 2017-2018 Broadcast Year to Date (Aug. 28 - Nov. 19, 2017) This is an analysis of who owns the rights to the Top 100 TV programs that have aired on English- language television channels in Canada according to Average Minute Audience (AMA)1 in the 2017- 2018 broadcast year to date (between August 28, 2017 and November 19, 2017). The list of the Top 100 programs can be found in the table on the pages that follow. It should be noted that duplicate listings (airings) of the same program title (series) have been removed from the list, with the exception of news programs and sporting events.     Using Data Science to Understand the Film Industry's Gender Gap Dima Kagan∗1, Thomas Chesneyy2, and Michael Firez1 1Department of Software and Information Systems Engineering, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev 2Nottingham University Business School August 7, 2019 Abstract Data science can offer answers to a wide range of social science ques- tions. Here we turn attention to the portrayal of women in movies, an industry that has a significant influence on society, impacting such aspects of life as self-esteem and career choice. To this end, we fused data from the online movie database IMDb with a dataset of movie dialogue subti- tles to create the largest available corpus of movie social networks (15,540 networks). Analyzing this data, we investigated gender bias in on-screen female characters over the past century. We find a trend of improvement in all aspects of women`s roles in movies, including a constant rise in the centrality of female characters. There has also been an increase in the number of movies that pass the well-known Bechdel test, a popular|albeit flawed|measure of women in fiction. Here we propose a new and better alternative to this test for evaluating female roles in movies.
